Pathological Study of Tumors Occurring in Dog (견종양(犬腫瘍)의 병리학적(病理學的) 검색(檢索))

  • The following tumors occurring naturally in the dog were studied pathologically and discussed briefly. Tumors of the skin and subcutis: Fibroma, Lipoma, Epidermal cyst, Melanosarcoma, Sweat gland adenoma, Mastocytoma (2 cases), Mastosarcoma, and Sebaceous gland carcinoma. Tumors of the spleen and lymph node: Fibrosarcoma of the capsule of spleen, Leiomysarcoma of the spleen, and Lymphosarcoma of the lymph node (2 cases). Tumors of the lung: Bronchogenic carcinoma (3 cases), Adenocarcinoma type, Squamous carcinoma type, and Undifferentiated (round cell) carcinoma type respectively. Tumors of the alimentary tract and liver: Fibroma of the stomach, Hemangioma of the liver, Bile duct carcinoma, Liver cell carcinoma, and Myelogenous leukemia manifested in the liver. Tumor of the peritoneum: Fibrosarcoma. Tumors of the urogenital system: Fibroma of the uterus, Fibroma of the prepuce, Follicular cyst of the ovary, Transmissible venereal tumor of the vagina (6 cases), Carcinoma of the kidney, Adenoma of the prostate (2 cases), and Seminoma of the testis. Tumors of the mammary gland: Mixed tumor (2 cases), and Myoepithelioma. Tumor of the nervous system: Neurofibrosarcoma of the thigh.

Physicochemical Characteristics and Biological Activities of Makgeolli Supplemented with the Fruit of Akebia quinata during Fermentation (으름 열매를 첨가한 막걸리의 이화학적 특성 및 생리활성)

  • We investigated the characteristics and biological activity of makgeolli supplemented with different levels (0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, and 7%) of Akebia quinata fruit during fermentation. Our results showed that supplementation with Akebia quinata fruit led to an increase in the acidity level, amino acid concentration, alcohol content, and total sugar level. Makgeolli supplemented with 7% Akebia quinata fruit showed the highest total sensory score. Supplementation with Akebia quinata fruit resulted in a significant increase in the antioxidant activity and nitric oxide inhibitory activity. Further, makgeolli supplemented with Akebia quinata fruit showed anticancer activity against DU145, HeLa, MCF-7, and U87cells, and significantly enhanced antibacterial activity against Shigella flexneri. Our results indicate that Akebia quinata fruit represents an effective natural additive for enhancing the biological activities of makgeolli.

Dramatic Tumor Response to 2nd-line Pemetrexed/Cisplatin Combination Chemotherapy in Patient with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma (Pemetrexed/cisplatin 병합 2차 항암화학요법에 극적 반응을 보인 악성 흉막 중피종 1예)

  • Malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare tumor that is difficult to clearly distinguish from an adenocarcinoma but usually has a poor prognosis. Numerous cytotoxic agents have been used in the primary treatment of MPM with limited success. A complete response is unusual and a partial response occurs in less than one-third of patients. Recently, a phase III trial showed that a combination of pemetrexed with cisplatin resulted in a significantly higher response rate and median survival time than with cisplatin alone. We encountered a case of a dramatic tumor response to pemetrexed/cisplatin combination chemotherapy in patients with MPM, which was resistant to the 1st-line gemcitabine/cisplatin therapy. After six cycles of pemetrexed/cisplatin combination chemotherapy, the tumor volume had decreased dramatically with complete symptom relief. There was no chemotherapy-related toxicity or scheduled violation. The patient is under maintenance chemotherapy with the same regimen.

External Radiation Therapy Combined with Hyperthermia in the Carcinoma of Extrahepatic Biliary System (간외 담관계암의 방사선치료와 온열치료의 병용요법)

  • From January 1985 to September 1990, 7 patients with carcinoma of the extrahepatic biliary system received external radiaiton therapy combined with hyperthermia. Of the 3 patients with extrahepatic bile duct cancer, two were primary cholangiocarcinoma and one was metastatic peripancreatic carcinoma. Of the 4 patients with carcinoma of the gallbladder, two were locor-egionally advanced and unresectable carcinoma and the remaining two were local-regional recurrence after cholecystectomy. They were all pathologicallly proven adenocarcinoma. The radiation dose received ranged from 3000 cGy/2weeks to 5040 cGy/7 weeks. The hyperthermia was done once or twice a week and 4 to 12 sessions in total. The tumor response was confirmed by T-tube cholangiography, percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography and CT scan. 6 out of 7 ($86\%$) showed partial regression of the tumor. The median survival time was 7 months (range $4\~11$ months).6 out of 7 patients were dead: one died of septicemia, 4 of primary disease, one of distant metastases. Only one out of 7 patients is still alive but new metastatic lesion was found. There was not any treatment related deaths. There was also no evidence of treatment related problems with liver, stomach and duodenum, although the observation period was short.

