Effect of Surface Washing Treatment on Quality of Fresh Ginseng during Storage (표면세척이 수삼의 저장 중 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was basic research to improve the existing method far distributing just harvested and sail-clad fresh ginseng. The quality of surface-washed fresh ginseng was compared to that of muddy fresh ginseng during storage at 0, 5, 10, and $20^{\circ}C$. After 45 days of storage, there was no difference in weight loss between the washed ginseng and the control at $0^{\circ}C$, but the loss was 46% and 37% lower in the washed than the control at $5^{\circ}C$ and $10^{\circ}C$, respectively. The ginseng stored at $20^{\circ}C$ after washing had less deterioration than the control stored at $10^{\circ}C$ for the same period. The sensory characteristics of the washed ginseng showed better quality scores ranging from 6.8 to 8.2, while the control ranged from 5.7 to 6.9 after 45 days of storage at $10^{\circ}C$. The washed ginseng had less viable cells, mold and yeast, and coliforms at 0.87, 1.55, and 0.95 log units, respectively, compared to the control, and this trend was maintained in the washed ginseng throughout storage.

  • This paper evaluated the structural improvements and new product development of cleaning machines. A cleaning machine was redesigned for structural improvements and new product development using a 3-D design program CATIA. In addition, structural analysis was conducted on the modeled cleaning machine using the ANSYS program. The total deformation, stress and strain were obtained by the pressure change. This result was applied to the new product development of cleaning machines.

Structural Analysis of High Pressure Cleaning Machine (고압세척기의 구조해석)

  • In this paper, a high pressure cleaning machine in field was disassembled and measured in order to develop a highly improved pressure cleaner in performance and real configuration was modeled by using 3-D design program CATA V5. In addition, fluid analysis was conducted on the modeled high pressure cleaning machine by using ANSYS finite element analysis program and visualize the pressure changes of internal fluid flow was visualized. This result will be applied to a new designed high pressure cleaning machine in future.

Clinical Implication of Malignant Pleural Lavage Cytology (PLC) in Primary Lung Cancer (원발성 폐암에서 악성 흉강 세척액의 임상적 의미)

  • The purpose of study is to evaluate the clinical implication of malignant Pleural Lavage Cytology (PLC) in primary lung cancer. 315 patients were examined with pleural lavage cytology in Asan Medical Center between November 1998 and August 2002. The patients were chosen from primary lung cancer patients with no pleural effusion according to preoperative radiologic examination; no tumor invasion into the chest wall and no diffuse pleural adhesion in intraoperative findings, The pleural cavity and lung were washed with 100 $m\ell$ of warm normal saline. The 315 patients consisted of 237 men and 78 women. The incidence of malignant PLC was found in 28 patients (8.9%). For patients in early stages (I & II), survival rate was 93.9% in positive malignant PLC and 85.7% in negative malignant PLC. 31 patients (13.6%) had local or distant recurrences; 2-year recurrence-free rate was 90.1% in negative PLC and 87.5% in positive PLC. The survival and recurrence-free rate in each stage were not statistically associated with the result of PLC. Median follow-up was 16.4 months from the surgery. To access implication of malignant PLC in primary lung cancer, a long-term follow-up and further study are required.

Study of Spin Jig Development for Cleaning of the PCB component (PCB기판 세척용 스핀 지그개발에 관한 연구)

  • This study examined PCB component cleaning on a PCB component surface, which has defects of precipitation type washing (existing rinse method), sealant and foreign material formed in the adhesive process that could not be removed easily. The spin jig was developed for PCB component cleaning, in which the PCB component settled down, to solve the conventional problem of the removal of foreign material with the centrifugal force by high speed rotation. The results are as follows. With decreasing fraction defect in PCB component washing, the development and substrate damage decreased by more than 80% according to the abstergent in the rotary type using the centrifugal force in the existing precipitation type. When the base plate showed a large difference with the time to include the process after washing the design using the existing method, easy attachment and separation of the PCB component could be possible. The washing time was enhanced 90% compared to the existing time. The reliability of the security and washing collaboration of the design and stability of the cleaning process could be secured so that there was no phenomenon of secession, the PCB component fixed for a cleansing rotation jig could maintain a fixed force by the centrifugal force. The stability and reliability of the washing process and the defective rate could be improved to less than 1%.

Remediation Design Using Soil Washing and Soil Improvement Method for As Contaminated Soils and Stream Deposits Around an Abandoned Mine (토양 세척법과 석회를 첨가한 토양 안정화 공법을 이용한 폐광산 주변 비소 오염 토양 및 하천 퇴적토 복원)

