A Study on Lateral Displacement of Caisson Constructed on Improved Ground (개량 지반에 설치된 케이슨의 측방변위에 대한 연구)

  • In case of building up port facilities on soft ground, unsymmetrical surcharge of embankment, which make the excess pore water pressure to increase, causes to occur lateral displacement due to plasticity of soil. A study on lateral displacement and settlement of the caisson, which is installed on improved ground, was accomplished. The field measurement data and calculated values obtained from FEM program of Plaxis were compared and analyzed. For numerical analysis, the properties of soils, constructions stage and time were considered. Lateral displacement was measured at the point of inclinometers installed in front of caisson. Settlement was measured at the center of extra embankment behind of caisson. Comparison of measured and calculated for lateral displacement showed that the calculated value was greater than the measured, and increasing trend was different. The calculated value showed step increasing as step extra embankment applied, whereas the measured gradually was increased. For settlement of embankment, the amount of both measured and calculated were similar, but the trend was different like that of lateral movement.

  • In this study, the measurement results of the coastal deep soft ground buried in the upper part of the dredged clay were analyzed and compared with the current specification standards. Based on the results, a suitable proposal was suggested for the selection, installation, data arrangement, and analysis of each instrument used in the deep soft ground improvement construction. The pore water pressure meter has a range of 1.5 times or more of the expected measurement range, considering the field conditions of the soft ground. The groundwater level meter installed in the horizontal drainage layer checks the change in the groundwater level during the embanking as well as the performance of the catchment well and the horizontal drainage layer. Therefore, it is important to manage so that the groundwater level exists inside the horizontal drainage layer during embanking. It is enough to install the inclinometer in the gravel layer below the soft ground or weathered rock with an N value of 40 or more for the deep soft ground. It seems desirable to install a screw type for differential settlement meter. However, the screw type should not settle due to its own weight. Considering that it is a dredged landfill where subsidence occurs significantly, it is sufficient to manage the tolerance of leveling at about 10 mm (L is the one-way distance (km)).

The Relationship between Loading Velocity and Ground Heaving Characteristics (재하속도와 지반융기 특성의 상호관계)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze lateral displacement behavior of clay layers in case of the banking in soft ground through model tests. Seven model tests varying with thickness of soft clay and loading velocity are performed to correlate between ground heaving and loading velocity. In case of low loading velocity, vertical settlement below loading plate and small ground heaving are obviously observed. In case of the high loading velocity, it is shown that both soil displacement at the end of a loading plate and surface heaving are large. In addition, the calculated displacements show good agreement with three cases of field measurements in clay with high moisture contents so that we can predict the range of heaving area and the amount of heaving.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation on the ways of utilizing bed sediment as levee materials by laboratory tests. A series of laboratory tests were performed to asses the improved engineering characteristics of bed sediment using admixture cement and weathered granite soils. In this study, several tests such as the grain size analysis test, direct shear test, permeability test, unconfined compression test were peformed. The results of the analyses indicated that the treated bed sediment with cement and weathered granite soils can have the adaptability to the fill material for levee.

  • It is difficult to acquire good-quality fill material for levee in field and it is the most important factor of levee construction technology to use the bed sediment for the safe and economic construction. So, it is necessary to evaluate geotechnical characteristics of bed sediment, design and construction method through field application tests. In this study geotechnical characteristics of Hyunpoong bed sediment (SP) in Daegu were analyzed, and laboratory/field compaction test for mixing granite weathered soil (SW) was performed. And field mixing method was suggested.

Bearing Capacity of Driven H-Piles in Embankment (성토지반에 타입된 H형강 말뚝의 지지거동)

