The Quaternary coarse-grained sandy sediments are distributed along the channels of Seomjin River. The fluvial sediments were sedimentologically studied in horizontal and vertical distributions. To analyze depositional environments and facies changes in the sediments, sediment sampling from river mouth to upper stream and desctriptive approaches to the sediment profiles outcropped near Kurye were carried out. The sediments along the stream lines of the river are assigned to very coarse to coarse sand in grain size. The sediment grains are widely scattered in sorting and moderately sorted in average. For skewness and kurtosis, the sediments ranges from very fine to very coarse skewed and from very lepto-kurtic to extremelyl epto-kurtic states, respectively. The sediments are divided into slightly gravelly sand, gravelly sand and sandy gravel in sediment type. The pain shape in the sandy sediments are dominant in equant and tabular forms showing wide varieties. The sandy sediments are mostly poorly sorted and are highly variable in surface texture with SEM. Some smaller grains in the sediments ordinarily show polished surfaces. Of those grains, quartz ones are commonly angular to surounded. On the basis of facies changes and sedimentary structures, outcropped fluvial sediment profiles in Kurye are classified into xGyS, mGyS, gGyS, xSM, xS, mS, mGyM, IgM in facies. These eight facies are reformed as facies assemblage I and ll. The facies assemblage I and II are interpreted as the products of the channel deposits in braided stream and flood plain ones besides channels, respectively. The change facies assemblage I with facies assemblage ll imply that depositional environments hadbeen migrated from braied sream to flood plain ones.
The concentration and size analysis of in-situ suspended particulate material were measured using an optical instrument, LISST-100, in the bottom layer at the three inlets of the Seomjin River Estuary, mouth of Gwangyang bay, and Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge. In the Seomjin river estuary and mouth of Gwangyang bay-side of the Namhae Bridge, the in-situ mean grain size of the suspended material changed from a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at a coarse fraction to a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at the finer particles. Seomjin River. The interactions between suspended particulate concentration and beam attenuation coefficient of suspended particulate matters depended on the supply of finer and coarser particles in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay and Seomjin River. So, interactions reflected difference of the concentration, mean size and sorting of suspended particulate matters. The difference of interaction showed dynamic behaviors to the resuspension and deflocculation processes increased river discharge. This showed that it may be possible to use the interactions between the suspended particle concentration and beam attenuation coefficient to monitor the temporal and spatial distributions of in-situ particles.

The study of Mobile MGIS (Marine Geographic Information System) based on the Android Mobile Platform is mainly performed on effective methodologies which transform real world data to computing world data. Mobile GUI system has its own target on reliable data service by acquisition of geometric information using EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code) Model, accurate measurement and graphical visualization. Even simple visualizations can aid in the interpretation of complex hydrodynamic relationships that are frequently encountered in the marine environment. The Mobile MGIS provides an easy way for hydrodynamics geoscientists to construct complex visualizations that can be viewed with free software. This study proposes a Mobile GUI MGIS using EFDC Model result of Seomjin River estuary. Finally, we design a Seomjin River estuarine Coastal Waters Mobile MGIS integrating above data models. It must adds more ecological information and the various service item for approach more easily in order to user.
The ultrastructures of germinal cells of male marsh clam, Corbicujar lena were studied. The mature sperm was primitive type, consisting of head, middle piece and tail. The mature sperm was whip-shaped and its head was divided into two parts; the acrosomal part shaped long hollow cone about $3{\mu}m$ in length and the sperm nuclear part shaped a long stick about $9\;{\mu}m$ in length. The posterior part of the sperm nuclear projected to centriole, The middle piece of the sperm-nuclear had four mitochondria and two centrioles. The sperm tail part had the 9+2 microtubular arrangement known as a typical pattern, During spermiogenesis, chromatin within sperm nuclear became fiberic materials by condensation.
During period of the rainy season of spring tide Aug. 2005, the suspended sediment transport rate from Seomjin River increased ten times as high as neap tide of low river discharge. During ebb tide of high terrestrial input, the grain size of suspended particles of both surface and bottom layer of the water column, showed a uni-modal distribution with a dominant peak at coarse fraction, which suggests a characteristic development of floc-sized particles of low mean effective density. On the contrary, the particles supplied toward upstream of Seomjin river from Gwangyang Bay during flood tide showed a bi-modal distribution with a secondary peak at finer fraction, possibly due to the resuspension and the deflocculation associated with the increased shear velocity at near bottom. Break-up of large flocs is also suggested by the increased mean effective density. However, settling velocity was lower during flood tide because of smaller grain size. Thus, net deposition of suspended sediment is expected at within Gwangyang Bay instead of upstream of Seomjin River, even though suspended sediment transport rate at near bottom water was three times higher than that at surface water during flood tide.
Estuary is a transitional zone between river and ocean environment that receives the maritime and riverine influence simultaneously. Estuaries are the most productive habitats because their incoming water provides large quantities of nutrients. The Seomjin River estuary, located in the middle south of Korea, has no barrage and shows natural characteristic of estuary. However, due to dredging and reclamation the environment of the estuary has been changed significantly in the river mouth. In addition, increased freshwater intake in midstream of the Seomjin River results in salinity intrusion. In this paper salinity variation in downstream estuary of the Seomjin River has been simulated and tested using EFDC model. The results of simulation were compared with measured data collected at three points, Culture & Art Center, Sumjin Iron Bridge, and Mokdori, located at 9Km, 14Km, and 15.5Km respectively from downstream estuary. Based on the simulated results, the contribution of the flushing discharge has been evaluated in preventing the salinity intrusion by increasing the discharge flowrates released from the Juam dam.
In situ particle size and volume concentration of suspended sediment was measured at the mouth of Seomjin River Estuary In February 2001, using an optical instrument, 'LISST-100'. Time variation of in situ particle size and concentration shows: (1) during ebb tide, Seomjin River supplies relatively fine-grained particles with less-fluctuated, compared to during flood tide, and well-behaved concentrations following the tidal cycle; and (2) during flood tide, relatively coarse-grained particles with highly variable in size distribution and concentration flow upstream from Kwangyang Bay. This explains a poor correlation $(r^{2}=0.10)$ between sediment concentration and beam attenuation coefficient during flood and a high degree of correlation $(r^{2}=0.80)$ during ebb tide. Relatively fine grained and well defined, monotonous size distribution may promote the correlation between concentration and beam attenuation coefficient due to optical homogeneity of particles during ebb tide. Abundance of large aggregates with time-varying size and shape distributions may be mainly responsible for variations in optical properties of the sediment during flood tide, and thus may confound the relationship between the two variables. The difference in particle sizes and shapes between flood and ebb tides can also be observed on SEM images.

