Omni-directional shear-horizontal magnetostrictive patch transducers have a disadvantage that magnetic flux leakage into the plate when it is installed on a ferromagnetic plate. The leakage produces poor transduction efficiency and unwanted wave mode excitation which should be avoided in guided wave inspections of large plate-like structures. In order to resolve these problems, we newly developed a method to reduce the leakage into the plate. In the method, the patch and the magnet are vertically lifted off and their optimal positions are determined by numerical simulations. Also, the verification of the developed method is successfully verified by experiments.
This work investigated the electromechanical performance of a cantilevered vibration energy harvester incorporating the single crystal PMN-PZT, manufactured with the most recent technology of solid-state single crystal growth. Single crystal PMN-PZTs with two different crystallographic axes such as [011] and [001] were considered. For the [011] orientation, because material properties such as the stiffness, piezoelectric strain coefficients are not the same in the directions normal to the crystallographic axis, the effects of the transversely anisotropy on the magnitude and frequency bandwidth of output power were also analyzed.
Dynamic stability of an axially accelerating beam structure is investigated in this paper. The equations of motion of a fixed-free beam are derived using the hybrid deformation variable method and the assumed mode method. Unstable regions due to periodical acceleration are obtained by using the Floquet's theory. Stability diagrams are presented to illustrate the influence of the dimensionless acceleration, amplitude, and frequency. Also, buckling occurs when the acceleration exceeds a certain value. It is found that relatively large unstable regions exist around the first bending natural frequency, twice the first bending natural frequency, and twice the second bending natural frequency. The validity of the stability diagram is confirmed by direct numerical integration of the equations of motion.
To improve the riding comfort and to increase the speed of high-speed railway, it needs active suspension system for railway more and more. In Korea, Korean Train Express (KTX) was opened to commercial traffic 2years ago. Korea High-speed Railway (HSR 350x) is being developed and succeeded 350km/h test run. With the increase of the speed, the vibration control of the high-speed railway becomes important to meet high ride quality. In this paper, we suggest the install of lateral damper to HSR 350x. The result shows better ride quality.
Shock-type vibrations are usually experienced in vehicles excited by impulsive forces. Fifteen subjects used magnitude estimation to judge the discomfort of vertical shock-type vibration generated on a rigid seat. The shocks had different frequencies and magnitudes and were produced from the response of a 1 degree-of-freedom model to a half-sine force input. The magnitudes of the shocks, expressed in terms of both peak-to-peak value and un-weighted vibration dose values, VDVs, were correlated with magnitude estimates of the discomfort. In this study, equivalent comfort contour of shock-type vibration were obtained. From the contour, it was investigated that shock-type vibration at frequency below 0.8 Hz and between 4.0 Hz and 10.0 Hz is highly sensitive to the discomfort than at other frequencies.
The coupled time-integration method with a staggered algorithm based on computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been developed in order to demonstrate physical vibration phenomena due to dynamic aeroelastic excitations. Virtual flutter tests for the spanwise curved ing model have been effectively conducted using the present advanced computational method with high speed parallel processing technique. In addition, the present system can simultaneously give a recorded data file to generate virtual animation for the flutter safety test. The results for virtual flutter test are compared with the experimental data of wind tunnel test. It is shown from the results that the effect of spanwise curvature have a tendency to decrease the flutter dynamic pressure for the same flight condition.

The axial bearing using two ring type permanent magnets to support the weight of a flywheel is proposed to reduce the bearing loss in a flywheel energy storage , system. Two permanent magnet makes stable force in axial direction but unstable force in lateral direction. The lateral unstable stiffness is identified quantitatively using flux analysis, and then through the rotor dynamic analysis on a rigid flywheel system the unstable effects on the system by the stiffness is investigated.
The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the characteristics of rotational, radial, and axial vibration for helical gears with different contact ratios. For this purpose, the gear box is specially designed and manufactured. Two helical gears with different face widths and reduction ratios are investigated. The gear vibration in each direction is measured by accelerometers attached to the gear body. Rotational vibration is the highest and radial vibration is the lowest in the gear frequencies. While the increase of rotational speed increases gear vibration, it does not always increase with torque. It is not also linearly related to the contact ratio. In addition, axial vibration is not proportional to rotational vibration.
Structural intensity has been mainly utilized to identify vibration energy flow in a vessel. In this paper, the structural intensity of a shuttle tanker subjected to H-moment of the main engine was calculated using a finite element model. From the analysis, it was found that the top-bracing elements, which support the main engine onto the hull structure to prevent the excessive transverse vibration of the main engine, play the role of the dominant path and sink for vibration energy flow from the main engine. Therefore, the structural intensity was controlled by the modification of stiffness and damping characteristics of the top-bracing elements. As a result, it is observed that the transverse vibration level at the center of navigation bridge deck decreased after the control of structural intensity.
