A Study on Strength and Durability Characteristics of Cemented Weathered Mudstone (풍화 이암 고결토의 강도 및 내구성 특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, in order to recycle a large amount of rocks and weathered mudstones produced by civil engineering projects such as railways and highways, as materials for roadbeds or embankment materials, circumferential specimens with a diameter of 5 cm and a height of 10 cm were made. A mudstone that weathered rapidly during rainfall was collected from Pohang construction sites. The weathered mudstone passed through a 2 mm sieve. It was prepared with the cement ratio, the sand ratio, curing condition and curing days. Three specimens were prepared according to each condition and then the unconfined compressive test, durability test and SEM analysis were performed to evaluate the engineering properties of the cemented soil. In the case of 28 days cured specimen, the strength of under-water cured specimens was 32-55% and the durability index was about 15% higher than air cured specimens. In addition, when the CR increased from 8% to 16%, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of pure mudstone cemented soil under water increased by about 1.6 times and the durability index increased by about 1.9 times. When the SR increased from 0% to 50%, the UCS of the specimen with SR = 10% was slightly less than or equal to specimen with SR = 0%. Then, as the SR became 30-50%, the UCS increased up to 51%. Unlike the UCS, the durability index increased continuously as the SR increased. As a result of SEM analysis, when SR was 50% rather than SR = 0%, the contact between sand particles increased and they were connected to each other. Such contact between these particles resulted in the increase of strength.

Dynamic Damping Characteristics of Grouthed Coal Ash (약액처리된 석탄회의 동적 감쇠특성)

  • The final purpose of this study is to examine the uses of coal ash, by-product from thermal power plant as a type of filling-embankment materials and the reuses of ash ponds. In this time, to investigate the dynamic properties, we made the test piece specimen with coal ashes, and obtained the damping ratio. In place(ash pond), the damping property by underground wall was investigated before and after soil improvements. The damping ratio of coal ash test piece specimen of 12% cement is the highest and that of 9% cement or chemical grout, that of 6% cement is in order. In same coal ash test piece, the damping ratio increases with decreasing the void ratio. In conclusion, it could be said that the damping ratio increases with the stiffness of materials. In the ash pond, the damping effect is the most when trench is set through the vibration wave propagation course, and when soil is improved the higher stiffness of the improved soil is, the more damping effect appeared. It is justified to obtain not only the dropping of permeability and the strength increase, but also the damping effect fairly by soil improvements.

  • Until recently the other attempts except linear elastic analysis using assumed elastic modulus had not been made in order to evaluate the settlement of the rock fill materials in Korea. Especially, it was almost impossible to predict the precise settlement of the breakwater structure made with dumped rubble stone. In this study, 3 sets of large scaled triaxial compression tests for porous basaltic quarry rocks were carried out and numerical simulation of those triaxial compression tests were performed applying non linear elastic model. Two stress-strain behaviors were compared to study the adaptability of hyperbolic constitutive model for the rubble stone. The results showed quite good agreements between the two stress-strain behaviors. Thus, the hyperbolic constitutive model is thought to be alternative approach evaluate the settlements of the loose rock-fill material.

  • The Green Wall system, developed in Austria early 1960, is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Green wall has pro-environmental advantages that able to grow grass in front space of stretchers and decrease cutting ground. In Europe, Green wall used without other reinforcement method. However, green wall used with other reinforcement method like a soil nailing because of environmental problem. This study was performed to introduce the design case by 'Two-Body Translation mechanism' to be able to consider distribution of earth pressure in the soil nailing when designing the green wall using soil nailing system. Also, this study attempts to evaluate the earth pressure change when advanced soil nailing system is constructed using $FLAC^{2D}$ ver. 3.30 program and 'Two-Body Translation mechanism'.

  • The Green Wall system is one of segmental concrete crib type earth retaining wall. Green wall is constructed as procedures that lay the front stretchers, rear stretchers and headers then making a rigid body through harden filled soil of interior cell. Recently, Green Wall method is applied in variable cutting ground construction because of advantage which minimize to cut base ground. In case of Green Wall method is constructed with soil nail method, expect that total system stability will increase more than flexible facing because of facing stiffness is big. However, in this case of design, facing stiffness is not considered so that is poor economy. Hence, in this study, stability increasing effect of total system analyze about that soil nail method is constructed with rigidity facing like a Green Wall method. In present study, laboratory model tests was performed for analysis on stability increasing effect of total system about changing stiffness of facing. LEM analysis conducted for evaluation on safety factor of total system sliding that facing condition changed.

  • On the international provision on prohibition of ocean dumping of waste, tap water sludge has been buried or recycled on th low value added product as landfill. Due to the tap water sludge having high inorganic content, differing from the sewage sludge, it is possible to use as a usable resource by suitable process. We have studied on hydro thermal processing of tap water sludge with phosphoric acid and finally synthesize a artificial zeolite having a deodorization property. To use it as a building material, it has to be solidification. This study is on the properties of artificial zeolite synthsized and solidification properties by various types of solidifier. It is showed that the slaked lime is the best on setting property and its optimum content is 30-60 weight proportion. Solid by solidified by slaked lime has low strength and excellent deodorization performance, so it is possible to use as a functional pannel as gypsum board.