Salinity, DIN, DIP, DIN/DIP and indigenous algal assay were determined to estimate the limiting nutrient for phytoplankton growth in Gwangyang Bay, South Sea of Korea. Seawater samples were collected at surface and bot-tom water in 4 November 1999 (dry season) and 2 September 2000 (after heavy rain). In 4 November 1999, the salinity, DIN, DIP and DIN/DIP were 29.92 psu, 13.59 ${\mu}M$, 3.41 ${\mu}M$ and 4.14 respectively. In 2 September 2000, These values were 24.62 psu, 27.77 ${\mu}M$, 2.82 ${\mu}M$ and 9.79 respectively. The DIN and DIP concentrations in this study were higher than Deukryang, Yeoja and Gamak Bay, South Sea of Korea. Especially, DIP concentration was 8 times high compared to Deutryang, Yeoja and Gamak Bay. The main sources of nitrogen seem to be freshwater runoff from Somjin River and industrial wastewater. But, the main sources of phosphorus seem to be industrial wastewater around Gwangyang Bay. The limiting nutrient was nitrogen at all station in 4 November 1999. The limiting nutrient was also nitrogen in 2 September 2000 in spite of heavy rain observed because of relatively much volume of phosphorus sup-plied from point sources than nitrogen. In case of below 20 psu in salinity by heavy rain, the limiting nutrient willbe shift from nitrogen to phosphorus at some area of Somjin River estuary. But the limiting nutrient will be never shift to phosphorus throughout Gwangyang Bay, eastern coast of Yeoja and Dolsan because of much volume of phosphorus runoff from point source in coastal area of Gwangyang Bay.

The seasonal variation in species composition and abundance distribution of zooplankton was studied in the Seomjin river estuary along the salinity gradients. In this estuary, marine taxa predominated in all seasons and very limited number of freshwater species appeared. The total abundances showed a seasonal fluctuation. The highest total abundance appeared in spring with over 3,000 individuals/m$^3$. In summer, the high abundance was sustained although it decreased a little. The abundance was minimal in fall with about 500 individuals/m$^3$. When the study area was divided into three salinity regimes, oligohaline (salinity less than 5 psu), mesohaline (5${\sim}$18 psu), and polyhaline zone (over 18 psu), the zone of high abundance as well as the composition of zooplankton community in each salinity regime changed seasonally. In fall, marine copepods predominated in oligohaline zone while marine species other than crustaceans dominated in polyhaline zone. However, in winter copepods predominated in all area. In spring and summer, holozoic dinoflagellate Noctiluca scintillans dominated in higher salinity regimes. We listed major copepod species of each salinity regime for each season with the ranges of water temperatures (T) and salinities (S) of their occurrence. T, S's of maximum abundances of those major copepod species were also reported. The observed very wide tolerance ranges of major copepod species for salinity suggested that the concept of 'indicator species' should be used in quantitative context rather than qualitative.
Rivers continuously transport terrestrial organic carbon matter to the estuary and the ocean, and they play a critical role in productivity and biodiversity in the marine ecosystem as well as the global carbon cycle. The amount of terrestrial organic carbon transporting from the rivers to ocean is an essential piece of information, not only for the marine ecosystem management but also the carbon budget within catchment. However, this phenomenon is still not well understood. Most large rivers in Korea have a well-established national monitoring system of the river flow and the TOC (Total Organic Carbon) concentration from the mountain to the river mouth, which are fundamental for estimating the amount of the TOC flux. We estimated the flux of the total terrestrial organic carbon of five large rivers which flow out to the Yellow Sea, using the data of the national monitoring system (the monthly mean TOC concentration and the monthly runoff of river flow). We quantified the annual TOC flux of the five rivers, showing their results in the following order: the Han River ($18.0{\times}10^9gC\;yr^{-1}$)>>Geum River ($5.9{\times}10^9gC\;yr^{-1}$)>Yeongsan River ($2.6{\times}10^9gC\;yr^{-1}$)>Sumjin River ($2.0{\times}10^9gC\;yr^{-1}$)>>Tamjin River ($0.2{\times}10^9gC\;yr^{-1}$). The amount of the Han River, which is the highest in the Korean rivers, corresponds to be 4% of the annual total TOC flux of in the Yellow River, and moreover, to be 0.6% of Yangtze River.