Study of plasma TGF-β1 level as a useful tumor marker in gastric cancer and prostate cancer (위암 및 전립선암의 종양 표지 인자로서 혈장 TGF-β1에 대한 연구)

  • Transforming growth $factor-{\beta}1$ ($TGF-{\beta}1$) is a multipotent growth factor affecting development, homeostasis and tissue repair. Many kinds of malignant tissues were reported to overexpress transforming growth $factor-{\beta}1$ ($TGF-{\beta}1$) gene. However, a little work has been done on the circulating $TGF-{\beta}1$ and the association of $TGF-{\beta}1$ with progression in patients with malignant tumors. In this study, we measured the plasma level of $TGF-{\beta}1$ in gastric cancer and prostate cancer patients and evaluated the utility of plasma $TGF-{\beta}1$ as a possible tumor marker. We used Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) system in order to measure plasma $TGF-{\beta}1$ level in 134 gastric cancer patients, 50 prostate cancer patients and 290 normal controls. And the tumor marker, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), prostate-specific antigen (PSA), was compared with $TGF-{\beta}1$ in the aspects of sensitivity and specificity. The mean plasma $TGF-{\beta}1$ levels were $1.219{\pm}0.834$ (0.272-5.772) ng/mL in normal controls, $5.964{\pm}3.218$ (0.845-18.124) ng/mL in gastric cancer and $4.140{\pm}2.345$ (1.108-13.302) ng/mL in prostate cancer. In gastric cancer patients difference in plasma $TGF-{\beta}1$ level was not detected according to cancer stage. In comparison with other tumor marker (CEA, PSA) $TGF-{\beta}1$ is more potent in sensitivity. These results indicate that the plasma $TGF-{\beta}1$ level can be a potent tumor marker in gastric cancer and prostate cancer.

A Regional Study on the Korean Toilet Culture (韓國 통시(뒷간) 文化의 地域的 硏究)

  • According to cultural diffusion route, the Korean toilet culture could be classified as southern culture and northern culture, In Cheju Island the toilet is located on the stone fence of swine. The native people of Cheju Island name it as TONGSHI. And Southern culture could be diffused from South Sea to Cheju Island by the sea current. Around Mt.Chiri area, the greater part of traditional toilets are on the upper floor in the barn, and pigs are on the bottom floor under the toilet. This type of toilet would be the northern culture of the toilet, which would be diffused from continent of Asia to Korean Peninsula. Residents of these areas also name this toilet as TONGSHI. The Korean word "TONGSHI" means a toilet on the pig fence. Traditional toilet culture in Korea differs from regions and residents. We can find dry-closets in Seon-am Temple and Song-kawng Temple. This high floor dry-closet type would be effected by Buddhism. In the reclaimed land and islands of west sea we could not find the old traditional toilets.l toilets.

Growth Inhibition and Apoptosis Induction of Sulindac on Human Lung Cancer Cells (비소세포 폐암 세포주에서 Sulindac의 성장억제와 세포고사 유도)

  • Background : Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) are useful in chemoprevention of colorectal cancers. Continuous NSAID administation causes 40% to 50% reduction in relative risk for colorectal cancer. Sulindac possesses an antiproliferative effect and induces apoptosis and tumor regression on colon cancer and other types of cancers. We intended to analyze the effects of sulindac in three non-small cell lung cancer cell lines. Materials and Methods : The human lung cancer cell lines, A549, NCI-H157 and NCI-H460 were used for this study. Viability was tested by MTT assay, and cell death rate was measured by lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) release. Apoptosis was estimated by flow cytometric analysis and nuclear staining. Results: Sulindac was able to decrease the viability of non-small cell lung cancer cells in a dose- and time- dependent manner. In a parallel effect of sulindac on cell death rate, LDH release was increased in sulindac-treated lung cancer cells. Sulindac significantly increased apoptosis characterized by an increase of $sub-G_0/G_1$ fraction and morphological change of nuclei. The rate of apoptotic cells after sulindac treatment in lung cancer cells increased in a time- and dose- dependent manner in flow cytometric analysis. Apoptotic cells were defined as nuclear shrinkage, chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation of cells. Conclusion : Sulindac decreases viability and induces the apoptosis of lung cancer cells. Further studies will be needed to elucidate the potential mechanism of sulindac-induced apoptosis in lung cancer cells.

Effect of Fermented Ginseng Extract by Mushroom Mycelia on Antiproliferation of Cancer Cells (버섯균사체로 발효시킨 인삼 추출물의 암세포 증식억제 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of fermented ginseng extract by mushroom mycelia on antiproliferation of cancer cells. Phellinus linteus, Ganoderma lucidum, and Hericium erinaceum mycelia were inoculated to ginseng. The effects of fermented ginseng extract on antiproliferation of stomach (MKN-45), colon (HCT116), mammary (MCF-7), lung (NCIH460), prostate (PC-3), and liver (HepG2) cancer cells were investigated by MTT assay. Fermented ginseng extract showed significant antiproliferation effects compared with fresh ginseng extract. Fermented ginseng extract by P. linteus, G. lucidum, and H. erinaceum mycelia showed growth-inhibitory effect of 44.50, 17.75 and 43.98% viability at 1.5 mg/mL on the MKN-45 cell line, 62.86, 3.73, and 54.55% at 1.5 mg/mL on the HCT116 cell line, 41.81, 7.01, and 37.84% at 1.5 mg/mL on the MCF-7 cell line, 53.52, 5.31, and 35.27% at 1.5 mg/mL on the NCIH460 cell line, 35.05, 3.07, and 44.29% at 1.5 mg/mL on the PC-3 cell line, and 59.57, 6.34, and 4.97% at 1.5 mg/mL on the HepG2 cell line, respectively. These results indicated that fermented ginseng by G. lucidum mycelium showed the highest antiproliferation effect against various cancer cells.

