  • In the previous research, it has been found that water strider's legs are strongly water repellent due to hierarchical structure of hydrophobic setae on the legs. Here we propose an answer why they should be so hydrophobic by showing that the work required to remove a floating hydrophobic cylinder from an interface depends very sensitively on the contact angle of the cylinder: superhydrophobic cylinders require relatively little work to remove them from an interface. Also we experimentally study the work required to lift a leg out of water with different contact angles and compare our experimental results with a theoretical prediction.

  • The germarium contains the apical complex consisting of a multinucleated syncytium. Apical complex has a nutritive role for the early spermatogonia. Trophocytes are irregularly shaped and are distributed throughout the space from spermatogonial cysts to sperm bundles, and they increase in size by endopolyploidization. As meiotic divisions are not complete until the final moult, spermatogenesis continues even in the adult. Chromosome number is 2n=24. Spermiogenesis is divided into seven stages in terms of chromatin concentration, cytoplasmic granules, and the nuclear size and shape. These stages could be grouped into the spherical, the elongating and the rodform spermatids in shape.

  • Using 3D printing technology, we created a biomimetic water strider robot that can monitor environments. We found ways to increase the bearing capacity of the fluid-driven water strider robot by conducting experiments then comparing with more stable robots. The controller of the robot is based on Arduino, and can be controlled wirelessly with a Bluetooth module. The speed of the robot is 7.37 cm/s, and the bearing capacity is 29 g. A lithium polymer battery that can be charged with a solar cell was used as a power source, and both the charging and driving times were also explored.

  • The authors attempted to investigate the oxygen consumption rate of sexuals in the water-striders, Gerris paludum insuralis, at four temperature groups of 25, 30, 35 and $40^\\circ C$ in a series of studies on respiration of a heminetabolous insects. THe results are summarised as follows: (1) At $30^\\circ C$, the change of oxygen consumption rate according to the lapse of time was small in comparison with the other three temperature groups which shows a cyclic decreasing pattern. The rate during initial and final 5 minutes was much alike. Thereupon, the optimum temperature was regarded as $30^\\circ C$. (2) The oxygen consumption rate of male was higher than that of female. (3) The oxygen consumption rates at 25, 30, 35 and $40^\\circ C$ were 0.42, 0.49, 0.79 and 1.11 $\\mu$l/mg/h respectively. That is, the rate was increased as the temperature was increased. (4) The $Q_10$ of male showed a high value in the lower temperature interval ($25^\\circ C \\sim 35^\\circ C$), but the female showed a high value in the higher temperature interval ($30^\\circ C \\sim 40^\\circ C$). The mean $Q_10$ was 2.12. (5) The respiratory rate was decreased as the body weight was increased in the above fresh weight of 10mg and dry weight 5 mg. (6) The upper temperature threshold for respiration was $48.31^\\circ C$ and the lower temperature threshold was $17.68^\\circ C$. (7) The ceasing time of breathing at the other three temperature groups except $30^\\circ C$ was infered to be about 110 minutes after the start of experiment.

  • The water striders, gerris paludum insularis larvae which were fed with the drosophila melanogaster cultured on the appli diet and artificial diet, were reared in the growth cabinet controlled as the two constant temperature regimes of 25 c and 30 c under the condition of photoperiod 16l : 8d, light intensity 510 240 lux, relative humidity 65 3%, and in the natural state. The effects of temperature and diet on the devolopment of g. paludum insularis were analyzed and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The total developmental period of the water strider larvae fed with the d. melanogaster reared on the apple diet at the natural stste was the longest 40 days, and the total devopmental periods at 25 c and 30 c were 35 days and 27 days respectively. The tolal developmental period of larvae fed with d. melanogaster reared on the artifical diet at 25 c was the longest 42 dats, and the total developmental periods at natural stste and 30 c were 32 days and 27 days, respectively. 2. In the larval developmental stages, the fifth stage was longer than that of any stage. The duration of egg stage which was not influenced by diet at 25 c was the longest. 3. The water strider larvae fed which the d. melanogaster reared on the artificial diet at 25 c did not complete their devolopment. 4. No significant difference was odserved in the developmentperiod for diet at 30 c. but, there were significant differences in developmental periods for diet at 25 c and natural state. 5. The rate of adult emergence on the apple diet was higher than that of the artificial diet was higher than of the artificial diet. 6. The shapes of the survivorship curve were convex-curve. 7. The development periods of the larval stages of water striders might be affected to temperature and diet dependently.

