  • Small area estimation has received significant intention in recent years due to a growing demand for reliable local area statistics. Traditional area-specific direct estimates based solely on sample survey data in the areas of interest do not provide adequate small area precision; however, design-based indirect local area estimators borrow strength from sample observations of related areas to increase the effective sample size. Design-based indirect estimation methods such as synthetic and composite estimators are considered to adjust local area unemployment rate estimates in the Korean Economically Active Population Survey. This study suggests an efficient alternative to minimize the cost to construct the unemployment rate of a local area through simulation under the condition that we can maintain a certain level of CV for the estimates. We obtained the results that the composite estimators using a sample size greater than 10 are more stable and significant at the level of CV 25% in our design scheme.

  • In this study we compared three models for small area estimation, Fay-Herriot, Hierarchical Bayses model and spatio-temporal model about charter, monthly rent price index. Charter, monthly rent price of Korea are important issue in these days. Because housing type rapidly changes from self to charter and monthly rent. The accuracy of the estimation was checked on four scales, that is ARB, ASRB, AAB, ASD. In this result, the spatio-temporal model among applied models has most optimal scales about small area estimation of charter and monthly rent index.

  • In this paper, we consider the HB estimators of small area means with repeated survey. mao and Yu(1994) considered small area model with repeated survey data and proposed empirical best linear unbiased estimators. We propose a hierachical Bayes version of Rao and Yu by assigning prior distributions for unknown hyperparameters. We illustrate our HB estimator using very popular data in small area problem and then compare the results with the estimator of Census Bureau and other estimators previously proposed.

  • A number of case studies that find distribution of longevity population and influencing factors through the spatial data fusion using GIS techniques are growing. The majority cases of these studies are adopt census administrative boundary data for the spatial analysis. However, these methods cannot fully explain the phenomenon of longevity because there are a variety of spatial characteristics within the census administrative boundaries. Therefore, studies of spatial unit are required that realistically reflect the phenomenon of human longevity. The dasymetric mapping method enables to product of spatial unit more realistic than census administrative boundary map and statistic estimates of small area utilizing diversity spatial information. In this study, elderly population of small area has been estimated within statistically significant level that applied the vector based dasymetric mapping method. Also, the cluster analysis confirmed that the variation of local spatial relationship within census administrative boundary. The result of this study implied that the need for local-level studies of the human longevity and the validity of the dashmetric mapping techniques.

  • Recently many small area estimation methods using the lattice data analysis have been studied and known that they have good performances. In the case of using the lattice data which is mainly used for small area estimation, the choice of better neighborhood information system is very important for the efficiency of the data analysis. Recently Lee and Shin (2008) compared and analyzed some neighborhood information systems based on GIS methods. In this paper, we evaluate the effect of various neighborhood information systems which were suggested by Lee and Shin (2008). For comparison of the estimators, MSE, Coverage, Calibration, Regression methods are used. The number of unemployment in Economic Active Population Survey(2001) is used for the comparison.

  • Most of existing studies about the small area estimation deal with the estimation of parameters based on cross-sectional data. However, since many official statistics are repeatedly collected at a regular interval of time, for instance, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, we need an alternative model which can handle characteristics of these kinds of data. In this paper, we investigate the generalized estimating equation which can model time-dependency among response variables and is useful to analyze repeated measurement or longitudinal data. We compare with the generalized linear model and the generalized estimating equation through the estimation of unemployment rates of 25 areas in Gyeongsangnam-do and Ulsan. The data consist of the status of employment and some covariates from January to December 2005.

  • In this study, we suggest the method of small area estimation based on the Economically Active Population Survey (EAPS) data in producing unemployment statistics for the local self-government areas (LSGAs) within large areas. The small area estimators considered are design-based indirect estimators such as the synthetic and composite estimators. The jackknife mean square error was used as a measure of accuracy of such small area estimators. The total unemployed and jackknife mean square errors of the 10 LSGAs within the large area of ChoongBuk region are derived from the estimation procedure suggested in this study, using EAPS data of December 2000. The reliability of small area estimators was assessed using the relative bias values and relative root mean square errors of these estimators. We find that under the current Korean EAPS system, the composite estimator turns out to be much more stable than other estimators.