  • Removal efficiencies of soil washing and soil improvement processes to remediate farmland soils and stream deposits around Goro abandoned mine were investigated with batch and column experiments. For As-contaminated farm-land soils around Goro mine, batch tests to quantify As extraction rate from contaminated soils and lime treated contaminated soils were performed. The contaminated soil mixed with lime decreased As extraction rate less than one fourth, suggesting that the soil improvement method mixed with lime dramatically decrease As extraction rate. A storage dam will be constructed in the lower part of the main stream connected to Goro abandoned mine and the amount of As extracted from the bottom soils of reservoir could be the main source to contaminate water of reservoir. The decrease of As extraction amount from the bottom in reservoir, caused by the application of the soil improvement method was investigated from the physically simulated column experiment and results showed that As extraction rate decreased to one forty when 1% lime mixed soil improvement was applied to contaminated soils. For contaminated stream deposits connected Goro mine, the removal efficiency of the soil washing method was investigated with batch experiments. Hydrochloric acid, citric acid, acetic acid and distilled water were used as soil washing solution and 0.01, 0.05, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 N of washing solution were applied to extract As. When washing with 0.05 N of hydrochloric acid or citric acid, more than 99.9% of As was removed from stream deposits, suggesting that As contaminated stream deposits around Goro mine be successfully remediated with the soil washing process. Total volumes of contaminated soils and deposits needed for remediation were calculated based on three different reme-diation target concentrations and the operation cost of soil washing for calculated soil volumes was estimated. Results from this research could be directly used to make a comprehensive countermeasure to remediate contaminated area around Goro mine and also many contaminated areas similar to this research area.

  • Deep sternal wound infection (with or without acute mediastinitis) is a serious complication of open heart surgery, with high rates of associated morbidity and mortality, and prolonged hospitallization. The result of treatment largely depends on timely diagnosis and appropriate surgical management. Postoperative deep sternal wound infections in 4 cases were successfully treated with extensive debridement, pressurized jet irrigation with antibiotic solution, sternal refixation by Robicsek method, and dilute antibiotic irrigation via irrigation-suction system. We report 4 cases with review of articles.

The Effect of Washing Conditions on the Dimension and Mechanical Properties of Spandex Yarns (세척조건에 스판덱스사의 길이와 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • The durability of a stretch fabric is mainly related to the change in the dimension and mechanical properties of elastomeric fibers during wearing and washing. In this study, we examined the effects of washing temperature, presoaking time and the number of washing cycles on the change in length, tenacity, elongation at break, and permanent elongation after six repeated cycles of $100\%$ extension and relaxation of spandex yams with varying fineness and with a different rate of extension during heat-set. The spandex yarns continued to shrink as the wash temperature and the number of wash cycles increased. In addition, the finer spandex yams decreased in length more than the thicker yams. The increase in temperature and presoaking time tended to cause a slight decrease in the tenacity and elongation at break of the spandex yarns. Permanent elongation of the spandex yams also increased as the temperature, presoaking time and the number of washing cycles increased. Moreover, an extended presoaking time followed by washing at $40\%$ like repeated washing cycles showed the great increase in the permanent elongation of spandex yams. The thinner spandex yin had a better elasticity than the thicker one, since the former had a lower permanent elongation percentage than the latter. Based on the DSC thermograms, the melting points of the spandex yarns after washing were almost the same as those of the spandex yarns before washing.

Optimum Chemical Cleaning Conditions for Ceramic Microfiltration Membrane Process (세라믹 정밀여과막 공정을 위한 최적 약품세척 방안)

  • This study was carried out to find the optimum chemical cleaning (CIP) conditions for ceramic microfiltration membrane process of Y drinking water treatment plant. B train consists of coagulation as pretreatment process with membrane was chemically cleaned 9 times more than that of A train with ozonation and coagulation. The frequent CIP of B train was due to improper CIP method suggested by membrane manufacture as well as different membrane fouling between A and B train resulting from the different pretreatment processes. That is, recovery rate of CIP was overestimated because the rate was calculated based on normalized trans membrane pressure (TMP) rather than normalized permeability. And also, iron oxide fouling was ineffectively removed by citric acid. By using a mixture of 1% citric acid and 0.1 N sulfuric acid as reagent for acid CIP step, the recovery rate of CIP was the highest while CIP efficiency by 0.1 N sulfuric acid was the lowest. When sulfuric acid concentration increased from 0.1 N to 0.3 N in mixture, total recovery rate of CIP was not increased due to the decreased CIP efficiency in alkali CIP step by 0.3% NaOCl although its rate in acid CIP step was increased. It was proved through the experiment result of CIP sequence changes that an acid followed by alkali CIP was more effective than that of the reverse method.

Effect of Water Temperature and Packing Type on Quality of Fresh-Cut Sesame Leaf (세척 깻잎의 선도 유지에 대한 세척수 온도와 포장 형태의 영향)

  • Quality attributes of fresh-cut sesame leaf (Perilla frutescens var. japonica) as affected by hydrocooling and packing were investigated in terms of weight loss, respiration, vitamin C content, total chlorophyll content, microbial load and sensory properties during storage at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$. Fresh sesame leaf was trimmed and washed with cold water (1, $5^{\circ}C$) as well as tap water ($13^{\circ}C$) for 30 sec 3 times and then packaged in PP (polypropylene) film bag and PETE (polyethylene terephthalate) tray, and stored for 9 days at 4 and $10^{\circ}C$. Weight loss was decreased by washing and packing. Respiration rate was increased slowly over the storage at $4^{\circ}C$. Vitamin C content and total chlorophyll contents of sesame leaf packaged within PETE tray decreased gradually during storage. Hydrocooling and packing within PETE tray treatments resulted in approximately $1{\sim}2\;log\;CFU/g$ reduction of microbial load.
