  • The studies are conducted on the changes of soybean lipids in terms of physicochemical characteristics, lipid classess and fatty acid composition during the fermentation process of soybean Koji preparation for daenjang (soybean paste) in a model system using cooked soybean inoculated by Aspergillus oryzae. The total lipids contents were increased during soybean Koji preparation, generally iodine values decreased but acid values increased. Total lipids of soybean Koji consisted of about 90.6% neutral lipids, 7.6% phospholipids and 1.8%, glycolipids indicating that phospholipids contents of soybean Koji was increased when compared to those of cooked soybean. The major components of nonpolar lipids in soybean Koji were free fatty acids(39.6%) and triglycerids(29.2%). Free fatty acids increased as the triglycerides decreased during soybean Koji preparation by the hydrolysis of lipase action. The major components of polar lipids in soybean Koji were phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl ethanolamine. Differences were observed in the composition of the polar lipids of cooked soybean and soybean Koji. A little changes also occurred in fatty acid compositions of total lipids, triglycerides and free fatty acids fractions in soybean Koji preparation. Especially a considerable increase of linoleic acid in free fatty acid fraction was observed in soybean Koji.

  • Purpose : A retrospective study was conducted comparing single daily fraction (SDF) thoracic radiotherapy (TRT) with twice daily (BID) TRT to determine the potential benefit of BID TRT in limited-stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Endpoints of the study were response. survival, pattern of failure, and acute toxicity. Materials and Methods : Between November 1989 to December 1996, 78 patients with histologically proven limited-stage SCLC were treated at the Department of Therapeutic Radiology, Chungnam National University Hospital. Of these, 9 were irradiated for palliative intent, and 1 had recurrent disease. Remaining 68 patients were enrolled in this study. There were 26 patients with a median age of 58 years, and 22 (85$\%$) ECOG performance score of less than 1 in SDF TRT. There were 42 patients with a median age of 57 years, and 36 (86$\%$) ECOG performance score of less than 1 in BID TRT By radiation fractionation regimen, there were 26 in SDF TRT and 42 in BID TRT. SDF TRT consisted of 180 cGy, 5 days a week. BID TRT consisted of 150 cGy BID, 5 days a week in 13 of 42 and 120 cGy BID, in 29 of 42. And the twice daily fractions were separated by at least 4 hours. Total radiotherapy doses were between 5040 and 6940 cGy (median, 5040 cGy) in SDF TRT and was between 4320 and 5100 cGy (median, 4560 cGy) in BID TRT. Prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) was recommended for patients who achieved a CR. The recommended PCI dose was 2500 cGy/10 fractions. Chemotherapy consisted of CAV (cytoxan 1000 mg/$m^2$, adriamycin 40 mg/$m^2$, vincristine 1 mg/$m^2$) alternating with VPP (cisplatin 60 mg/$m^2$, etoposide 100 mg/$m^2$) every 3 weeks in 25 (96$\%$) of SDF TRT and in 40 (95$\%$) of BID TRT. Median cycle of chemotherapy was six in both group. Timing for chemotherapy was sequential in 23 of SDF TRT and in 3 BID TRT, and concurrent in 3 of SDF TRT and in 39 of BID TRT Follow-up ranged from 2 to 99 months (median, 14 months) in both groups. Results : Of the 26 SDF TRT, 9 (35$\%$) achieved a complete response (CR) and 14 (54$\%$) experienced a partial response (PR). Of the 42 BID TRT, 18 (43$\%$) achieved a CR and 23 (55$\%$) experienced a PR. There was no significant response difference between the two arms (p=0.119). Overall median and 2-year survival were 15 months and 26.8$\%$, respectively. The 2-year survivals were 26.9$\%$ and 28$\%$ in both arm, respectively (p=0.51). The 2-rear survivals were 35$\%$ in CR and 24.2$\%$ in PR, respectively. The grade 2 to 3 esophageal toxicities and grade 2 to 4 neutropenias were more common in BID TRT (p=0.028 0.003). There was no difference in locoregional and distant metastasis between the two arms (p=0 125 and 0.335, respectively). The most common site of distant metastasis was the brain. Conclusion : The median survival and 2-year survival were 17 months and 20.9$\%$ in SDF TRT with sequential chemotherapy, and 15 months and 28$\%$ in BID TRT with concurrent chemotherapy, respectively. We did not observe a substantial improvement of long-term survival in the BID TRT with concurrent chemotherapy compared with standard schedules of SDF TRT with sequential chemotherapy. The grade 2 to 3 esophageal toxicities and glade 2 to 4 neutropenias were more common in BID TRT with concurrent chemotherapy. Although the acute toxicities were more common in BID TRT with concurrent chemotherapy than SDF TRT with sequential chemotherapy, a concurrent chemotherapy and twice daily TRT was feasible. However further patient accrual and long-term follow up are needed to determine the potential benefits of BID TRT in limited-stage SCLC.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of $^{60}CO-{\gamma}$ irradiation on the preservation on Satauma mandarin in Cheju Island. Four varieties (S. m. early, S. m. Komezawa, S. m. Hayashi and S. m. Aoshima) were irradiated using 10,000Ci, $^{60}CO-{\gamma}$ ray with dosages of 0, 50, 100 and 150Krad. During 92 days of storage the effects of irradiation on mandarin porperties were as follows: At the end of storage period the accumulated fruit rotting percentage were S. m. Komezawa($T_2$);74.32%, S. m. early($T_1$);69.67%, S. m. Aoshima($T_4$);64.33% and S. m. Hayashi ($T_3$);61.79%. The rottings steadily increased from the early stage of storage and rapid spoilage continued after 59 days of irradiation. A high corelation existed between fruit rotting and varieties ($T_3$;Y=0.78x-15.30, $T_4$;Y=0.79x-12.29, $T_1$;Y=0.93x-9.01 and $T_2$;Y=0.79x-13.49) High dosages(100 and 150 Krad)improved fruit preservation during the mid storage stage. However 76 days after high dose irradiation there was no significant difference a rotting between irradiated fruit and the control. Irradiation decreased acidity of fruit during storage (p<0.01). The mean acidities of examined varieties were $T_1$;1.01%, $T_3$;1.01%, $T_4$;0.84% and $T_2$;0.77%. A significant differences were observed in acidity between varieties and dosages(P<0.01) With one exception in all treatments. the increase in free and total sugar content was not statestically significant. The exception was the 50 Krad treatment where the total sugar content decreased. $T_1$ and $T_4$ showed slightly higher value of than Brix $T_2$ and $T_3$, and were significantly(P<0.01) decreased by higher dosage. The ascorbic acid content in all treatments decreased with length of storage and also decreased significantly with a higher dosage.

