  • Type classification is a very needed step in recognizing huge character set language such as korean characters. Since most previous researches are based on the composition rule of Korean characters, it has been difficult to correctly classify composite vowel characters and problem space was not divided equally for the lack of classification of last consonant which is relatively bigger than other graphemes. In this paper, I Propose a new type classification method in which horizontal vowel is extracted before vortical vowel and last consonants are further classified into one of five small groups based on horizontal projection profile. The new method uses 19 character types which is more stable than previous 6 types or 15 types. Through experiments on 1.000 frequently used character sets and 30.614 characters scanned from several magazines, I showed that the proposed method is more useful classifying Korean characters of huge set.

  • Purpose: Some gastric cancer patients in whom the cancer has infiltrated up to the muscularis propria (mp) have a good postoperative course similar to that of early gastric cancer (EGC) patients (this does not match the general classification of gastric cancer). Therefore, we performed a retrospective analysis of 125 patients with mp gastric cancer based on the degree of mp invasion. Materials and Methods: The clinicopathologic features of 125 cases of mp gastric cancer were subdivided according to depth of invasion, and were retrospectively reviewed and compared with the surgical features of 222 patients with gastric cancer invading the submucosa (sm). For each tumor, using the section that showed the greatest extent of invasion, we evaluated the degree of tumor invasion into the mp layer at a magnification of $\times$100. The patients were classified into 2 groups: mp1, the tumor was limited to the first of the 3 mp layers, and mp2, the tumor had expanded beyond the first layer. Results: Patients with mp1 (n=50) had a significantly lower incidence of lymph node metastasis, and a smaller tumor size than patients with mp2 (n=75) (P=0.01 and P=0.029, respectively). The 5-year survival rate of mp1 patients was significantly better than that of mp2 patients ($95.3\%\;vs.\;77.6\%$, P=0.0282), but was similar to that ($91.2\%$) of the 222 sm patients. The 5-year survival rate of mp patients without lymph node metastasis (n=55) was significantly better than that of those with lymph node metastasis (n=70)($93.3\%\;vs.\;78.2\%$, P=0.0192). Patients with mp1 had a significantly higher incidence of lymph node metastasis ($42.5\%\;vs\;23\%$, P=0.006) than patients with sm. Conclusion: There were clear differences in clinical features between the mp1 and the mp2 patients. Subdivision of mp gastric cancer according to the depth of invasion may enable a more precise prognosis and a more pertinent treatment plan for mp patients. In particular, as the clinicopathological findings and surgical outcomes for mp1 patients were akin to those of the sm patients, mp1 patients may require treatment analogous to that administered to patients with sm gastric cancer. • This study began from the question, "is there a way to efficiently apply industrial demand in the university curriculum?" Research focused on how to actively accept and respond to the era of the NCS (National Competency Standards). In order to apply NCS to individual departments of the university, industrial personnel must positively participate to form a practical-level curriculum by the NCS, which can be linked to the work and qualifications. A valid procedure for developing a curriculum based on the NCS of this study is as follows: First, the university must select a specific classification of NCS considering the relevant industry outlook, the speciality of professors in the university, the relationship with regional industries and the prospects for future employment, and the need for industrial manpower. Second, departments must establish a type of human resource that compromises goals for the university education and the missions of the chosen NCS. In this process, a unique competency unit of the university that can support the basic or applied subjects should be added to the task model. Third, the task model based on the NCS should be completed through the verification of each competency unit considering the acceptance or rejection in the curriculum. Fourth, subjects in response to each competency units within the task model should be developed while considering time and credits according to university regulations. After this, a clear subject description of how to operate and evaluate the contents of the curriculum should be created. Fifth, a roadmap for determining the period of operating subjects for each semester or year should be built. This roadmap will become a basis for the competency achievement frame to decide upon the adoption of a Process Evaluation Qualification System. In order for the NCS to be successfully established within the university, a consensus on the necessity of the NCS should be preceded by professors, students and staff members. Unlike a traditional curriculum by professors, the student-oriented NCS curriculum is needed sufficient understanding and empathy for the many sacrifices and commitment of the members of the university.

  • This paper focuses on the geographical characteristics and the spatial distributions and patterns of the road names in the new address system for which all the 183 road names of Cheongju City has been used. All 183 road names in Cheongju City and their textural information are analyzed and classified into four main categories and six divisions as sub-category. Each type is mapped and its spatial patterns are discussed in order to identify the interaction between the road name and the geographical characteristics of each type. From the discussion stated in the paper, it can be inferred that the road name is not only a representative place name in an area, but also presents an important geographical feature reflecting the toponymy of the cultural and historical backgrounds of an area. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that for road naming, various aspects such as geographical backgrounds and characteristics should be considered. These are directly related to the publicity and utilization of the road names to the public who is still unfamiliar with the new address system to be used. Finally, various geographical topics and approaches such as toponymy and spatial analysis are proposed for further geographical research, which will contribute to the extent of geographical research scopes.

  • Of the collection of public libraries in Korea, the literature collection is the largest, and Korean fictions, about 14% of the entire collection constitute the largest single subject. However, in the Korean Decimal Classification(KDC) Korean fiction is represented in one section, that is, 813 which corresponds to the only one of thousand divisions. More specifically, only two sub-sections, 813.6 and 813.7 are supposed to be assigned to the huge collection of modern Korean fiction, and, in reality, only 813.6 is being used in most libraries. Even with the use of book numbers, such disproportionate allocation of classification numbers would definitely lower the discriminative capacity of call numbers given to each item. It would also bring about difficulties in both shelving, on the libraries' side, and finding items from shelf, on the users' side. This study aims to examine the issues related to classifying Korean fictions in public libraries, including the composition of KDC schedules and the actual practice of classification, and then proposes the measures for improving the classification of Korean fictions.

  • The aim of this study is to produce land cover maps using satellite imagery with various degrees of high resolution and then compare the accuracy of the image types and categories. For the land cover map produced on a small-scale classification the estuary area around the Nakdong river, including an urban area, farming land and waters, was selected. The images were classified by analyzing the aerial photos taken from KOMPSAT2, Quickbird and IKONOS satellites, which all have a resolution of over 1m to the naked eye. Once all of the land cover maps with different images and land cover categories had been produced they were compared to each other. Results show that image accuracy from the aerial photos and Quickbird was relatively higher than with KOMPSAT2 and IKONOS. The agreement ratio for the large-scale classification across the classification methods ranged between 0.934 and 0.956 for most cases. The Kappa value ranged between 0.905 and 0.937; the agreement ratio for the middle-scale classification was 0.888~0.913 and the Kappa value was 0.872~0.901. The agreement ratio for the small-scale classification was 0.833~0.901 and the Kappa value was 0.813~0.888. In addition, in terms of the degree of confusion occurrence across the images, there was confusion on the urbanized arid areas and empty land in the large-scale classification. For the middle-scale classification, the confusion mainly occurred on the rice paddies, fields, house cultivating area and artificial grassland. For the small-scale classification, confusion mainly occurred on natural green fields, cultivating land with facilities, tideland and the surface of the sea. The findings of this study indicate that the classification of the high resolution images with the naked eye showed an agreement ratio of over 80%, which means that it can be used in practice. The findings also suggest that the use of higher resolution images can lead to increased accuracy in classification, indicating that the time when the images are taken is important in producing land cover maps.
