This study estimated the genetic parameters of growth-related traits from 11-month-old olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) base population in which wild and cultured broodstocks were introduced. The heritability of body weight, total length, body height, body shape, and condition factor of the base population was estimated to be 0.754, 0.753, 0.789, 0.438, and 0.369, respectively. Genetic correlations between body weight and total length, between body weight and body height, and between total length and body height were 0.969, 0.960, and 0.960, respectively, showing highly positive correlation. Genetic correlations between body weight and body shape, between total length and body shape, between body height and body shape were -0.403, -0.344, and -0593, respectively, showing low negative correlation. Overall, olive flounder might be an appropriate selective breeding species with the high heritability of the traits in an 11-month-old population.

The studies were intended to clarify the effects of selection in sesame breeding. The 82 cultivars of sesame were used as the materials, and 14 quantitative characters were measured on individual plant basis. Selection indexes and genetic advances were calculated by Robinson's methods. In genetic advance values, combinations of days to flowering + number of capsule per plant, days to flowering + length of stem with capsule + number of capsule per plant and days to flowering + number of nodes with capsule were higher than those of other combinations. The highest genetic advance was the combination of all characters, but unreasonable problems such as the expence, time and labor involved in calculating the selection index are remained. For these reasons, it was realized that the selection index for selection should calculated on the basis of the data of 2-3 useful characters, i.e., days to flowering, length of stem with capsule and number of capsule per plant.

This experiment was carried out to investigate the heritabilities, genetic correlations, path-coefficients, selection indexes and genetic advances for the desirable characteristics of naked-barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in the central region of Korea. Genetic advances were calculated from selection indexes for each characters. It was considered that selection efficiency was increased in case it was calculated from the combination of two or three characters. These characters should be very useful agronomic characters for selection because they could be measured and counted easily, and thus it is also possible to save labour and expenses.

There are many problems to single sports talents out of test applicants. The physical activity promotion system has been performed to all elements school students of both 5 and 6 grades in order to evaluate overall health and physical activities since 2009. This system includes some variables which could measure the students' sports latent power, so that the system could be used to single out sports talents. In this work, we propose a primary screening method that element school teachers might evaluate sports talents based on the data of the physical activity promotion system. Two more sports talent indices which are sports flexibility index and sports endurance index are defined. The selection method of sports talents is developed by using sports latent indices including sports power and cardiorespiratory indices. This method is efficient from the view of time and cost aspects, since we do not need to remeasure all elements school students again.

This study is conducted to use the real-time ultrasound measurement data of Hanwoo as basic data being available to improvement. We used the ultrasound measurement data of 1,125 heads of performance tested cattle and the carcass data after castrating at about 12 months of age, fattened to 30 months, and then sold. For 921 heads of progeny tested cattle, we used test data and slaughter data. Heritabilities of ultrasound data for longissimus muscle area and backfat thickness measured at 12 months of age were estimated as 0.57 and- 0.41, respectively, and at 24 months of age, it was 0.57 and- 0.60, respectively, with high heritability. However, in estimation value of heritability containing ultrasound measurement for percent intramuscular fat, it showed low and medium heritability as 0.14 at 12 months of age and 0.22 at 24 months of age for each. The longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness, and percent intramuscular fat of ultrasound measure traits and longissimus muscle area, backfat thickness, marbling score of carcass traits genetic correlation of at 12 months of age were estimated as 0.616, 0.544, 0.501, respectively and at 24 months of age, it showed high genetic correlation as 0.894, 0.937, 0.263, respectively. As a result of ranking correlation between selection index by using weight, carcass traits at 12 months of age and selection index based on ultrasound measurement data which has high genetic correlation, in data of ultrasound measurement at 12 months of age, it showed high ranking correlation as that selection index of young bull was 0.140 and that of proven bull was 0.843.

Wins above replacement (WAR) is the most commonly used statistics of the many sabermetrics that measure baseball players' abilities. The advantage of a WAR is that it enables to compare performances of players even though they have different roles such as pitcher and hitter. However, WAR is difficult to obtain with common records. Thus, in this paper, we have calculated the sabermetrics variable based on Korean professional baseball records for the past three years (2014-2016). Using these variables, we suggest starting pitcher ability index that can replace WAR. Starting pitcher ability index was calculated by means of arithmetic mean, weighted average and principal component regression. Then, compared to the WAR, the most relevant method was selected, which would be useful to identify for the starting pitcher ability.

In order to improve the efficiency of the main economic traits in layers the present selection index is based on body weight, age at first egg, egg production and egg weight. But as the edible parts of the egg, the yolk and the albumin, are very important economic traits, this study was conducted to estimate the selection indices combining the latter traits with the former traits, and to examine the accuracy of the indices. The experiment were 351 Single Comb White Leghorns(S. C. W. Leghorn) and 326 Rhode Island Reds (R. I. Red), improved by the closed flock breeding system at the Daejeon Branch Station of the National Livestock Breeding Station. The egg compositions were checked a total of 6097 eggs. The data for each traits were collected and analysed until 500 days of age from March 1, 1979.