  • The effect of gamma irradiation of microbiological and physicochemical properties of raw ingredients (thirteen kinds of protein sources) for the mixed feed were investigated. The total aerobic bacteria counts in the samples was ranged from $10^2$ to $10^7$cells/g. After 5 to 7 kGy irradiation, the total count was reduced by 3 to 4 log cycles. Coliforms were detected in seven samples and the range was from $10^4$ to $10^6$cells/g. Enteric pathogens were found only in fish meal and poultry byproduct as $10^2$ to $10^6$cells/g. They were sensitive to radiation and completely sterilized by 3 to 5 kGy irradiation. Total fungi count was ranged from $10^1$ to $10^4$cells/g in all samples. They were osmophiles such as Aspergillus, Penicillium, Cladosporium, Aureobasidium and Rhizopus and were destroyed by 3 to 7 kGy irradiation. Five species of potential mycotoxin producers including Aspergillus flavus were also identified. Physicochemical properties, such as total amino acid content, TBA value, POV and color difference showed that irradiation with optimum does was less detrimental than autoclaving.

  • In addition to tumors, normal tissues, such as the brain and myocardium can intake $^{18}F$-FDG, and the amount of $^{18}F$-FDG intake by normal tissues can be altered by the surrounding environment. Therefore, a process is necessary during which the contrasts of the tumor and normal tissues can be enhanced. Thus, this study examines the effects of glucose levels on FDG PET images of brain tissues, which features high glucose activity at all times, in small animals. Micro PET scan was performed on fourteen mice after injecting $^{18}F$-FDG. The images were compared in relation to fasting. The findings showed that the mean SUV value w as 0.84 higher in fasted mice than in non-fasted mice. During observation, the images from non-fasted mice showed high accumulation in organs other than the brain with increased surrounding noise. In addition, compared to the non-fasted mice, the fasted mice showed higher early intake and curve increase. The findings of this study suggest that fasting is important in assessing brain functions in brain PET using $^{18}F$-FDG. Additional studies to investigate whether caffeine levels and other preprocessing items have an impact on the acquired images would contribute to reducing radiation exposure in patients.

