ITS DNA sequences of two variants of Pinus spp. having single fasciculate leaf or two to three fasciculate leaves within an individual were analysed in order to determine their origin. Also, the same DNA locus of P. densiflora, P. rigida and P. koraiensis, distributed at the same region together with the OTUs having leaf variations, were analysed to compare with each other. Aligned sequences including ITS1, 5.8S and ITS2 were 580~584 bp in length. The 5.8S region was well conserved among all the OTUs we tested except for P. koraiensis, which has two nucleotide substitutions. The partial ITS1 region upstream of the 5.8S region showed relatively high sequence diversity compare to the ITS2 and has 181~185 bp in length. In this region, the sequences of the two variants were identical to that of P. densiflora. The ITS2 has identical for all OTUs in length and the two variants also have same sequences compare to that of P. densiflora. These two variants and samples of P. densiflora were grouped together in the UPGMA tree with 100% similarity level. The result strongly suggest that these two variants were originated from P. densiflora.
The effects of Mn on growth and nutrient status of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown in a nutrient culture solution were investigated. Mn concentrations was added as manganese chloride at 0, 30 and 60ppm to the nutrient culture solution. The 2-year-old seedlings were transplanted into the solution maintained at pH 4.0, and grown for 90 days in a greenhouse. The Mn treatment induced a significant reduction in the dry weight growth of the seedlings. The relative growth rate(RGR) and net assimilation rate(NAR) of the seedlings decreased with increasing Mn concentrations in the nutrient culture solutions. For the nutrient status of the seedlings, Ca and Mg content in trunk and root was least in 60ppm Mn treatment, and Mn content in needle was about 3 times more than in root. Also the net photosynthetic rate of the seedlings was significantly lower both in 30ppm and 60ppm Mn treatment compared to them in 0ppm. This result suggests that the reductions in the RGR and NAR of the seedlings may be resulted from the inhibition of net photosynthesis by the mixed effect of lower nutrient uptake of roots and excess accumulation of Mn in needle.
The essential oils were extracted from the needles of several softwood tree species, Pinus densiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Chamaecyparis pisifera to investigate their biological activities. The antifungal activity by hyphal growth inhibition method was determined by three wood rot fungi, one mouldous fungi, and three tree pathogenic fungi and the antibacterial activity by paper disc method and turbidiometric method by three gram positive bacteria and one gram negative bacteria, Escherichia coli, were also tested. Antifungal activity was the best in the essential oil from C. obtusa, and the following was resulted in order of P. densiflora and P. koraiensis. The essential oil from P. densiflora showed higher antifungal activity against wood rot fungi than that from P. koraiensis while the result was contrary against tree pathogenic fungi. However, the antibacterial activity was the best in the essential oil from P. densiflora, and the following was in order of C. obtusa and P. koraiensis. From these results, the variation of biological activity seemed to be due to the chemical composition of essential oils.
Methanol extracts of nine native plants(Teraxacum platycerpum leaf, Pinus densiflora leaf, Artemisia prinseps, leaf, Allium tuberosum leaf, Cassia obtussifolia, whole plant, Sophora angestifolia root, Stemonae sessilifolia root, Lonicera japonica, stem, leaf, flower, and Clivia miniata leaf were tested for repellent activity against Aedes albopictus and Blateria germanica. The extracts of P. densiflora, T. platycerpum, A. tuberosum and L. japonica (flower) exhibited excellent repellent activity against A. albopictus, while only L. japonica (leaf) had some good activity against B. germanica.

This study was carried out to investigate the antifungal activity of the water soluble essential oil against Trichoderma spp. Water soluble essential oils from Pinus densiflora and Chamaecyparis obtusa were obtained from GAP (Gas assisted process) extraction apparatus. When the water soluble essential oil was treated, the growth of the conidial germination was maximum under the cultivation condition at $25^{\circ}C$ and in the culture medium adjusted to pH 5.0. The yield of water soluble essential oil was 3.9% and 3.7% in P. densiflora and C. obtusa, respectively. 24 and 15 kinds of compounds were identified in water soluble essential oils of P. densiflora and C. obtusa, respectively. The major components in the essential oil of P. densiflora were $\alpha$-Terpineol acetate and Terpinen-4-ol and those of C. obtusa were Terpinen-4-ol and $\alpha$-Terpineol. Antifungal activity was the best in the 5000 ppm of P. densiflora against Trichoderma harzianum and in 5000 ppm of C. obtusa against Trichoderma atroviride.
