  • To establish effectively for isolation and cultivation and cultivation of scuticociliata, we tried to culture scuticociliata using culture medium(P2Y1-DW medium). The number of scuticociliata reached $1.50{\times}10^3$ cells/ml at the temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ in 3 days, but $1.03{\times}10^2$ cells/ml at $15^{\circ}C$. In P1Y1-S medium growth reached $2.6{\times}10^4$cells/ml in 3 days, but the number in DW medium was the lowest with $2.0{\times}10^2$cells/ml. In all these media, the number decreased after 5 days. As the method of the parasite`s division, after attaching the anterior part of the body, its shape gradualy changed to a western pear-like appearance. The parasite completely divided into two cells, then freely swam and became an adult cell, size of $40{\mu}m$ in size within about 3 hours from attaching.

  • An imported case of rectal hookworm infection was diagnosed by stool examination and recovery of adult worms from the rectal mucosa by sigmoidoscopy. The chief complaints of a patient were diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss for about 1 month after returning from his travel abroad to the Southeast Asia. Leukocytosis ($16, 750/{\mu}\ell$) and peripheral eosinophilia (33.7%) were noticed without anemia. Typical hookworm eggs were detected by stool examination, and 3 worms were collected by sigmoidoscopy from rectal mucosa of this patient. Those worms were confirmed as adult worms of Ancylostoma duodenale(♂:1, ♀: 2) based on their morphological characteristics. The symptoms were relieved after treatment with anthelmintics. This case was considered as one of the imported parasitic infections in Korea, and a rare case of hookworm infection on human rectal mucosa.

  • Metaceriae of Parvatrema timondavidi (Digenea; Grmnophallidae) were found from Tapes phillippinarum, one of the most common marine clams in Korean. T. were philippinarum was collected from a fishery market in seoul, and all of the clams eximined were found to contain many gymnophyallid metacercariae. To get adult worms, 10 ICR mice were fed with 100 metacercariae each and sacrificed by cervical dislocation at 7, 10 and 14 mice were morphologically characterized by oval body shape, lage oral sucker with lateral located genital pore from the venttral sucker. Based on these characters they identified as P.timondawvidi Bartoli, 1964. this study first confirms the presence of P. timondawcidi metacercartae in T.philippinarum in Korea.

  • Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887) female specimens were subjected to scanning electron microscopy for the observation of surface fine structures. Morphological characteristics observed were summarized as follows: 1. The palpi were wider than long, and compressed, ridged dorsally and laterally. There were usually four pairs of ventro-internal setae on the articles. 2. The hypostome dentition was usually 4/4 but occasionally 5/5. 3. The basis capituli were hexagonal dorsally and the porose area was distinct with the holes developed well. 4. There were numerous folds resembling finger prints around the female genital pore. 5. A pair of anal lobes with specified setae on them was also rocognized as one of the morphological characteristics.

  • The tea red spider mite has recently outbroken as the major pest of tea at tea plantation area in southern part of Korea. This study was carried out to investigate some development of the tea red spider mite. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The body length and width of adult female and male were 0.40mm and 0.22mm, and 0.31mm and 0.20mm, respectively. 2. Durations of immature stage of females were 24.8 days at $16^{\circ}C$, 17.0 days at $20^{\circ}C$, 11.0 days at $24^{\circ}C$, 8.2 days at $28^{\circ}C$, and 6.7 days at $32^{\circ}C$. 3. The average longevities of female of the tea red spider mite were 31.5 days at $16^{\circ}C$, 13.4 days at $20^{\circ}C$, 8.4 days at $24^{\circ}C$, 7.8 days at $28^{\circ}C$, and 5.8 days at $32^{\circ}C$.

  • The adults of Hermetia illucens collected in Korea were about the same size as those from their origin. The body part with the largest size variation was the antenna 2 followed by the head width and the abdomen width. It can be the baseline of selection of superior individuals for organic waste decomposition and compost production. In regards to the habitat, the adult Hermetia illucens were collected from 22 of the 51 localities. Although geographical characteristics such as coordinates and altitude may not affect the insects, the presence of organic matters could affect them. The distribution pattern of the insects may act as an indicator of natural recycling of organic wastes.

  • Physiological and morphological differences in larvae and female adults of Thecodiplosis Japonensis from Haenam, Chullanamdo, and Chunsung, Kangweondo, were studied by means of electrophoretic technique and scanning electron microscope (SEM). On zymograms of whole body, third instar larvae of T. japonensis showed geographic differences in the band patterns of esterase and MDH iszymes, but patterns and the staining density of general proteins were similar in tow populations. In female adults, the populations revealed geographic differences in general proteins and esterase isozymens. In external ultrastructures, especially in genital segments, each population had distinctive structures in the 2nd segment of ovipositor.

  • The genus Ippa Walker, 1864 is reported for the first time from Korea, with a species I. conspersa (Matsumura, 1931). I. conspersa is generally known as myrmecophiles having ecological relationships with some ant species such as Lasius spp. Photographs of adults, immature stages, and the genitalia of I. conspersa are provided.