RIE 조건은 Flow rate: 30 sccm, Temperature: $10^{\circ}C$ Pressure: 100 mTorr, Power: 200 W, Process Time: 5~50 min으로 조절하며 공정을 수행하였고 RIE공정 후 SAMs (Self-Assembly Monolayers)을 진행하였으며, 마지막으로 PDMS를 이용하여 mold공정을 진행하였다.

  • The formation of the acrosome during spermatogenesis in Gerris paludum was studied. The Golgi bodies are dispersed randomly in the cytoplasm at the early stage of the spermatocyte and get together to form several group of many bodies, and then they are equally divided into the spermatids by the meiotic divisions. The acroblast first appears in the form of a vesicle and soon an acrosomal granule is differentiated within it. The acroblast is separated from the acrosomal granule at the posterior of the nucleus and is finally sloughed off along the tail filament. The acrosome, after moving to the side of the nucleus opposite the mitochondrial derivatives, differentiates into two zones. The two basal bodies and the differentiated tip originate from the sheath. The basal bodies appear at the proximal part of the sheath simply in contact with the core on one side. During elongation and and narrowing of the acrosomes of the spermatids, they surround the one side at the base of the acrosome and finally all the other are immediately adjacent to the nucleus. The differentiated tip continues to the sheath at the anterior of the cores and is elongated prior to the two basal bodies. They appear to be contiguous twin-tubes, not a single granule in the later stage of the spermatids, and a group of the basal bodies in the sperm bundle.

  • In this study, through the analysis of the growth condition and prey of the largemouth bass, we tried to understand the characteristics of the aquatic animal community depending on the composition and shape of a artificial lake. The evaluation was conducted for Ilsan lake which is one of the largest urban artificial lakes in Korea. Weight gain rate of the Zone III (eco-zone) was more rapid based on the relationship of length and weight of largemouth bass. Total 16 and 9 species of fish were found in each Zone III and Zone I, II (artificial zones), which represented significantly higher diversity of fish species in Zone III than Zone I, II. Index of relative importance(IRI) was more diverse at Zone III and when considering the hunger rate the food stress was more serious at Zone I, II. the proportion of the population of fish, Zacco platypus revealed to be the dominant species, and Squalidus gracilis majimae and Rhinogobius brunneus inhabited only Zone III naturally rich. On account of low prey species diversity of Zone I, II, the Phylum Arthropoda like Heteroptera showed relatively higher prey ratio in stomach of largemouth bass than that of Zone III. It was possible to figure out aquatic animal community characteristics indirectly through analyzing the stomach contents of largemouth bass.

  • This study was conducted for searching the fauna, altitudinal distribution, and food patterns of the aquatic insects on Jeju island. The samples were collected from 102 freshwater wetlands during 2004 to 2008. The identified species were 100 belonged to 73 genera, 32 families, and 7 orders. One species of the genus Ephemeroptera, 23 of the Odonata, 1 of the Plecoptera, 23 of the Hemiptera, 47 of the Coleoptera, 3 of the Trichoptera, and 2 of the Diptera were identified in this study. The most widely distributed species was Sigara substriata, which was followed by Crocothemis servilia, Orthetrum albistylum, Gerris latiabdominis, and Anisops ogasawarensis. Sixteen species including Gynacantha japonica were very restrictedly distributed, which were sampled from only one site, respectively. The restrictedly distributed species (R) were classified into three altitudinal ranges, low (L), middle (M), and high (H). Ten species including Ranatra unicolor were RL type, only one species, Berosus japonicus, was RM, and 6 species including Nemoura KUb were RH. Narrowly distributed species (N) were 44 including Lethocerus deyrollei and intermediately distributed species (I) were 18 including Hesperocorixa distanti, and widely distributed species (W) were 21 including Nepa hoffmanni. According food uptake patterns, 75 species were carnivores, 18 herbivores, 5 omnivores, and 2 detritivores. Especially almost W were carnivores. From these results, we could concluded that the most aquatic insects species of Jeju island were characterized by their very limited altitudinal distribution range and carnivorous preference.