This study was carried out to provide basic information on physiological changes of 4-year-old seedlings of Pinus thunbergii inoculated with pine wood nematodes by analyzing changes of symptom development, stem and needle water content and nematode populations in stem. Twenty days after inoculation, needles were discolored as an external symptom, and xylem drying and pith browning occurred at the above and below of the inoculation sites as an internal symptom. However, xylem drying began to occur 10 days after inoculation, which was determined by the difference in drying status of xylem and cortex between control and inoculated seedlings. Although population of pine wood nematode increased from 5 to 10 days after inoculation, it has increased dramatically from 10 to 20 days after inoculation when both internal and external symptoms appeared. As the time passed by after inoculation with pine wood nematodes, water content of stem and relative water content in current needles and branch gradually decreased. As the number of nematodes increases, water content of stem and relative water content of current needles and branches decreased significantly. There was a positive relationship between the number of nematodes and xylem drying and/or disease development, but the number of nematodes rapidly decreased as seedlings become severely diseased.

The composition, source, and regional concentration of polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs) were measured in pine needles with several sites in Korea. Homologs specific analysis confirmed that hepta-BDE(bromodiphenyl ethers) through deca-BDE were predictive indicator for total PBDEs concentration(Pearson's correlation coefficient r>0.96, p<0.001). Deca-BDE were detected in relatively very high concentration compared to other PBDE congeners in all samples. The similarity of between congeners profile to those of Bromkal 70-5DE and DE-71, the commercial mixture of PBDEs, indicates these mixtures are source of PBDEs observed in these sites. Also, BDE-47, -99, -100, -206, -207, and -209 were the dominant congeners in all samples, suggesting that the widely used commercial penta- and deca-BDE technical mixture were the original sources. However, Pearson's correlation coefficients of between BDE-209 and BDE-47, -99, -100 were insignificant, which implied that tetra-BDE and penta-BDE may originate from secondary sources such as air-plant partition in manner similar to that of the PCBs, while deca-BDE formulation still has primary sources.
A natural mixed forest of Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis in Mt. Mohu area was studied to investigate patterns of species competition and productivity. Ten $10m{\times}10m$ plots were set up and eight sample trees of each Pinus densiflora and Quercus variabilis were harvested for dimension analysis. Mean tree age of Pinus densiflora was 33 years and that of Quercus variabilis was 26 years. DBH and height of Quercus variabilis were larger than those of Pinus densiflora untill tree age 15. After tree age 15, height of Quercus variabilis was higher than height of Pines densiflora while DBH of Quercus variabilis was smaller than DBH of Pines densiflora. For a tree of a given DBH, there was little difference in leaf dry weight between Pines densiflora and Quercus variabilis. For a tree of a given DBH, dry weights of stem wood, stem bark and branches of Quercus variabilis weighed more than those of Pinus densiflora, and the differences between the dry weights of the two species became greater as DBH increased. Net assimilation ratio of Quercus variabilis was higher than that of Pinus densiflora, and biomass accumulation ratio of Quercus variabilis was lower than that of Pinus densiflora. It may be given as a conclusion that Quercus variabilis was superior to Pinus densiflora in species competition owing to faster height growth, higher net assimilation ratio, and lower biomass accumulation ratio. Aboveground stand biomass was 87.7t/ha and aboveground stand net production was 8.3t/ha/yr.
According to Yoshihisa Kuroki's report that the total amount of carotenoid was more in the susceptible to pine bark beetle, than in the resistant ones, carotenoids were extracted from needle leaves of one year old seedlings of Pinus thunbergii, Pinus desiflora, Pinus rigida, Pinus koraiensis, Pinus rigitaeda and Pinus taeda which are all important pines in Korea, to find their resistant ratio to the insect. The carotenoids were analyzed and compared using the spectra of them by spectrophotometer. The results were as follows: 1. The visible absorption spectra of carotenoids in those pine trees were proved to be very similar. 2. The total amount of carotenoids in needles differed with the tree species and the contents were arranged in decreasing order P. koraiensis>P. rigida>P. thunbergii>P. rigitaeda>P. taeda, it seemed that there was corelation between the cartenoid content and the extent of harm caused by the pine bark beetles except P. koraiensis. 3. But carotenoids were contained in Robinia pseudoacacia, Castanea crenata, Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cedrus deodra leaves too. 4. The total amounts of carotenoids in these pines of 9 species were arranged in decreasing order Robinia pseudoacacia>Pinus koraiensis>Pinus rigida>Pinus thunbergii>Castanea crenata>Pinus rigitaeda>Pinus taeda>Chamaecyparis obtusa>Cedrus deodara. Therefore, it was proved that there was no correlation between carotenoid cotent and extent of resistance to the insect. 5. In the thin-layer chromatography of these carotenoids, 13 kinds of components in P. densiftora, P. koraiensis and P. rigida and 12 kinds of spots in other pines, were detected respectively, under ultra-violet fluorescent lamp $3,600{\AA}$ and $2,537{\AA}$. 6. The eighth spots from the bottom in P. densiflora, P. koraiensis and P. rigida were not found in other pines and other 4 species (Robinia pseudoacacia, Castanea crenata, Chamacyparis obtusa, Cedrus deodra). Especially the spot in P. densiflora fluoresced strong cobalt blue-fluorescence under ultra-violet fluorescent lamp $2,537{\AA}$.
