  • HSA800 is a new high strength steel (HSS) plate for building structures developed by POSCO and RIST in 2011. It has upper and lower bounds for yield ($F_y$) and tensile ($F_u$) strength as of 650-770MPa and 800-950MPa, respectively, with yield ratio ($F_y/F_u$) limit as of 0.85 which make steel quality more reliable and enhance the seismic resistance of structures. As made by TMCP, it has a good weldability without increasing carbon percentage. The objective of this study is to provide alternative design of mega-structural members of the Lotte World Tower (555m, 123 story), a first super-tall building in Korea, using HSS considering structural safety, constructability, and cost-effectiveness. Steel outrigger trusses, belt-trusses and steel exterior columns were selected and analyzed to evaluate the structural performance between original and alternative designs using HSS. The results show that HSS can be applied to the members which do not affect lateral stiffness of a building and, in this study, approximately 1100tons of steel were saved. It implies that HSS can save overall construction costs - manufacturing, delivery, and erection costs - by reducing mega structural member size. HSA800 was very first applied to the Lotte World Tower based on the results of this study.

  • This paper aims at experimentally investigating the relationship between tensile load and average strain in the tension zone of SFRC beam. Also, it is attempted to find post cracking tension behavior of SFRC under tensile loading condition. The tension stiffening test is conducted on the long prizm of SFRC which embeds reinforcing bar in both ends of member. From this study, an empirical equation which represents the tension stiffening effect(i.e.effect of increasing tensile-~3trengthening contnbuted by SFRC when the reinforcing bar embeded in the SFRC member is under tensile loading condition) as a function of the average strain is presented .

  • In a tension-controlled section, all steel tension reinforcement is assumed to yield at ultimate when using the strength design method to calculate the nominal flexural strength of members with steel reinforcement arranged in multiple layers. Therefore, the tension force is assumed to act at the centroid of the reinforcement with a magnitude equal to the area of tension reinforcement times the yield strength of steel. Because FRP materials have no plastic region, the stress in each reinforcement layer will vary depending on its distance from the neutral axis. Similarly, if different types of FRP bars are used to reinforce the same member, the stress level in each bar type will vary, and the member will show different behavior from our expectation. In this study, six high-strength concrete beam specimens reinforced with conventional steels, CFRP bars, and GFRP bars as flexural reinforcements were constructed and tested. The members reinforced with hybrid reinforcements showed higher stiffness, smaller crack width, and better ductility than the members reinforced with single type of FRP bars.

  • An experimental program was carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete with compressive strengths of 80 to 120 MPa was tested. Test results are presented regarding effect of water-binder ratio on compressive strength and compressive strength gain. In addition, the effect of curing methods on compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of rupture is investigated. Test results of elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of rupture are compared with predictions from the current design recommendations. Predictions of elastic modulus by using KCI recommendation has good agreement with test results. However, predictions of modulus of rupture by using KCI recommendation underestimate the test results. ACI 363R recommendations predict well test results of splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture. ACI 363R recommendations for predicting splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture can be used for high-strength concrete with compressive strengths up to 120 MPa.

  • Impact behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) laminates were evaluated with tension test and compact tension test. A steel ball launched by an air gun collides against CFRP laminates to generate impact damage of relatively low energy. The static tensile and fracture toughness tests were performed to evaluate the residual strength and the AE behavior of impact-damaged laminates. As a results, it was found that the static strength, the fracture toughness and the AE-event count were decreased with increasing of impact velocity and delamination area, and to have a different strength ratio and fracture toughness ratio for each stacking method. And also, it was confirmed that strength and fracture toughness of impact-damaged CFRP laminates could be evaluated and analyzed quantitatively by AE techniques.

  • A T-stub connection with high-strength bolts under tensile force is affected by prying action force and the contact force, among others, between members. If a design equation that does not consider such prying action force and contact force between members is not proposed, the T-stub under tensile force is liable to be fractured under the strength lower than the estimated design strength. To prevent it, many studies have proposed contact force estimation equations between members as well as the prying action force of the T-stub connection with high-strength bolts. However, no design equations based on such research have been proposed in South Korea. Therefore, this study aims to propose an estimation model for more accurate prying action force and contact force, and improve on previously proposed estimation models by implementing the three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis. Throughout the results of three-dimensional, nonlinear finite element analysis, the prediction model proposed in this research for the prying action force and contact force of a T-stub provided much more accurate estimation than that of a existing prediction model previously suggested.

  • This study evaluate the characteristics of stainless steel for the use of stainless steel tubes as structural members. The strength of stainless steel tube was compared with that of steel tube stub-columns through tensile experiment and compressed experiment. The selected experimental parameters were diameter (width)-thickness and section shape. The results of tests showed that stainless steel tubes could be predicted as superior to steel tubes in terms of tensile strength, yield ratio, elongation percentage, and absorption ability of energy. The yield strength of stainless steel tubes were found to be higher than the Korean Standards ($Fy=2.1tf/cm^2$) and the design strength of SIJ-ASD($Fy=2.4tf/cm^2$). It was also higher then the yield strength of steel tubes. The plastic deformation of stainless steel tubes was found to beto that of steel tubes.

  • In concrete structural design provisons, two methods are normally provided to control deflection; direct method and indirect method. It is more efficient to use the indirect deflection control by which the span/depth ratio is limited not to exceed an allowable deflection limit. Because actual deflections are affected by many causes, it is complicated to evaluate actual deflections. In this study, limit span/depth ratios are derived from the deflection calculated directly at the serviceability limit state in RC members. The deflection is obtained from using average curvature, which depends on materials model used. The main variables examined are tension stiffening effect, concrete strength, cross section size and compressive steel ratio. It could be appeared that more analytical consistency is secured to use the 2nd order form of tension stiffening effect. And the limit span/depth ratio is dependent on material strength, tensile and compressive steel ratio but it is independent on cross-section size.

  • In this study, micro CT images were used to confirm the tensile fracture strength according to the pore distribution characteristics of 3D printed concrete. Unlike general specimens, concrete structures printed by 3D printing techniques have the direction of pores (voids) depending on the stacking direction and the presence of filaments contact surfaces. Accordingly, the pore distribution of 3D printed concrete specimens was analyzed through quantitative and qualitative methods, and the tensile strength by direction was analyzed through a finite element technique. It was confirmed that the pores inside the 3D printed specimen had directionality, resulting in their anisotropic behavior. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of 3D concrete printing specimen and correlate them with simulation-based mechanical properties to improve performance of 3D printed material and structure.
