  • This study is theoretically examined the influences on the performance of diesel engine super¬charged by exhaust gas turbine with the change of excess air factor, admission ratio, total efficien¬cy of turbine and compressor, scavenging pressure ratio, and scavenging temperature. In this study, all calculations are carried out by computer, and the theoretical engine performance is com¬pared with the actual engine performance which is offered from engine manufacturer. Following results are acquired by this study. The mean effective pressure is increased with decrease of excess air factor or increase of scavenging pressure ratio. As the admission ratio or total efficiency of tur¬bine is increased, the mean effective pressure is increased but the specific fuel consumption is decreased. Mean calculation error compared with the actual engine performance is under 5 per¬cents, therefore, this calculation method can be used in the design of diesel engine.

  • The cooling channel of the preburner for staged combustion engines was studied. The combustion pressure of the researched preburner is about 210 bar which is very high compared with the engines of the Korean Launch Vechicle and 30 ton class liquid rocket engines developed as a pre-research program. Also, the combustion is an oxygen rich process unlike the gas generators of open cycle kerosene engines. Thus the cooling process is very important to make the preburner stable. Many configurations for the preburner were developed and numerically analyzed. As a result, the pressure loss could be reached below the target.

  • In two-stroke engines, methods of evaluating scavenging effciency have been studied in parallel with trials for improvement of scavenging process. But simulating methods have a wide difference with difference with scavenging process in real engines and methods of evaluating scavening efficiency in real engines are very difficult and very expensive. This study shows that there is a possbility of evaluating scavenging efficiency in real engines very easily by analysis of in-cylinder pressure data. And as a characteristics two-stroke engines, the poly tropic indices in the process of compression are varies with degreeof scavenging and good representatives of scavenging efficiency.

  • The gas-centerd swirl injectors are widely used on the main combustor of large liquid propellant rocket engines. Since the gas-liquid propellants, such as kerosene and oxygen-rich gas combination, are mixed and burned in the high pressure condition over the critical pressure point, the cold-flow spray test in the atmospheric condition can not represent the actual spray pattern. To observe the near actual spray patterns of gas-centered swirl injector, the high pressure spray chamber and the control system were constructed. The operating sequence was controlled precisely to obtain clear visualization images.

  • A Mather type plasms gun is operated at below 1 torr with a energy storage system (4KJ, 16.5KV, 35nH) to study the conditions of the efficient plasma focus. When the $D_2$ gas filling pressure is 0.18 torr and the stored energy is 3.8KJ, the discharge current of max. 180KA is obtained and the average axial velocity of the plasma is about $7cm/\mu\textrm{s}$. This is lower than the calculated velocity with above conditions by the snow-plow model. The discrepancy is due to the currents flowing over the insulator surface. The plasma focus occurs at low pressure compared with the results obtained by Bruzzone. The reasons are such that the plasma gun employed in this experiment is large for tile stored energy and the concentration of the residual gas is comparatively high. It is confirmed by a Long counter that the neutrons are generated from the dense plasma focus.

  • The 30 tonf-class liquid rocket combustor currently being developed is designed to connect the fuel feeding line at a middle position of the supersonic nozzle in order to reduce both pressure loss in the regenerative cooling passage and overall envelope of the thrust chamber in spite of increase in design complexity. To verify the design of cooling passages including fuel ring, connecting holes, two-directional cooling channels and collectors, numerical analysis has been performed.

  • This work presents an experimental investigation of NOx emissions according to inlet air temperature (550-660 K), stoichiometric air ratio (${\lambda}$, 1.4-2.1), and elevated pressure (2-5 bar) in a High Press Combustor (HPC) equipped with a double cone burner, which was designed by Pusan Clean Coal Center (PC3). The exhaust-gas temperature and NOx emissions were measured at the end of the combustion chamber. The NOx emissions generally decreased as a function of increasing ${\lambda}$. On the other hand, NOx emissions were influenced by ${\lambda}$, inlet air temperature and pressure of the combustion chamber. In particular, when the inlet air temperature increased, the flammability limit was extended to leaner conditions. As a result, a higher adiabatic temperature and lower NOx emissions could be achieved under these operation conditions. The NOx emissions that were governed by thermal NOx were greatly increased under elevated pressures, and slightly increased at sufficiently low fuel concentrations (${\lambda}$ >1.8).

  • In this paper, the changes in performance parameters, e.g., the combustor pressure, turbine power, engine mixture ratio, temperature of gas generator, and product gas, of a liquid rocket engine employing gas generator cycle with the variations in propellant-supply pressure have been described. Engine performance is numerically calculated using the 13 major system-level variables of the rocket engine. The combustor pressure and turbine power increase with an increase in the oxidizer-supply pressure and decrease with an increase in fuel-supply pressure. The lower mixture ratio of gas generator for increased fuel mass flow rate decreases the gas generator gas temperature and deteriorates the gas material properties as the turbine working fluid. The turbine power decreases with an increase in fuel-supply pressure; this results in a decrease in the main-combustor pressure, which is directly proportional to engine thrust.

  • This study aims to develop the performance analysis program on the staged combustion cycle of the liquid rocket engine using liquid oxygen(LOx) as oxidizer, liquid hydrogen(LH2) and RP-1 as fuel. The developed analysis program can obtain the propellant mass flow rate, the specific impulse, and representative design values of engine components for the required thrust satisfying pressure, mass flow, and energy balance conditions. The analysis results show that the the specific impulses (Isp) compared to those of the real engines have been less than 1%. With additional constraints, the program will be improved for the system optimization.

  • A system design has been performed for a vacuum thrust 88 ton staged combustion cycle rocket engine. Previous research has been used to estimate the performance of the engine components. And the algorithm has been proposed to evaluate the converged engine system performance. The present methodolgy has been verified by comparing the published data for RD-180. The present work adopts the most of the previous KSLV-II engine heritage for both performance improvement and cost competitiveness. The combustion pressure has been decided as 12MPa considering manufacturing difficulty, cost and performance improvement, and as a result the vacuum specific impulse has increased by 23.4s.
