  • A high temperature fabric filter was developed and characterized in order to solve the various problems encountered in the operation of industrial fabric filters. Four kinds of dusts generated in the typical domestic industry were used for its characterization, coke dust from a steel manufacturing process, cement dust from a cement manufacturing process, fly ash from a fluidized-bed combustor, and incinerator ash from a waste plastics incinerator. The physical and chemical properties of the high temperature fabric filter were analyzed in terms of mean flow pore pressure, bubble point pore diameter, mean flow pore diameter, pore size distribution, and the changes in tensile strength and initial elastic modulus under $SO_2$ and $NO_2$ atmospheres. Pressure drop, dust penetration, and figure of merit for the fabric filter were also investigated in a bench-scale filter testing unit. The fabric filter developed in this study had good physical and chemical filter properties and showed a very applicability to typical industrial dusts treatments.

  • Recently, surface finishing and protection materials were developed to restore performance of the deteriorated concrete and inhibiting corrosion of the reinforcing-bar. For this purpose, surface protection agent as well as coatings are used. Coatings have the advantage of low Permeability of $CO_2,\;SO_2$ and water. However, for coatings such as epoxy, urethane and acryl, long-term adhesive strength is reduced and the formed membrane of those is blistered by various causes. Also when organic coatings are applied to the wet surface of concrete, those have a problem with adhesion. On the other hand, surface protection agent penetrates into pore structure in concrete through capillary and cm make a dense micro structure in concrete as a result of filling effect. Furthermore, the chemical reaction between silicate from surface protection agent and cement hydrates can also make a additional hydration product which is ideally compatible with concrete body. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of penetrative surface protection agent(SPA) by evaluating several concrete durability characteristics. The results show that the concrete penetrated surface protection agent exhibited higher durability characteristics for instance, carbonation velocity coefficient, resistance to chemical attack and chloride ion penetration than the plain concrete. These results due to formation of a discontinuous macro-pore system which inhibits deterioration factors of concrete by changed the pore structure(porosity and pore size distributions) of the concrete penetrated surface protection agent.

  • The objective of the paper is to experimentally investigate the effect of commercially avaliable fiber types such as polypropylene (PP), nylon (NY), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose (CL) on the engineering properties of concrete for pavement application. The results, showed the fluidity tends to decrease with fibers addition compared to that of plain concrete. As for the effect of fiber types on fluidity loss, use of NY appear to give the most favorable results among all of the fiber types investigated in this study while the effect of the fibers on air content was negligible. For the properties of hardened concrete, compressive and flexural strengths increased with fibers compared to plain concrete. The contribution of NY fibers to strength was the highest followed in the order by NY, PVA, PP, and CL. However, in the case of the splitting tensile strength, its values were increased with NY and PP only. For porosity based on MIP(mercury intrusion penetration) method, the number of around 1 was observed when NY was mixed resulting in increased cumulated amounts of porosity compared with that of plain mix. Thus, based on the consideration of fluidity and strength it was found that the addition of NY fiber showed the optimal results under the conditions applied in this study.

  • In this study, highly monodispersed porous carbon microcapsules with a hollow core were synthesized using polystyrene (PS) beads as a hard template. The surface of PS was first modified with polyvinylpyrollidone (PVP) for the easy attachment of inorganic silica sol. After coating the surface of PVP modified PS microspheres with SBA-16 sol, the carbon microcapsules with a hollow macroporous core were fabricated through reverse replication method by filling carbon sources in the mesopores of silica mold. The hollow carbons having a mesoporous shell structure and narrow particle size distribution could be obtained after the carbonization of carbon source and the dissolution of silica mold by HF solution. The mesoporous characteristics and electrochemical properties of hollow carbon microcapsules were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, $N_2$ adsorption/desorption analysis and cyclic voltammetry. They showed the high electric conductivity and capability for use as efficient electro-materials such as a supercapacitor.

