This study was conducted to investigate the seismic behavior of steel member resisting frames considering the relative stiffness of the connection and beams. Six-story steel moment frames were designed to study the seismic behavior. The connections were classified into Double Web-Angle connections (DWAs), Top- and Seat-angles with double Web-angles (TWSs), FEMA-Test Summary No. 28, Specimen ID: UCSD-6 (SAC), and Fully Restrained (FR). The rotational stiffness of the semi-rigid connections was estimated using the Three-Parameter Power Model adopted by Chen and Kishi. The relative stiffness, which is the ratio of the rotational stiffness of the connections to the stiffness of the beams, was used. Push-over, repeated loading, and time history analysis were performed for all the frames. The seismic behavior of each frame was analyzed with the story drift, plastic hinge rotation, and hysteretic energy distribution.

In this paper, a FEM analysis model was developed to solve the consolidation phenomena of embankment on the soft foundation. The developed FEM model was based on the Biot's consolidation equation which was coupled with one of three stress-strain constitutive relationships. In order to check the validity of the newly developed FEM model, the program input data were used by a test embankment which had been already constructed at Cubzac-les-ponts in France by Magnan et al. The FEM results compared to the experimental and analytical results which were obtained by the Magnan's group at Cubzac-les-ponts. The results compared showed that the consolidation phenomena were well explained by the author's FEM model which results were more accurate than the others. As for the pore water pressure, Christian-Boehmer's method used in this paper was considered preferable to Sandhu-Wilson's used by Magnan.
A scaled model test was performed to evaluate the stability of subway twin tunnels excavated in the sedimentary rocks with subhorizontal bedding planes. The size of studied tunnel was 6.2 m×6.8 m and pillar width was 4 m. The anisotropic model test specimen was manufactured with the modeling materials suitable for in-situ rocks by way of dimensional analysis. Fracture and deformation behaviors of tunnels according to applied loads were investigated through the biaxial compression test. As the load was increased on the model specimen, the first crack occurred in the middle part of the pillar across twin tunnels and the gradual fractures progressed at crown and floor of twin tunnels. All the cracks in pillar were generated along the existing bedding planes so that they were found to be the main cause of the pillar failure. In addition, the test results were verified by numerical analysis on the experimental conditions using FLAC ubiquitous joint model. The distribution of plastic regions obtained from numerical analysis were in general agreement with test results, confirming the reliability of the scaled model test conducted in this study.
Most of ferrous b.c.c weld materials may experience martensitic transformation during rapid cooling after welding. And it is well known that volume expansion due to phase transformation could influence in the case of welding of high tensile strength steels on the relaxation of welding residual stress. To apply this effect practically, it is a prerequisite to establish a numerical model which is able to estimate the effect of phase transformation on residual stress relaxation quantitatively. In this study, we investigated the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress through experiment. And three-dimensional thermal elastic-plastic FEM analysis is conducted to reproduce the effect of phase transformation on the relaxation of welding residual stress. Also we carried out the analysis of welding residual stress in welds of similar or dissimilar steels considering the effect of residual stress relaxation due to phase transformation.
Background: Neuromodulation therapy has been used to an adjunctive treatment promoting motor recovery in stroke patients. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on neurobehavioral recovery and evoked potentials in rats with middle cerebral artery occlusion. Methods: Seventy Sprague-Daley rats were induced permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) stroke model and successful stroke rats (n=56) assigned to the rTMS (n=28) and sham (n=28) group. The 10 Hz, high frequency rTMS gave on ipsilesional forepaw motor cortex during 2 weeks in rTMS group. The somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP) and motor evoked potential (MEP) were used to evaluate the electrophysiological changes. Behavioral function of the stroke rat was evaluated by the Rota rod and Garcia test. Results: Forty rats ($N_{rTMS}=20;\;N_{sham}=20$) completed all experimental course. The rTMS group showed better performance than sham group in Rota rod test and Garcia test at day 11 (p<0.05) but not day 18 (p>0.05). The amplitude of MEP and SSEP in rTMS group was larger than sham group at day 18 (p<0.05). Conclusions: These data confirm that the high frequency rTMS on ipsilesional cerebral motor cortex can help the early recovery of motor performance in permanent middle cerebral artery stroke model and it may simultaneously associate with changes in neurophysiological activity in brain.

