Behaviour of Embankment using Bottom Ash-Tire Shred Mixture (저회(Bottom Ash)와 폐타이어를 활용한 성토구조물 거동에 관한 연구)

  • Based on the proven feasibility of bottom ash and tire shred-soil mixtures as lightweight fill materials, tire shred-bottom ash mixtures were suggested as a new lightweight fill material to replace the conventional construction material (soil) with bottom ash. Therefore, we carried out the field compaction test and performance test of large scale embankment in order to evaluate their suitability for the use of lightweight fill materials. In these tests, we could assess the settlement, earth pressure, stress-strain relation, vibration of large scale embankment which were made with tire shred-bottom ash mixture and the conventional fill material(weathered soil) respectively. The earthpressure and vibration transmission was decreased and the settlement behaviour of the 2 materials (tire shred mixture and weathered soil) was measured similarly under static/cyclic loading condition.

The Engineering and Environmental Properties for Utilization of Phosphogypsum as Embankment Materials (성토재료로서 인산석고의 공학적.환경적 특성)

  • 인산석고(phosphogypsum)는 비료생산과정에서 발생되는 산업부산물로, 주요구성성분은 이수석고(CaSO$_4$.2$H_2O$)의 성분이 대부분이고 여기에 인(P$_2$O$_2$), 철(F)와 유기물질 등으로 이루어져 있다. 전 세계적으로 인산석고 발생량은 현재 1억8천만톤이고 향후 약 3억8천만톤 발생될 것으로 추정되며, 국내에는 약 157만톤이 발생되고 있다. 본 연구는 성토재료로 인산석고를 활용할 경우 이에 대한 물리적 환경적 특성을 분석하였다. 이를 위하여 인산석고와 화강토 혼합비율에 따른 입도분석, 비중시험, 다짐시험, CBR시험, pH시험 및 용출시험 등 일련의 실험을 실시하였다. 실험결과, 인산석고 혼합재료를 성토재료로 활용할 경우 환경적으로 유해한 영향이 적으며, 산업부산물의 자원화 차원에서 대체 성토재료로 활용이 가능한 것으로 나타났다.

A Study on Filter Performance of Materials in Embankment Slope during Heavy Rain (강우시 성토사면 재료의 필터조건검토에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents the characteristics of internal erosion of embankment slopes due to the localized heavy rain. In this study, the existing analysis methods of filter performance in embankment materials were reviewed. Based on the theoretical concept of filter conditions to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials, new analysis method was suggested. According to the new analysis method for filter performance, experimental programs were carried out to investigate the filter performance for controlling and sealing any leak which develops through the embankment materials as a result of internal erosion. Three sets of small scale laboratory tests were carried out with changing the main influence factors such as rainfall intensity, gradient of slope, embankment material condition. It was found that the new analysis method for filter performance to prevent particles from being carried in from the adjacent embankment materials was more capable approach to design the filter materials in embankment slopes. The new criterion or method for satisfactory filter performance, therefore, was recommended.

Field Tests for the Application of Bottom Ash and Shred Tire as Fill Materials (석탄회 및 폐타이어의 성토재로의 적용성 검토를 위한 현장시험)

  • In this study, we constructed the test embankment with four kinds of sections(2 kinds of bottom ash; tire shred-bottom ash mixture, weathered soil) in field and had been monitoring the behaviour of the test embankment and change of ground water quality for 1 year. In the geotechnical aspects, there was no relative difference of deformation in 4 test materials section and we could not see the possibility of the strength-reduction of coal ash materials by freezing inside of the embankment. In addition, no settlement was observed in the test sections because the base soil of the test sections was rigid enough that no consolidation was occurred. In the examination of water quality, all of the heavy metals and negative ions were detected below the drinking water standards except for sulfate($SO_4^{2-}$). In the beginning of measurement, higher concentrations of sulfate from 4 test sections were detected than drinking water standard for 20 days after beginning of the test but the concentrations decreased below the drinking water standard after 50 days after the tests.

Assessing Distribution of Degree of Saturation for Track Transition Zone Using Soil Water Characteristic Curve (접속부 궤도 성토재료의 함수특성곡선을 이용한 포화도 분포 산정)

  • The number of occurrence of differential settlement and track irregularity at track transition zone recently comes to increase, which leads to frequent maintenance activities that have an impact on train operation. Such track transition zone damages are attributed to the change of mechanical properties of fill materials due to environmental factors such as rainfall and freeze, and thaw. Consequently, this study attempts to establish the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) of fill materials, and conduct seepage analysis to assess the distribution of degree of saturation (DOS) for track transition zone in case of rainfall. The SWCC of fill materials was successfully obtained using filter paper test method. The results of seepage analysis revealed that rainfall intensity, the slope of backfill, backfill condition (fill or cut), and SWCC are significantly influential in controlling the distribution of DOS.