  • To find axial and lateral responses of impact-driven H piles in embankment(SM), the H piles are instrumented with electric strain gages, dynamic load test is performed during driving, and then the damage of strain gages is checked simultaneously. Axially and laterally static load tests are performed on the same piles after one to nine days as well. Then load-settlement behavior is measured. Furthermore, to find the set-up effect in H pile, No. 4, 16, 26, and R6 piles are restriked about 1, 2, and 14 days after driving. As results, ram height and pile capacity obtained from impact driving control method become 80cm and 210.3∼242.3ton, respectively. At 15 days after driving, allowable bearing capacity by CAPWAP analysis, which 2.5 of the factor of safety is applied for ultimate bearing capacity, increases 10.8%. Ultimate bearing capacity obtained from axially static load test is 306∼338ton. This capacity is 68.5∼75.7% at yield force of pile material and is 4∼4.5 times of design load. Allowable bearing capacity using 2 of the factor of safety is 153∼169ton. Initial stiffness response of the pile is 27.5ton/mm. As the lateral load increases, the horizontal load-settlement behaves linearly to which the lateral load reaches up to 17ton. This reason is filled with sand in the cavity formed between flange and web during pile driving. As the result of reading with electric strain gages, flange material of pile is yielded at 19ton in horizontal load. Thus allowable load of this pile material is 9.5ton when the factor of safety is 2.0. Allowable lateral displacement of this pile corresponding to this load is 23∼36mm in embankment.

A Study on the Chemical Weathering Characteristics of the Weathered Granite Residual Soils prone to Laterization (적황색토화된 화강암질 풍화잔적토의 화학적 풍화특성에 관한 연구)

  • The definition of laterite or lateritic soils is discussed on a climatic condition of tropical and semitropical regions, and the weathering index is indicated by the chemical composition. The chemical composition of$(Fe_2O_3+Al_2O_3)$ of the weathered granite residual soils in tropical and the temperate regions which shelus laterization usually ranges from 0.2 to 0.5. This study shows that the chemical ratio of the Chonju Ajung site is about 0.2U, and that of the regions along the shore of the western sea of Hongsong and Taechon is about 0.33. The chemical ratio of the non-laterite is less than 0.2, and the Kyougju Pulguksa site confirmed about 0.17, The X-Ray diffraction test shows that the clay mineral of the laterite soils is made of kaolinite, this X -Ray result indicates the same characteristics compared with the wrathered granite residual soils of other sites.

  • Landslides is mainly induced by a heavy rainfall, earthquake ground motion, and some other factors like soil mechanics, morphological-geological factors etc. Since the starting point of the failure seemed to be originated at a construction site in the study, it is meaningful to find out the relationship between the landslide and the construction. For this study, the slope failure factor was examined carefully to see that the original natural slope had vulnerability and that the complex ground had unstability changed by construction. A field survey was conducted on the original ground surface and filled-up ground. A laboratory test was also conducted to determine the geomechanical properties of soil samples. 2D and 3D limit equilibrium analysis with changing groundwater level were conducted at the failure depth using a seismic refraction survey. The result shows that the factor of safety is similar stability under all condition, but unstable under saturated condition.

A Study on the Utilization of Coal Ash as Earthwork Materials (석탄회의 토공재로서의 활용에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the possibility of the utilization of coal ash as earthwork materials is investigated. For this purpose, some laboratory experiments were carried out. The samples used in these tests are fly ash(FA), bottom ash(BA), coal ash dropped into ash pond(FA:BA=8:2), and mixed coal ash(FA:BA=5:5), which were discharged as a by-product at Yong-Yeul thermoelectric power plant, and general road filling materials. And for the deformation analysis of coal ash reclamation ground, several hyperbolic model parameters were determined by triaxial compression test. As a result of this study, coal ash has excellent engineering properties such as strength parameters comparing with general soils of the same grain size, especially in case of being used as backfill materials and reclamation materials on soft ground, and coal ash is superior to general earthwork materials in engineering properties becasuse of self hardening behaveiour, light weight property, etc.

  • Although the discharge capacity of the natural fiber drains are very low compared to that of plastic drain board (PDB), it is found that the conventional fiber drains and the new developed straw drain boards have great potential for use as a substitute for conventional plastic drain boards through several model tests. To verify their field application, a pilot test using environmentally friendly drains is also being carried out to prove their effective discharge capacity in the field. The pilot test site was divided into 5 different areas, with various combinations of vertical and horizontal drains installed for evaluation. Definite characteristics of various drains are still to be found due to the delay in construction of embankment. Consolidation behavior of three types of vertical drains and two types of horizontal drains will be analyzed after the completion of the embankment in the near future.
