Cellulose Electro-Active Paper (EAPap) is attractive as a biomimetic actuator because of its merits: it is lightweight, operates in dry conditions, has a large displacement output, has a low actuation voltage, and has low power consumption. Cellulose is regenerated so as to align its microfibrils, which results in a piezoelectric paper. When chemically bonded and mixed with carbon nanotubes, titanium oxide, zinc oxide, tin oxides, the cellulose EAPap can be used as a hybrid nanocomposite that has versatile properties and that can meet the requirements of many application devices. This paper presents trends in recent research on the cellulose EAPap, mainly on material preparation and its use in devices, including biosensors, chemical sensors, flexible transistors, and actuators. This paper also explains wirelessly driving technology for the cellulose EAPap, which is attractive for use in biomimetic robotics and micro-aerial vehicles.

Paper, textile and wood materials are mainly consisted of cellulose. Cellulose is high molecule and make up the strong crystalline structure by hydrogen bonds. In particular, the polymerization degree of cellulose are closely related to the strength of fiber, and the permanence. the useful life of fiber, also depends on the degradation of this substance. The viscosity of cellulose is considered to be an important indicator of fiber damage in high molecule polymers. The viscosity measurements with CED solution is used to measure the molecular weight and the degree of polymerization of cellulose. Cellulose viscosity of wood fibers is measured with TAPPI standard method T230. However, TAPPI standard method T230 is difficult to completely dissolving the cellulose of high molecular weight and large degree of polymerization, such as Korea traditional papers and fabrics made with mulberry, ramie, cotton fibers. In this study, The high viscosity of hanji and fabric was measured with TAPPI standard method T254. T254 method is that the cellulose specimen with the proper amount of weaker (0.167M CED) solution, and completely dissolved with the stronger (1.0M CED) solution. It was found that cellulose with high degree of polymerization was dissolved more easily in general CED method.

New materials and shapes for a humidifying element were developed which outperformed the widely used crisscross glass wool Glasdek media design. The new material consists of 50% cellulose and 50% PET. The parallel channel configuration was devised to reduce excessive pressure loss caused by the reduced height (from 7.0 mm to 5.0 mm) of the crisscross configuration. For the same crisscross configuration, the humidification efficiency of the cellulose/PET element was 26% higher than that of the glass wool element. For the same cellulose/PET material, humidification efficiency of the parallel channel configuration was 14% higher than that of the crisscross configuration. As for the pressure drops, the cellulose/PET element was 2-52% higher than those of the glass wool element. For the same cellulose/PET material, the pressure drop of the parallel channel configuration was 14% higher than that of the crisscross configuration. Data were compared against the predictions from existing correlations and those by the proposed model.
Generally, it has been know that AKD develops sizing efficiency by forming the chemical bond with cellulose in neutral paper making. However, there have been many expriments in opposition to this theory. This study was carried out to find whether there is chemical bond between AKD and cellulose or not. Also, it was investigated that how much the reacted AKD forming chemical bond and the unreacted AKD contribute to sizing degree respectively if chemical bond presents, and what caused AKD sized paper to migrate under high temperature. Besides, this work experimented several factors having influences on AKD sizing in paper amking.

Functional properties of packaging films prepared with cellulose derivatives were measured. As a presolvation treatments of celluloses, 95% ethanol solution for methylcellulose (MC), hydroxypropyl-methylcellulose (HPMC) and ethylcellulose (EC) and water for hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) were used. For film sheeting, the ethanol concentration of final cellulose solution should exceed 50% for MC, HPMC and HPC and 80% for EC. Thickness and functionalities of the prepared films were varied by type, molecular weight and viscosity of the cellulose and kind of plasticizer used. Tensile strength of MC, HPMC and HPC films were $67.7{\sim}275.4\;MPa$, $124.6{\sim}260.0\;MPa$, and $14.8{\sim}29.4\;MPa$, respectively. The strength of MC and HPMC films was higher than that of low density polyethylene (LDPE) films $(13.1{\sim}27.6\;MPa)$. Solubility of the cellulose films varied widely by plasticizer used and the films containing polyethyleneglycol (PEG) as a plasticizer was more soluble than the films by glycerol. Maximum water vapor permeability and oxygen permeability of the cellulose films was more than 1,000 folds and less than one-twelfth of the LDPE film, respectively.

In this study, cellulose-based bacterial pellets was used for the self-healing concrete manufacturing. The pellet is composed of complex cultured bacterial spore powder, methyl cellulose, two kinds of PVA nutrients and water, and is extruded through a hydraulic press to have a shape of 2mm in diameter to 3 to 4mm in length. Cellulose pellets expand at neutral pH, release bacteria and nutrients, and do not react in a basic environment, increasing the long-term survival rate of bacteria in cement mortar. In addition, pellet self-healing performance of pellet mortar was significantly higher than that of control mortar. Cellulose-based pellets are a new type of bacterial carrier system that will help develop self-healing concrete in the future by improving and optimizing pellets.