Burden of disease of major cancers assessment using years of lives with disability in Korea (장애에 따른 상실건강년수를 활용한 우리 나라 주요 암질환의 질병부담에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out for the burden of disease of major cancers assessment using years of lives with disability in Korea. With the years of lives with disability, this indicator was applied in order to estimate burden of major cancer disease. For this work, We also estimated incidence rate, remission rater case fatality rate, average age of onset, expected duration with disability in each cancer disease. As sources of information, national health insurance data and national mortality registration data were analyzed. The results of the study are as follows; The top five causes of the burden of major cancer disease are evaluated as stomach cancer, liver cancer, colon and rectum cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer in male. The top five causes of the burden of major cancer disease are evaluated as stomach cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, uterine cervix cancer ovarian cancer in female. The process of evaluating the burden disease of major cancers in Korea has not finished with this paper. This study should be seen as the first in a series in Korea. It is necessary to analyse with more accuracy the assumptions behind the methodology.

Expression of the Epidermal Growth Factor and Tumor Necrosis Factor-$\alpha$ in Lung Cancer (폐암에서 Epidermal growth factor와 Tumor Necrosis Factor-$\alpha$의 발현)

  • 배경: 폐암발생에 EGF의 자가 분비는 암의 성장과정에 직, 간접적인 영향을 주고 있으며, TNF-$\alpha$는 면역 반응의 급성체로서 폐암의 발생을 억제하고 이미 발생한 폐암종의 치료에도 이용되고 있는 실정이다. 폐암 조직과 혈장에서 epidermal growth factor(EGF)와 tumor necrosis factor-$\alpha$(TNF-$\alpha$)를 면역 방사선 분석법을 이용하여 정량분석 하여 발현 정도를 분석해보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법: 폐암환자 20례와 양성종양 및 육아종 환자 4례에 대해서 AJCCS에 의한 조직학적 분류와 TNM 분류에 따라 구분하여 절제수술을 받은 환자를 대상으로 수술전 혈액을 채취하고 수술직후 적출한 표본을 암이 없는 건강하다고 판단되는 대조조직과 폐암조직에서 일정량의 조직을 절취하여 액화질소 내에 실험시까지 급속 냉동보관 하였다. 수술후 혈액을 재 채취하여 혈장을 분리하여 냉동고에 검사시까지 보관하였다. EGF의 정량은 Human Epidermal Growth Factor kit(Amersham Phamacia Biotech, England)를 사용하였으며, TNF-$\alpha$ 정량은 TNF-$\alpha$ IRMA kit(Biosouce, Belgium)을 사용하여 IRMA 방법으로 각각 정량분석하여 표현유무를 연구한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 결과: 1. 대조조직, 양성종양 및 육아종과 폐암 수술전후의 조직과 혈청 모두에서 EGF와 TNF-$\alpha$가 발현되었다. 2. EGF와 TNF-$\alpha$의 농도는 대조조직과 양성종양(0.11$\pm$0.06 ng/ml, 20,3$\pm$9.08 pg/ml)에 비하여 폐암조직(0.13$\pm$0.05 ng/ml, 34.34$\pm$47.74pg/ml)에서 유의하게 높은 농도가 발현되고 있었다. 3. 폐암중 선암조직에서 특히 TNF-$\alpha$(80.92$\pm$104.08 ng/ml)의 발현이 강하게 나타났다. 4. 혈청내의 EGF와 TNF-$\alpha$의 발현되는 양이 조직내의 양보다도 높았다. EGF는 5.7배정도 TNF는 1.3배정도 강하게 표현되었다. 5. 폐암의 조직학적 종류에 따라서 EGF는 거의 차이가 없었으나 TNF-$\alpha$ 정량치에는 차이가 있었다. 6. TNM stage가 진행함에 따라 EGF는 농도가 증가하였고 TNF-$\alpha$는 오히려 감소하는 반대되는 교차현상이 있었다. 7. 수술직후 EGF는 증가하였으나 TNF-$\alpha$는 오히려 감소하였다. 결론: 결론적으로 저자는 암조직과 대조조직간에 EGF와 TNF-$\alpha$의 표현량의 차이가 있음을 관찰하였으며 또한 조직과 혈청사이에도 표현량에 차이가 있으며 조직보다도 오히려 혈청내의 농도가 높다는 사실을 관찰하였다. EFG와 TNF-$\alpha$는 정상조직이나 양성조직과 폐암조직 모두에서 분비작용되는 cytokines으로 세포기능에 따라 다양하게 표현이 되며 계속적인 연구로서 밝혀야만 할 과제라고 판단된다.