  • This study was carried out to determine the plasma vitamin $D_3$($D_3$) of 3 weeks old broiler chicks (Hubbard line), whose dorsal skin was exposed to different dose of 310 m UV light. The irradiated doses were 0~0.79 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$(6 doses$\times$5 replica=30 chicks). The blood samples were collected 2 days after exposure. The lipid in plasma isolated was extracted with ethyl acetate. The $D_3$ was purified by $C_{18}$ cartridge and analyzed by HPLC. The average $D_3$ content in plasma of control chicks was 20 ng /$m\ell$. When 0.32 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ of dose was treated, the highest amount of 43 ng /$m\ell$ was found among those of chicks experimented, corresponding to 2.15 times that of control. However, When more doses than 0.32 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were exposed to the skin, D$_3$ contents were decreased gradually. The similar to control level of $D_3$ was observed when 0.79 J/$\textrm{cm}^2$ was applied.

  • For wedged photon beams, the variation of the wedge factor with field size was reported by several authors. However, until now such variation with field size had not been explained quantitatively. Therefore, the variation of the wedge factor was investigated by measuring outputs with field sizes increasing from 4 cm $\times$ 4 cm to 25 cm $\times$ 25 cm for open and wedged 6 and 10MV X-ray beams. The relative outputs for wedged fields to 10 cm $\times$ 10 cm have been obtained. The results show the Increase of the wedge factor caused by the change in fluence of high energy Photon beam with field size, up to 8.0% for KD77-6MV X-ray beam. This increase could be explained as a linear function of the irradiated wedge volume except small field size up to about 10 cm. In the cases of the narrow rectangular beam parallel to the wedge direction, the wedge factor decreases slightly with increasing field size up to about 10-15 cm due to a relatively reduced photon fluence from the change of the wedge thickness. We could explain the causes of a wedge factor variation with field size as the fluences of primary photon passed throughout the wedge, contributing to the dose at the central beam axis and that the fluences were affected by the gradient of the wedge with the change of field size. For clinical use, the formula developed to describe the wedge factor variation with field size has been corrected.

  • Radioactive waste transport package was developed to transport eight drums of low and intermediate level waste(LILW) in accordance with the IAEA and domestic related regulations. The package is classified with industrial package IP-2. IP-2 package is required to undergo a free drop test and a stacking test. After free drop and stacking tests, it should prevent the loss or dispersal of radioactive contents, and loss of shielding integrity which would result in more than 20 % increase in the radiation level at any external surface of the package. The objective of this study is to establish the safety test method and procedure for stacking test and to prove the structural integrities of the IP-2 package. Stacking test and analysis were performed with a compressive load equal to five times the weight of the package for a period of 24 hours using a full scale model. Strains and displacements were measured at the corner fitting of the package during the stacking test. The measured strains and displacements were compared with the analysis results, and there were good agreements. It is very difficult to measure the deflection at the container base, so the maximum deflection of the container base was calculated by the analysis method. The maximum displacement at the corner fitting and deflection at the container base were less than their allowable values. Dimensions of the test model, thickness of shielding material and bolt torque were measured before and after the stacking test. Throughout the stacking test, it was found that there were no loss or dispersal of radioactive contents and no loss of shielding integrity. Thus, the package was shown to comply with the requirements to maintain structural integrity under the stacking condition.

  • High energy charged particles are trapped by geomagnetic field in the region named Van Allen Belt. These particles can move to low altitude along magnetic field and threaten even low altitude spacecraft. Space Radiation can cause equipment failures and on occasions can even destroy operations of satellites in orbit. Sun sensors aboard Science and Technology Satellite (STSAT-l) was designed to detect sun light with silicon solar cells which performance was degraded during satellite operation. In this study, we try to identify which particle contribute to the solar cell degradation with ground based radiation facilities. We measured the short circuit current after bombarding electrons and protons on the solar cells same as STSAT-1 sun sensors. Also we estimated particle flux on the STSAT-l orbit with analyzing NOAA POES particle data. Our result clearly shows STSAT-l solar cell degradation was caused by energetic protons which energy is about 700keV to 1.5MeV. Our result can be applied to estimate solar cell conditions of other satellites.