  • Triaxial compression tests were performed with control of vertical stress, confined pressure(${\sigma}_H$), and injection velocity by means of impervious soil samples with a different grain size, density and grout density. By measuring pore water pressure at the time of vertical fracturing around the bore-hole, relationships between main factors are described, and the factors are pore water pressure, confined pressure, vertical fracturing injection pressure(${\sigma}$) and the tension strength(${\sigma}_t$). The hydraulic fracturing of soft clay was occurred at the pressure which was less than the pressure obtained by the theory of elasticity. It was found that the above result was the influence of pore water pressure due to injection pressure($U_a$) and pore water pressure due to confined pressure($U_i$). Therefore, the vertical injection pressure at the time of fracturing needs to be changed as follows. $${\sigma}=2{\cdot}{{\sigma}_H}-(U_a+U_i)+{\sigma}_t$$.

Temperature Effect on the Compaction Characteristic of Cohesionless Soil (온도에 따른 사질토의 다짐 특성)

  • Among several factors controlling soil compaction, temperature is the factor that varies with region and season. Although earthwork is performed in many projects in the cold regions of the earth, studies on quantifying soil compaction associated with temperature are limited. This experimental study investigates the temperature effect on the soil compaction of cohesionless soil. Jumunjin sand was selected for the tests to represent cohesionless clean sand, which is widely used as an engineering fill at petrochemical projects such as northern Alberta of Canada and Russia. The laboratory test program consists of performing a series of standard proctor tests varying temperature of soil samples ranging from $-10^{\circ}C$ to $17^{\circ}C$. Test results indicate that soil specimen volume expansion occurred from bulking and its range was 0% to 6% with zero above temperature. For increasing temperature from $0^{\circ}C$ to $17^{\circ}C$, water content corresponding to maximum volume (minimum dry unit weight) was decreased and water content corresponding to minimum volume (maximum dry unit weight observed after reaching minimum dry unit weight) was slightly increased with increasing temperature. In zero below temperature, dry unit weight gradually decreased with increasing water content. In this case, no bulking effect was found and soil specimen volume increased due to the higher unit volume of ice.

Development of Model for Structural Evaluation of Anti-Freezing Layer (동상방지층의 구조적 평가를 위한 모형 개발)

  • The thickness of anti-freezing layer has been empirically determined using the frost depth obtained from the freezing index and has not been generally considered as a structural layer in pavement design procedure. In fact, the anti-freezing layer makes a role in structural layer and enables to reduce the total thickness of pavement system. The objective of this study is to develop the statistical regression model for evaluating the structural capacity of anti-freezing layer using Falling Weight Deflectormeter(FWD) test data in asphalt pavements. The FWD testing was conducted at the embankment, cutting, and boundary area of various test sections to estimate the structural capacity of anti-freezing layer in different foundation condition. It is observed from this testing that the center deflections of pavement structure with anti-freezing layer are smaller than those without anti-freezing layer ranging from 0.4 to 82.6%. To determine the variables of statistical model, the correlation study has been conducted between various FWD deflection indexes and the anti-freezing layer thickness. It is found that the ${\Delta}BDI$(%)(${\Delta}Basin$ Damage Index(%)) is highly correlated with anti-freezing layer thickness. The ${\Delta}BDI$(%) model were developed for evaluating structural capacity of anti-freezing layer using linear mixed-effect models.

Structural Behavior of the Buried flexible Conduits in Coastal Roads Under the Live Load (활하중이 작용하는 해안도로 하부 연성지중구조물의 거동 분석)

  • Soil-steel structures have been used for the underpass, or drainage systems in the road embankment. This type of structures sustain external load using the correlations with the steel wall and engineered backfill materials. Buried flexible conduits made of corrugated steel plates for the coastal road was tested under vehicle loading to investigate the effects of live load. Testing conduits was a circular structure with a diameter of 6.25m. Live-load tests were conducted on two sections, one of which an attempt was made to reinforce the soil cover with the two layers of geo-gird. Hoop fiber strains of corrugated plate, normal earth pressures exerted outside the structure, and deformations of structure were instrumented during the tests. This paper describes the measured static and dynamic load responses of structure. Wall thrust by vehicle loads increased mainly at the crown and shoulder part of the conduit. However additional bending moment by vehicle loads was neglectable. The effectiveness of geogrid-reinforced soil cover on reducing hoop thrust is also discussed based on the measurements in two sections of the structure. The maximum thrusts at the section with geogrid-reinforced soil cover was 85-92% of those with un-reinforced soil cover in the static load tests of the circular structure; this confirms the beneficial effect of soil cover reinforcement on reducing the hoop thrust. However, it was revealed that the two layers of geogrid had no effect on reducing the overburden pressure at the crown level of structure. The obtained values of DLA decrease approximately in proportion to the increase in soil cover from 0.9m to 1.5m. These values are about 1.2-1.4 times higher than those specified in CHBDC.
