  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of juvenile books on Korea and Japan in WorldCat and observe the possibility of diffusing knowledge on each country. The distribution of bibliographic records of books published from 1993 through 2012, and especially the books published in 1997, when the numbers of books on both countries were the closest, were analyzed in detail in terms of language, genre, subject headings, and holding libraries. The result shows much fewer bibliographic records of juvenile books on Korea than those of books on Japan, and their growing gap every year. There were also much fewer holding libraries and copies of books on Korea, published in 1997, compared to books on Japan. The texts were mostly written in Korean and in tones set for very young readers. A serious lack of diversity in subjects and genres with the focus on Korean folklores and anecdotal biographies were also observed. Therefore, there seems to be nothing much interesting to read that would help promote the diffusion of knowledge on Korea through libraries around the world.

  • Books in libraries can be highly refined information. Google invests digitization of books in libraries. But the digitization of books that has a variety of interests, coupled with several problems, including class action, in addition the many critical discussions are underway. Korea pushed the national digitization projects, what are libraries' digitizing their collection of many books. Of course, in publishing and digitization of the target is limited to books published ahead of Google. However, the Library Act was amended for the reposition of online materials, but only in the ways that Google's case is different. Library Act permits collection of online resources through the library to allow, the legislation can be considered as leading act. However, online data is publicly not available through the Internet, so this service hae limited means and range unlike Google. This paper, the digitization of books in the library due to copyright, examines the legal issues looking for the desirable solution. Physical library's main role had been kept the book, but we use the book in terms of policies needed to consider. To overcome these limitations of Copyright Act, this paper researches the relation of Google Book Search in our Copyright Act, and considers introduction as the fair use doctrine and the digital repository system.

  • This study is to analyze the types and management of old maps collected by library and museum in Korea. About 1,200 items of old maps are collected in 39 institutes. This distribution is due to the scatter during late Joseon period through Japanese imperialism period. Half and half of old maps are reserved in museum and library. Atlas of county maps are reserved mainly in Gyujanggak, the National Library of Korea and Library of Korea University There are 10 copies of $\lceil$cheonggu-do(靑邱圖)$\rfloor$ and 25 copies of $\lceil$Daedongyeo-jido(大東輿地圖)$\rfloor$ put in together in all instutes. Forms of those maps in terms of size, picture and place names recorded are different between each other. Methods of management of those maps are different between library and museum. Old maps are treated as rare old books in library, but as traditional old picture in museum. Methods and levels of opening to public of maps are also different in each institute. More serious thing is that there is no specialist in old maps in most institutes.

Although genealogy related materials have high pragmatic value, the reality is that the acquiring methods are limited to collect the genealogical table or is not systematic. Even the genealogical materials held in the library are not rationally organized. Under such circumstances, this study investigates the cases of the management of genealogical materials both in domestic and foreign institutions, and also examines the real situations of material organization such as the collection, the classification and the cataloging on the centering of the libraries which hold a large amount of genealogical materials. On the basis of this investigation, the study aims to measure the enhancement of the methods for collecting and organizing genealogical materials which enable the collection management and information retrieval fur them to be efficient and effective.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest the usability of collection evaluation methods for collection development policy in public libraries. To achieve this purpose, this study applied Bonn's Use Factor, Turnover Rate of Collection, and Trueswell's 80/20 Rule to actual circulation data of the Gwangjin District Public Library in Seoul during last ten years. This study added practical meanings and values in collection evaluation through the analysis of total holdings and subject classes. Main items of analysis are the rate of use to total holdings and to holdings in specific subject classes by year, and the rate of core collection circulation by year. The results show relations between the rate of use and library's performance through the analysis of the rate of use both total holdings and subject classes. The results also figure out user's patterns and library appraisal of community users through the analysis of circulation data. In addition, the analysis of core collection gives a good basis for an effective collection development policy.

  • This study investigates and classifies 61 pieces of hereditary Sasojeol versions in possession of 8 libraries in Korea and 3 libraries in the US and Japan and compares them with one another with the following results. Firstly, as a result of investigation of 61 pieces of Sasojeol, it was found out that the hereditary versions are classified into 5 kinds including Cheongjangkwan Sasojeol, Sashojyeol of Korean version, Hyunto Sasojeol and Sasojeoljijeol. The detailed investigation proves that Sasojeol and Sasojeonjijeol are imparted to the present most often, that Sashojyeol of Korean version is the traslated from printed version of Sasojeol, that Hyunto Sasojeol is the Korean editings of printed version of Sasojeonl, and the Sasojeoljijeol is the ummarized version of Cheongjangkwan Sasojeol. Secondly, the comparison of Cheongjangkwan Sasojeol possessed by major libraries proves that the version in National Library of Korea's and Jangseogak's possession are similar to each other by and large and that the comparison of Sasojeol possessed by each institution proves that the version in Kyonggi University's possession copied the former generally fine. Thirdly, the comparison of Sasojeoljijeol and Cheongjangkwan Sasojeol proves that Sasojeonjijeol is the summarized version of redrafted Cheongjangkwan Sasojeol and traces of 22 sentences being added to.
