  • The aims of this study was to elucidate the correlation between cotyledon numbers and seedling growth and some other traits of Pinus koraiensis. The results are summurized as follows; 1. A highly significant correlations between numbers of coty ledons and juvenile needles was found but no significances between cotyledon numbers and juvenile needle length, width and stomata row numbers. 2. The accessory resin canals did not begin to appear before June but began to appear only small numbers of seedling after July. It was observed that the number of accessory resin canals of juvenile leaves at various growing stages were not related with the number of cotyledons. 3. In the case of adult leaves, there was a significant difference in the number of leaves and the number of cotyledons, but no significant difference between the number of cotyledons and needle length, needle width and stomata row. 4. There were significant differences in the number of cotyledons and top height growth, and root caliper growth among individuals and due to ages. 5. Seedlings with more than 12 cotyledons showed better growth than those with 9 to 11 cotyledons.

  • The zonula occludens (ZO) protein serves as a scaffolding protein, providing structural support at the junctions between cells and the cytoplasmic surface. It acts as a bridge between integral membrane proteins and the cytoskeleton. Besides its structural role, it also participates in regulating cell growth and proliferation. Recent studies have highlighted the involvement of ZO protein in various diseases, including cancer. Specifically, research has indicated that ZO protein influences the cancer microenvironment surrounding cancer cells, thereby facilitating their growth and development. ZO proteins exert diverse functions in the cancer microenvironment, impacting processes such as angiogenesis, inflammatory responses, the epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and interactions with mesenchymal stem cells. The specific mechanisms vary depending on the type of cancer and environmental conditions. Recent research unveiled several signaling pathways involving ZO protein, which could potentially impede cancer progression in the tumor microenvironment. Consequently, these insights open avenues for novel treatment strategies. While the numerous physiological, structural, and morphological roles of ZO protein have been observed at the cellular and in vivo levels, understanding the signaling mechanisms it operates in vivo and how these mechanisms influence the cancer microenvironment remains a challenge. In this review, we delineate the characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of ZO protein in the context of the cancer microenvironment. Additionally, we propose leveraging the properties of ZO protein to devise defense mechanisms within the cancer cell environment and provide an overview of its in vivo role.

  • Many studies have reported that mealworms can ingest plastic during their larval stage. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of expanded polystyrene consumption on the growth and development of mealworms during their larval stage. We found that the growth rate is significantly different between mealworms consumed wheat bran and mealworms consumed expanded polystyrene (p < 0.001). The transformation into pupa occurred faster among the mealworms consumed expanded polystyrene than those consumed wheat bran (p < 0.001). However, the survival rate was not significantly different between the two groups of mealworms (p = 0.786). Based on the data, we conclude that mealworms consuming expanded polystyrene have a slower weight gain and a shorter development period than mealworms consuming wheat bran, but the expanded polystyrene does not affect the survival rate before the transformation into pupa. Practically, we anticipate that mealworms can be a resource for the sustainable and eco-friendly removal of expanded polystyrene waste.

  • We aimed to investigate the age-dependent development of digestive organs, intestinal enzymes, and hepatic antioxidant defense system in White Leghorn chicks aged 0, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. Body weight (BW) did not significantly change between days 0 and 7 but significantly increased (P<0.05) after day 7. The relative liver weight (g/100 g of BW) was significantly lower at day 0 than at the other ages but markedly increased at days 3 and 7 (P<0.05). The relative pancreatic weight changed similar to the change in liver weight, with the maximum development at 7 days (P<0.05). The relative intestinal and mucosal tissue weights increased rapidly after hatching (P<0.05), with the maximum growth at 7 days. Furthermore, maltase and sucrase activities were significantly higher at day 3 than at day 0 (P<0.05). Leucine aminopeptidase activity was high at day 0 and remained constant as age increased. Superoxide dismutase and glutathione S-transferase activities in the liver were the lowest at day 0 but significantly increased after 7 days (P<0.05). Glutathione peroxidase activity increased significantly after day 14 compared with that at days 0 and 7 (P<0.05). Lipid peroxidation was not affected by age. In conclusion, the digestive organ weights and hydrolase activity of chicks increased rapidly during the first 3 or 7 days post-hatching. Hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity increased simultaneously with the increase in digestive organ weights, after 7 days.

  • Medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase (MCAD) deficiency is the most common mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation disorder which is inherited as an autosomal recessive pattern. MCAD deficiency is caused by mutations in the ACADM gene; medium-chain acyl-CoA dehydrogenase gene (ACADM; OMIM 607008) on chromosome 1p31 which encodes MCAD, the mitochondrial enzyme which catalyzes the first reaction in beta-oxidation of fatty acids with medium-chain length. Here, we describe one Korean pediatric case of MCAD deficiency, which was diagnosed during newborn screening by tandem mass spectrometry and confirmed by molecular analysis. The level of hexanoyl (C6), octanoyl (C8), decenoyl (C10:1) carnitine, and C8/C2 ratio was elevated. Homogenous c.1189T>A (p.Tyr397Asn) mutation of ACADM gene was identified by direct sequencing. He has been asymptomatic and has shown normal growth and development by 25 months of age without any intervention. There was no episode of metabolic acidosis during follow-up period.

  • Light is one of the most important environmental factors controlling plant physiology. The human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (hGM-CSF) was produced from cell suspension cultures of transgenic tobacco under different light conditions (24 hr light, 18 hr light/dark cycle, dark). Under 24 hr light condition, cell growth was best and dry cell weight reached 14.4 g/L. Light did not influenced the secretion of total proteins. However, in the dark condition, the ratio of secreted total protein/dry cell weight was 1.5 fold higher than those of ethel conditions. Production of hGM-CSF was highest with 18 hr light condition and reached 496.5 ug/L. In addition, the content of hGM-CSf in secreted total proteins was 1.8 fold higher than that of 24 hr light condition, which is beneficial for the purificationof the protein.
