  • Fiber mats were made at five density levels, using fibers from kraft pulp screening rejects, rice straw and a 50/50 mixture of the two. They were soaked in the sulfur compounds. Specimens cut from the composite panels were tested in flexure at time intervals for one year to study the effect of aging. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) were determined. Under optimum conditions of fiber mat preparation and saturation with molten sulfur and modified sulfur, composites were produced which exhibited mechanical properties comparable to conventional fiberglass in some properties and superior to conventional wood-based composition boards, For example. the moduli of elasticity of the reinforced composites made from pulp screening rejects, with a density of 0.35 gm/$cm^3$, were greater than 1,000,000 psi as compared 800.000 psi for high-density hardboard (1.28 gm/$cm^3$). Modulus of rupture of the best reinforced composites was about 7,000 psi, comparable to 6,000 psi of high-density hardboard.

  • This study was carried out to compare the characteristics of low density fiberboards (LDFs) manufactured with different adhesive types such as melamine urea formaldehyde (MUF), phenol formalehyde (PF), emulsified MDI (eMDI) and latexes resins. As results, hard LDFs were successfully manufactured by MUF, PF and eMDI resins. Thermal conductivities of all LDFs were significantly lower than commercial medium density fiberboard. Especially, all LDFs showed comparable thermal insulation performance with extruded polystyrene foam (XPS). LDF manufactured with eMDI resins showed the highest physical properties such as thickness/length swelling by water absorption and bending strength.

Combustive Properties of Medium Density Fibreboards (MDF) Treated with Bis-(Dimethylaminomethyl) Phosphinic Acid and Alkylenediaminoalkyl-Bis-Phosphonic Acids (비스-디메틸아미노메틸 포스핀산과 알킬렌디아미노알킬-비스-포스폰산 유도체에 의해 처리된 중밀도 섬유판의 연소특성)

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Medium Density Fibreboards (MDFs) treated with chemicals of the bis-(dimethylaminomethyl) phosphinic acid (DMDAP), N,N-dimethylethylenediaminomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (DMDEDAP), piperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (PIPEABP), and methylpiperazinomethyl-bis-phosphonic acid (MPIPEABP). MDFs were painted in three times with 15 wt% solution of the bis-(dimethylaminomethyl) phosphinic acid and alkylenediaminoalkyl-bis-phosphonic acids at the room temperature, respectively. After drying MDF treated with chemicals, combustive properties and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) contents were examined by the cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1), test for flame retardant (NEMA Notice No. 2012034), and gas chromatography (KS M ISO 11890-2), respectively. It was indicated that the MDFs treated with chemicals showed the longer time to combustion time (CT) = (442~492) s than that of virgin plate by reducing the burning rate except for CT treated with DMDAP. In adition, the MDFs treated with chemicals showed both of the higher char area (44.33~61.33) kg/kg and char length (10.33~11.67) cm than those of virgin plate. Especially, the MDFs treated with chemicals showed the higher mean volatile organic compounds (VOCs) (0.188~0.333) g/L than that of virgin plate within the prescribed limits. Thus, It is supposed that the combustion- retardation properties were improved by the partial due to the treated chemicals in the virgin MDF.

  • 음향방출 신호를 이용하여 목재 섬유판(fiberboards)의 위치표정의 유용성 유무를 실험적으로 검증하였다 위치표정의 정확도를 향상하기 위해 신호처리 방법중의 하나인 웨이블릿 변환 디노이징 기법을 활용하여 저주파수인 대칭모드(굽힘파)를 활용하고, 고주파수인 비대칭모드(팽창파)를 제거하여 신호를 재구성함으로써 섬유관의 위치표정시 문턱값 통과방법을 사용할 때 발생하는 도달시간차를 최소화 할 수 있음을 확인하였다. 디노이징 기법을 활용한 섬유판의 위치 표정과 굽힘강도에 대한 사상총수를 기초로 하여 목재 구조물 및 문화재의 건전성을 평가 할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

An Experimental Study on the Flexural Behavior of RC Beams Strengthened with Near-Surface-Mounted CFRP Strips (표면매입 탄소섬유판으로 보강된 철근콘크리트 부재의 휨 거동에 관한 실험연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the flexural strengthening effectiveness for the beams reinforced with NSM CFRP strips. To accomplish this objective, concrete T beams were made and tested. From this study, it is found that the flexural stiffness and strength of the beams reinforced with NSM strips were significantly improved compared to the beams without CFRP strip. The maximum increase of flexural strength was 247%. Failure of the beam reinforced with NSM was initiated by a part of separation of NSM strips along the longitudinal direction, and the second failure of strips was investigated. After the first rupture of the NSM strips, the load dropped suddenly and the second rupture was succeeded. This result shows that a perfect composite reaction with NSM strips and concrete is possible in the beam reinforced with NSM CFRP strips the NSM strips and Near surface mounted(NSM) is one of the most recent and promising strengthening techniques for reinforced concrete structures.

