Recently the necessity of developing the Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) for shallow foundation has been raised to implement to the domestic design codes related to geotechnical engineering since the limit state design is requested as international technical standard for the foundation of structures. In this study, applicability of LRFD for shallow foundation on weathered soils was investigated and resistance factor for this case was proposed. The quantitative analyses on the uncertainty and resistance bias for shallow foundation on weathered soil ground were performed by collecting the statistical data about domestic case studies for design and construction of shallow foundation. Reliability analyses for shallow foundation were first performed using FDA (First-order Design value Approach) method. Resistance factors were calibrated using the load factors obtained from the specifications of shallow foundations on weathered soil ground. The influence of the load factors developed in this study on the resistance factors were discussed by comparing with the resistance factor obtained from using AASHTO load factors.
The inelastic design of the three-span continuous composite plate girder with consideration of moment redistribution over the interior pier is performed using the LRFD method. The design of the girder section, based on the inelastic method, is compared with that by the conventional elastic design. The length of the center span for the three-span continuous bridge ranges from 40m to 70m and the relative ratio of the span length is assumed to be 4:5:4. Although the AASHTO- LRFD specifications are applied in the design of the composite girder, the recently proposed new design live load is used. After determining the maximum positive and negative sections by the elastic design for various limit states, the amount of moment redistributed to the maximum positive moment section is calculated. With the increased design moment due to moment redistribution from the interior pier, the maximum positive section designed by the elastic method is checked for the strength limit state and the service limit state. The maximum negative moment section is redesigned by reducing the size of the steel girder relative to the section designed by the elastic method and the new section is checked for the service limit state. Based on the design results for the five bridges considered in this study, it is estimated that about 23% of steel can be saved in the interior pier section if it is designed by the inelastic method compared with that designed by the elastic method.

Traffic load comprise primary input to pavement design causing pavement damage. therefore it should be proceeded suitable traffic load distribution modeling for pavement design and analysis. Traffic load have been represented by equivalent single axle loads (ESALs) which convert mixed traffic stream into one value for design purposes. But there are some limit to apply ESALs to other roads because it is empirical value developed as part of the original AASHO(American Association of State Highway Officials) road test. There have been many efforts to solve these problems. Several leading country have implemented M-E(Mechanistic-Empirical) design procedures based on mechanical concept. As a result, they established traffic load quantification method using load distribution model known as Axle Load Spectra. This paper details Axle Load Spectra and presents axle load distribution model based on normal mixture distribution function using truck load data collected by WIM system installed in national highway. Axle load spectra and axle load distribution model presented in this paper could be useful for basic data when making traffic load quantification plan for pavement design, overweight vehicle permit plan and pavement maintenance cost plan.

Due to the economic growth and development of construction technology, a role of foundation to resist heavy loads has been increased. In this present study to improve the structural performance of reinforced concrete pile, the precast HPC pile reinforced with rebar and filling concrete was developed and the strength of pile was predicted based on the limit state design method. The safety of HPC pile strength was evaluated by comparing with the design values. The geometry of HPC pile is a decagon cross section with a maximum width of 500 mm and a minimum width of 475 mm, and the hollow head of pile thickness is 70 mm. The inner area of the hollow head part was made as the square ribbed shape presented in the limit state design code in order to achieve horizontal shear strength between pile concrete and filling concrete. From the shear test results, it was found that the stable shear strength were secured without abrupt failure until maximum load stage despite the shear cracks was found. Shear strength is 135% and 119% higher than that of design value calculated from limit state design code. The driving test results of HPC pile according to the presence of additional reinforcement showed the outstanding crack resistance against impact loads condition. From the bending test results the flexural load between PHC pile and HPC pile was 1.51 times and 1.48 times higher than that of the design flexural load of conventional PHC pile.

