According to IMO, MASS is defined as a vessel operated at various levels independent of human interference. The safety navigation support service for MASS is designed to improve the safety and efficiency of MASS by developing public services on shore for ship arrivals/departures and for cargo handling. The safety navigation support service consists of a total of six types of services: autonomous operation, berthing/unberthing/mooring, cargo handling and ship arrival/departure service, PSC inspection, condition monitoring, and accident response support services. In order to support accident response service, the relative importance of a bridge navigational equipment was assessed by stratifying the navigation system to provide safe and efficient support services by objective judgment through specific and quantitative methods using AHP, one of decision-making methods used by an expert group. The survey was conducted by dividing the bridge navigational equipment into depth, location, and speed information. As a result of applying the AHP method, the importance of depth, location, and speed information was assessed. The relative importance of each equipment for providing location information was also assessed in order of Radar, DGPS, ECDIS, Gyro compass, Autopilot, and AIS. This was similar to survey results on the utilization of each operator's preference and its impact on marine accidents.
Seeking and recognizing maritime targets are very important tasks for maritime safety. While searching for maritime targets using radar is possible, recognition is conducted without automatic identification system, radio communicator or visibility. If this recognition is not feasible, radar operator must tediously recognize maritime targets using movement features on radar base on know-how and experience. In this paper, to support the radar operator's mission of continuous observation, we propose an algorithm for automatic recognition of an unknown ship using movement features on radar and a method of detecting potential ship related accidents. We extract features from contact range, course and speed of four types of vessels and evaluate the recognition accuracy using SVM and suggest a method of detecting potential ship related accidents through the algorithm. Experimentally, the resulting recognition accuracy is found to be more than 90% and presents the possibility of detecting potential ship related accidents through the algorithm using information of MV Sewol. This method is an effective way to support operator's know-how and experience in various circumstances and assist in detecting potential ship related accidents.

RADAR (RAdio Detection And Ranging)

Due to global warming it is estimated that the arctic ocean route will be avaliable and traffic will increase by approximately year 2030. However, most navigation in the arctic is based on the ice breaker captains'orders, there is no exact measurement of convoy speed and distance between ships. So, this research was conducted to find out the minimum safe separation distance and minimum breaking distance via ship controling simulations, and the results are as stated. For breaking distances, for ships that have a lead distance which is 2~4 times the width of the ship and traveling less than 7 knots, crash astern and crash astern & hard rudder showed no significant difference. But ships traveling at 10 knots there was a decrease in breaking distance of 1L, from 3.5L to 2.5L. By analyzing 10 subject ships by crash astern the breaking distance for 5 knots is 0.98L~1.8L, for 8 knots is 1.9L~4.0L. The minimum safe separation distance in narrow sea-ways is 6L, but as the arctic sea-way is only one-way 3L is required. As the result, it is found that in the arctic the safe escort speed is less than 5 knots, if the escort speed is 8knots or more and by using crash astern & hard rudder to break the safe distance should be kept at 3.4L.

In recently, ship trajectory data consisting of ship position, speed, course, and so on can be obtained from the Automatic Identification System device with which all ships should be equipped. These data are gathered more than 2GB every day at a crowed sea port and used for analysis of ship traffic statistic and patterns. In this study, we propose a method to process ship trajectory data efficiently with distributed computing resources using MapReduce algorithm. In data preprocessing phase, ship dynamic and static data are integrated into target dataset and filtered out ship trajectory that is not of interest. In mapping phase, we convert ship's position to Geohash code, and assign Geohash and ship MMSI to key and value. In reducing phase, key-value pairs are sorted according to the same key value and counted the ship traffic number in a grid cell. To evaluate the proposed method, we implemented it and compared it with IALA waterway risk assessment program(IWRAP) in their performance. The data processing performance improve 1 to 4 times that of the existing ship trajectory analysis program.
Using motions (Maruo) and wave reflection (the author), speed loss due to wind (van Berlekom) and ITTC standard spectrum, and various effects of weather(:such as weather intensity, ship type, ship size and draught) on ship speed performance at sea were investigated. Further, a comparison of the relative effects of weather and hull roughness on speed loss was also studied for a VLCC.

It is well known that the ship manoeuvring motion is greatly affected by hydrodynamic forces and moments acting between two vessels passing too close to each other in confined waters, such as in a harbour or narrow channel. This interaction between two vessels could be assumed to be the functions of the longitudinal distance, transverse distance and their speeds. The aim of this study is to calculate the interaction between two vessels passing close to each other on parallel courses by simulation, and to estimate the effect of rudder action and time at collision through simulation under the condition of various longitudinal distances and different speed-ratios of the two vessels.