Eight RC bridge plers have been made on a 1/3.4 scale model and have been tested in a quasi-static cyclic load so as to investigate their seismic performance. The ultimate objective of this experimental study is to investigate the hysteretic behavior of reinforced concrete plers, which have been widely used for urban transportation facilities in Korea. Improtant test parameters are hoop ratio, axial load, load pattern, and etc. And noninear behaviors of test columns have been evaluated through their yield and ultimate strength, energy dissipation, ductility and load-deflection characteristics under quasi-static cyclic loads. From the quasi-static tests on 8 bridge piers, it is concluded that energy dissipation, ultimate strength and curvature for a given displacement factor ${\mu}={\Delta}/{\Delta}_y$ are higher for the seismically designed columns than for the nonseismically designed columns.

Plate bending process is indispensible in shipbuilding. The process includes press bending process and heating process. Especially the heating process is carried out exclusively by skillful workers. Many researches have been made to automate the heating process. This study was carried out as a fundamental study to develop a efficient analysis method for triangle heating and focused on clarifying the deformation characteristics of plate by triangle heating and essential elements effect on the deformation. In this paper, we proposed an analysis model for thermal-elastic-plastic analysis and simulated the deformation by triangle heating using ANSYS based on the experimental results of Jang et al.(2001). Also, we showed the deformation characteristics more clearly by comparing the deformation due to triangle heating and line heating in case that the total heat input is same. Finally, we investigated the change characteristics of deformation elements according to the volumetric heat input.

The root joint in the welding structures are apt to failure by the stress concentration which is occurred by the external force. Therefore, in the safety and reliability of structure, the complete penetration joint welding which are obtained by the groove welding with edge preparation is generally required. Nevertheless, fillet T-joint welding without edge preparation is often carried out in the fields to reduce working time and consumption of welding electrode, however, this process is likely to produce inadequate joint penetration such as root gap. In this paper, the focus of research is to investigate distribution of welding residual stresses in the plate(or flange) and web of T-joint weld, and especially in the near of root gap notch that is due to incomplete joint penetration. For the analysis, we have chosen model of T-joint weld in the cases of single and multi-pass welding with submerged arc welding and analyzed model by using finite element programs considering the heat conduction and thermal elasto-plastic theory.

The basic concept of seismic design is to attain the ductility required in a design earthquake. This ductility can be obtained by providing sufficient lateral confinements to the plastic hinge regions of columns. The most cost-effective design might be derived by determining the proper amount of lateral confinement using a stress-strain relationship for confined concrete. Korean bridge design code requires the same amount of lateral confinement regardless of target ductility, but Japanese design code provides the stress-strain relationship of the confined concrete to determine the amount of lateral confinement accordingly. While design based on material characteristics tends to make the design process more involved, it makes it possible to achieve cost-effectiveness, which is also compatible with the concept of performance-based design. In this study, specimens with different numbers of lateral confinements have been tested to investigate the characteristics of the stress-strain relationship. Test results were evaluated, using several empirical equations to quantify the effects.

Fatigue tests using a single-peak loading and a two-step loading were carried out to examine the fatigue crack growth behaviar and to find the appropriate analysis method. C-T specimens were made using structural steel SWS58 for the tests. From this, just after a single-peak loading acceleration effect was occured and after some times retardation effect was found. And eminent retardation effect was found after High-Low two-step loading. The transition effect of crack growth due to this variable loading was occured owing to the residual stress and the plastic zone size at the crack tip. And the behaviors of these are well explained by Elber's Crack Closure Model. Also I could find that the Wheeler's Retardation Model is a simple and appropriate theory among analysis methods of fatigue crack growth under the variable loading.