Limit state design has been implemented in Korea since 2015; however, there exists no specification of lateral load determination on retaining wall due to the Korean standard traffic load on retaining wall's backfill surface. The lateral load from traffic depends on lane number, standard truck's axle loads and locations, loading distance from the inner wall. The concept of equivalent height of soil accounting for traffic loadings is typically used for design of retaining walls to quantify the traffic loads transmitted to the inner wall faces. Due to the different characteristics of the standard design trucks between Korea and US (AASHTO), the direct use of the guidelines from AASHTO LRFD leads to incorrect estimation of traffic load effects on retaining walls. This paper presents the results of evaluation of equivalent height of soil to reflect the Korean standard truck, based on the findings from analytical solutions using Bounessq's theory and numerical assessment using 2D finite element method. Consequently, it was found that the equivalent heights of soil from the Korean standard truck load were lower for lower retaining wall height.

This paper presents how the load transfer mechanism of the ground anchor affects on the stability analysis of anchored slope. The finite element analysis and the conventional limit equilibrium analysis on the anchored slope were performed and compared. The limit equilibrium analysis of the anchored slope is widely used in design practice due to the easiness of the analysis. However, the load transfer mechanism is not considered properly for the analysis. When the failure surface passes through the bonded length of an anchor, the anchor load is disregarded and the factor of safety for the anchored slope is smaller than it should be. In this study, the load transfer distribution was incorporated into the limit equilibrium stability analysis of the anchored slope and the results were compared with those of finite element analysis.

Member force, strain and stress distribution of a section are obtained for prestressed steel and concrete(PSSC) composite bridge subjected to dead and live load in order to interpret the effect of prestressing and deformation of tendon. The stress and strain distribution and moment capacity are obtained for both noncomposite and composite section and for allowable stress limit state, yield limit state and strength limit state. Reliability analysis is conducted after assuming limit states for deflection, stress and flexural strength. Comparing that the reliability index for stress is near 0 for example section which is designed to satisfy the allowable stress exactly, the reliability indexes for deflection and flexural strength are high. Reliability of PSSC girder which is designed based on allowable stress of bridge design code is high for deflection and flexural strength.

Driving a prefabricated pile is the efficient construction method with low cost and excellent bearing capacity charateristics. But pile drinving method has often been changed to bored pile method with mechanical boring due to the unexpected problems occurred in the various domestic ground condition with landfill. So, pile driving method has more uncertainty than the Bored Pile method. This paper proposed LRFD design value which is one of limit states design method for the PHC driven pile used as building foundation to guarantee the reliable design with reduced uncertainty. This paper analysed 221 dynamic load test results(E.O.I.D : 93, Resrike : 128) and the different methods of estimating bearing design(Meyerhof method & SPT-CPT conversion method), and proposed LRFD value for each design reliability Index 2.33 and 3.0 for PHC driven pile. LRFD value of PHC driven pile represents 0.43~0.55 for Meyerhof method and 0.40~0.49 for SPT-CPT conversion method according to the deign reliability index.

The calibration of resistance factor in reliability theory for limit state design of gravel compaction piles (GCP) requires a reliable estimate of ultimate bearing capacity. The static load test is commonly used in geotechnical engineering practice to predict the ultimate bearing capacity. Many graphical methods are specified in the design standard to define the ultimate bearing capacity based on the load-settlement curve. However, it has some disadvantages to ensure reliability to obtain an uniform ultimate load depend on engineering judgement. In this study, a well-fitting nonlinear regression model is proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity, for which a nonlinear regression analysis is applied to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity of GCP and the results are compared with those calculated using previous graphical method. Affect the resistance factor of the estimate method were analyzed. To provide a database in the development of limit state design, the load test conditions for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity from static load test are examined.

For the lateral load resistance of a RC frame in a medium risk seismic zone, the strength of lower story beams and columns should be larger than those of the upper stories. However, the lateral loads can be accommodated by redistributing design beam moments vertically as well as horizontally so all beams end up with identical strengths. This paper looks at the impact of the vertical redistribution of beam moments to provide identical beam strength over as many floors as possible. Two-bay six-story RC frame was designed with and without vertical beam moment redistribution and its seismic performance were evaluated by using push-over limit analysis and by non-linear time history dynamic analysis. Analytical results show that with the use of vertical beam moment redistribution the increase in the ductility demand is similar to the proportion of moment redistribution applied, but this additional demand is below the ductility capacity of well detailed RC members.