  • The physical properties of polymer concrete were investigated for development of high-performance construction materials. Various specimens of polymer concrete were prepared using unsaturated polyester resin as the polymer-binder with the various dosage of calcium carbonate as microfiller (5~20 wt %) and fine aggregate(10~50 wt %). For the evaluation of the physical properties of polymer concretes, tests such as compressive strength, flexural strength, water absorption test, hot water immersion test, acid resistance test and pore size distribution analysis were conducted. As a result, it is concluded that compressive and flexural strengths of polymer concretes increased up to 4 times than those of conventional cement concrete. Whereas the compressive and flexural strengths of polymer concretes tested after hot water immersion, compared with those of polymer concretes tested before hot water immersion, decreased about 67%, 47%, respectively. By hot water immersion, total pore volume and porosity(%) of polymer concretes were remarkable increased due to decomposition of polymer binder. And also, it is showed that water absorption(%) and weight loss(%) of polymer concrete specimens by acid immersion, compared with those of ordinary portland cement concrete, decreased about 1/100, 1/27, respectively.

  • For the development of the environment-friendly insulating composite materials, natural cellulose (wood chip and sawdust) was used as a core material and activated Hwangtoh was used as a binder. Various specimens were prepared with the water/binder ratio and natural cellulose/binder ratio. The physical properties of these specimens were then investigated through compressive and flexural strength test, absorption test, hot water resistance test, thermal conductivity, measurement of pore distribution and observation of micro-structures using scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results showed that the absorption ratio increased with the increase of natural cellulose/binder ratio but decreased remarkably with the increase of polymer/binder ratio. The compressive and flexural strength development varied appreciably with the increase of water/binder ratio and natural cellulose/binder ratio. On the other hand, thermal conductivity decreased with the increase of natural cellulose/binder ratio and polymer/binder ratio. Through SEM, it was found that activated Hwangtoh that reacted with water formed a hydrate crystal leading to the compact structure and the total pore volume of the specimen using activated Hwangtoh was smaller than that of the non-activated Hwangtoh.

  • For the recycling of rapid-cooled steel slag, various specimens were prepared with the various replacement ratios of the rapid-cooled steel slag and the addition ratios of polymer binders. The physical properties of these specimens were then investigated by absorption test, compressive strength test, flexural strength test and hot water resistance test, and the pore and the micro-structure analysis was performed using scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the flexural strength increased with the increase of rapid-cooled steel slag and polymer binder, but the compressive strength showed a maximum strength at a certain proportion. By the hot water resistance test, compressive strength and flexural strength decreased remarkably and the total pore volume increased but the pore diameter decreased. SEM observation of the structure before the hot water resistance test revealed a very compact infusion of structure but the decomposition or thermal degradation appeared in polymer binders when observed after the hot water resistance test.

  • This study is to investigate the relationship between pore structures of activated carbons and adsorption characteristics of toluene vapor using dynamic adsorption method. The surface areas of below $10{\AA}$ in the pore diameter of activated carbons used in this experiment were in the range of 72 -93 % of total cumulative surface area and the toluene vapor equilibrium adsorption capacities were in the range of 350 - 390mg/g. Activated carbons having larger toluene adsorption capacity than the compared activated carbons had relatively pores in the pore diameter range of $7-10{\AA}$. Linear relationship between equilibrium adsorption capacity and cumulative sur- face area was in the diameter range of over $7{\AA}$. It was thought that toluene vapor was relatively well adsorbed on surfaces of pores of over $7{\AA}$.

  • Test specimens of polymer-cement concrete composites were prepared using styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) latex, ethylenevinyl acetate(EVA) and polyacrylic ester(PAE) emulsions as polymer dispersions in cement modified system at constant slump($10{\pm}0.5cm$), then compressive and flexural strengths water absorption, pore size distribution, and microstructures were investigated. Compressive and flexural strengths of these composites were remarkably improved with an increase of polymer-cement ratio. These composites had a desirable pore size distribution against frost damage due to a small capillary pore volume. Continuous polymer film was able to form in higher than 15% of polymer cement ratio.