Acoustic Emission Characteristics during fracture Process of Glass Fiber/Aluminum Hybrid Laminates (유리섬유/알루미늄 혼합 적층판의 파괴과정과 음향방출 특성)

  • Fracture behaviors and acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of single-edge-notched monolithic aluminum plates and glass fiber/aluminum hybrid laminate plates have been investigated under tensile loads. AE signals from monolithic aluminum could be classified into two different types: signals with low frequency band and high frequency band. High frequency signals were detected in the post stage of loading beyond displacement of 0.45mm. For glass fiber/aluminum laminates, AE signals with high amplitude and long duration were additionally confirmed on FFT frequency analysis, which corresponded to macro-crack propagation and/or delamination between A1 and fiber layers. On the basis of the above AE analysis and fracture observation with optical microscopy and ultrasonic T scan, characteristic features of AE associated with fracture processes of single-edge-notched glass fiber/aluminum laminates were elucidated according to different fiber ply orientations.

Estimating Armington Substitution Elasticity between Domestic and Imported Wood Products in Korea (목제품 시장에서 국산품과 수입품의 아밍턴 대체 탄성치 추정)

  • This paper assesses the tariff reduction on imported wood products that will have impact on the demand for domestic wood products in South Korea, by estimating the Armington substitution elasticities based on the assumption that they are imperfect substitutes. Results indicate that domestic and foreign wood products are far from perfect substitutes to each other. The substitution elasticities in plywood and fiberboard appeared to be high, implying that tariff reduction may have negative effects on those industries. On the contrary, imported and domestic particleboard showed a low substitution elasticity. The decline of fiberboard industry may lead to the decline in forestry since fiberboard is produced mainly by thinned woods supplied from domestic forests. Therefore, effective countermeasures to enhance the competitiveness of wood products industry are needed to cope with the market opening.

Rigidity and Vibration Analysis on Fiber-Reinforced Composite Corrugated Plates (섬유 강화형 복합재료 주름판의 강성 및 진동 해석)

  • In this study, the rigidities of fiber-reinforced composite corrugated plates are derived to achieve the weight reduction, high strength, and high stiffness. The vibration of the corrugated plates for all the conventional boundary conditions in the plates is analyzed numerically by applying the derived rigidities, and so the analysis system is programmed to obtain the results by using Visual Basic language. Consequently, the characteristics of fiber-reinforced composite corrugated plates can be easily investigated from the results provided by the programmed system.

Fatigue Characterization of Glass/Polypropylene Composite Bone Plates Locked with an Artificial Tibia under Moisture Environment (인조골에 체결된 유리섬유/폴리프로필렌 복합재료 고정판의 수분 환경 피로 특성)

  • In this study, bone plate made of glass/polypropylene composite material which was applied to an artificial bone was tested to check the service ability under fatigue loading. To check serviceability of composite bone plates fatigue test was carried out considering changes in the moisture absorption rate, locking position of screws and loading condition. Test results showed that all the tested specimens had the fatigue life more than one million cycles which was much higher fatigue life than the expected value of 650,000 cycles. Screw position was not critical impact on the deformation of the fracture site. In this paper, the mechanical performance of the glass/polypropylene composite was verified by fatigue test under various water absorption conditions, and this result may give useful information on the design of composite bone plate.

A study on the forming condition of a bone plate made of a glass/polypropylene composite (Twintex) (유리섬유/폴리프로필렌 복합재료 (Twintex)를 이용한 고정판 성형조건에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, tensile and bending tests of glass/polypropylene composite (Twintex) specimens fabricated by various forming conditions were carried out and the results were compared according to the forming conditions to find the appropriate condition for the forming composite bone plates. From the tests it was found that the most appropriate forming conditions were $230^{\circ}C$, 3MPa. Composite bone plates were formed using this condition by two different fabricating methods for screw holes: one was a net shape molding and the other was drilling. The forming and bending tests revealed that the drilling process provided much better bending stiffness of bone plates. This paper provided the most appropriate condition for forming composite bone plates and this result was also expected to offer informative data on forming of other Twintex structures.