The Influence of Soil Content on the Settlement Behavior of Gravel Embankement (토사 함량에 따른 자갈 성토재료의 침하특성 분석)

  • In this study, we analyzed the settlement characteristics of rockfill embankments mixed with soil by confirming the physical properties of soil materials mixed with silty materials and analyzing the compression characteristics of gravel materials according to the mixing ratio of soil materials. For this, we mixed silty materials into sandy soil to analyze the compression characteristics of soil materials, and we constructed a foundation by mixing various ratios of soil into rockfill materials with a particle distribution similar to that of river gravel, and conducted a one-dimensional compression experiment using a medium-sized chamber. As a result of the experiment, in the case of mixed soil materials, the Transition Fine Content (TFC) appeared in the range of 21~26% depending on the load condition, and in the case of rockfill materials mixed with soil, as the void filling ratio of soil in gravel samples increases, both total compression and creep compression decreases, but after a 50% mixing ratio, the settlement of amount increases again.

  • A new RI calibration curve acquired from the laboratory tests on typical embankment materials is found to be adequate for testing subgrade materials in Korea but may not be suitable for testing materials containing gravels. Therefore this study aims for the modification of RI values that enables the usage of RI to all kinds of roadbed materials. Also other factors available for the criteria of compaction control such as air void ratio and degree of saturation were reviewed for their applicability.

Experimental Study on Reinforcement Effect of Geosynthetics for Surplus Soil, an Unsuitable Fill Material (성토재료로 부적합한 현장 발생토의 토목섬유 보강효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Surplus soil is commonly used at construction sites, because suitable fill material is not always immediately available and leads to additional costs. However, most surplus soils do not meet the requirement of suitable fill material to achieve the stability and strength of embankments. In this study, Proctor compaction tests and field compaction tests were performed by installing geosynthetics to resolve the problems caused by compacting unsuitable soils. Compaction energy and the number of geosynthetics were changed under the type A- and D- and type A Proctor compaction tests (KS F 2312), respectively. The field compaction testing using geosynthetics was performed on surplus soils of high water content. Optimum water content and maximum dry density of compacted soil decreased and increased by reinforcing geosynthetics, respectively. Compaction curves behaved with geosynthetics as the compaction curves behaved with higher compaction energy. Efficient compaction was possible because the compaction energy increased to 2.10 and 2.71 times the compaction energy required to achieve the same maximum dry density with one and two geosynthetic layer(s), respectively. Furthermore, field compaction tests verified that efficient compaction was possible because the dry density of unsuitable surplus soils of high water content was increased by reinforcing geosynthetics.

An Experimental Study on Bottom Ash for Utilization of Subbase Materials (저회의 성토재료 활용성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Recently, many researches on bottom ash which is produced in the burning process of power plant are actively performed for its utilization for soil-subbase materials. In this paper, bottom ashes from 5 different power plants are prepared and several tests including compaction, CBR, and tri-axial compression are carried out for mixed bottom ash and weathered soil considering 3 replacement ratio of 30%, 50%, and 70%. Through the tests, CBR result over 20 are evaluated without plastic property, which shows availability of subbase material. With higher increase in replacement ratio of bottom ash, CBR of mixed soil increases due to the higher mechanical performance of bottom ash. However, replacement effects of bottom ash on friction angle and cohesion are evaluated to be little since bottom ash plays a little role in rearrangement of mixed soil. Bottom ash with a good mechanical property is evaluated to have reasonable bearing capacity which shows a good property for subbase materials.

A Study on the Basic and Compression Characteristics of Lightweight Waste for Use as Fill Materials (성토재 적용을 위한 경량폐기물의 기본물성 및 압축특성 연구)

  • This is a fundamental research on use as fill material of lightweight waste such as bottom ash and tire shred. We carried out the test for particle size distribution, specific gravity, density, shear strength, permeability and vertical compression settlement, considering water content change and temperature effect of several waste materials. Bottom ash, which is lighter than soils, has similar permeability and particle size distribution to those of weathered soils. But permeability may differ depending on the particle size distribution. The shear strength aspect of bottom ash and tire shred mixed materials are similar to that of natural fill materials. In the 1-D vertical compression settlement test, we could be assured that bottom ash and tire shred mixed materials showed similar compression settlement to that of sand under actual vertical stress. Furthermore, materials including bottom ash showed smaller compression settlement than that of weathered soils in the long-term settlement test under wetting and freezing-thawing condition.
