The Effect of Ginkgo Biloba Extract on the Fractionsted Radiation Therapy in C3H Mouse Fibrosarcoma (Ginkgo Biloba Extract가 C3H 마우스 섬유육종의 분할 방사선치료에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose : A ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) has been known as a hypoxic cell radiosensitizer. Its mechanisms of action are increase of the red blood cell deformability, decrease the blood viscosity, and decrease the hypoxic cell fraction in the tumor. The aims of this study were to estimate the effect of GBE on fractionated radiotherapy and to clarify the mechanism of action of the GBE by estimating the blood flow in tumor and normal muscle. Materials and Methods : Fibrosarcoma (FSall) growing in a C3H mouse leg muscle was used as the tumor model. When the tumor size reached 7 mm in diameter, the GBE was given intraperitoneally at 1 and 25 hours prior to irradiation. The tumor growth delay was measured according to the various doses of radiation (3, 6, 9, 12 Gy and 15 Gy) and to the fractionation (single and fractionated irradiation) with and without the GBE injection. The radiation dose to the tumor the response relationships and the enhancement ratio of the GBE were measured. In addition, the blood flow of a normal muscle and a tumor was compared by laser Doppler flowmetry according to the GBE treatment. Results : When the GBE was used with single fraction irradiation with doses ranging from 3 to 12 Gy, GBE increased the tumor growth delay significantly (p<0.05) and the enhancement ratio of the GBE was 1.16. In fractionated irradiation with 3 Gy per day, the relationships between the radiation dose (D) and the tumor growth delay (TGD) were TGD $(days)=0.26{\times}D$ (Gy)+0.13 in the radiation alone group, and the TGD $(days)=0.30{\times}D$ (Gy)+0.13 in the radiation with GBE group. As a result, the enhancement ratio was 1.19 ($95\%$ confidence interval; $1.13\~1.27$). Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to measure the blood flow. The mean blood flow was higher in the muscle (7.78 mL/100 g/min in tumor and the 10.15 mL/100 g/min in muscle, p=0.005) and the low blood flow fraction (less than 2 mL/100 g/min) was higher in the tumor $(0.5\%\;vs.\;5.2\%,\;p=0.005)$. The blood flow was not changed with the GBE in normal muscle, but was increased by $23.5\%$ ( p=0.0004) in the tumor. Conclusion : Based on these results, it can be concluded that the GBE enhanced the radiation effect significantly when used with fractionated radiotherapy as well as with single fraction irradiation. Furthermore, the GBE increased the blood flow of the tumor selectively.

Derivation of the Cathodic Current Density around the HLW Canister Due to the Radiolysis of Groundwater (고준위 폐기물 처분용기 주변에서의 지하수의 방사분해에 의한 음 전류 밀도 유도)

  • The oxidizing species are generated from the radiolysis of groundwater in the pore of buffer material around the canister used for the disposal of spent fuels. A mathematical model was introduced to calculate the cathodic current density induced by the oxidant around the canister, which determined the corrosion of carbon steel. An analytical solution was derived to get the cathodic current density in the cylindrical coordinate. The cathodic current densities from both the rectangular coordinate and cylindrical coordinate were compared with each other. The source terms and absorbed dose rate for the calculation of the radiolysis were calculated using the ORIGEN2 and MCNP computer code, respectively. The radius of the canister was determined with the new model in order to prevent the local corrosion. The results showed that the new solution made the cathodic current density around 25 % lower than the Marsh model.

  • The Korean rice of Paldal variety was milled, in March, 1969, into brown rice and 92% polished one and each 1.5kg sample was packed in the kraft paper bags. With Co-60 gamma-irradiation, the samples were treated in the various ranges of 500, 800 and 1,000 Krad, and then they were stored at the room temperature. The changes of the contents of free amino acids in the samples were determined by the amino acid autoanalyzer (Yanagimoto, Japan, LC-type). The results obtained in June and October of the year were as follows. 1) In the disinfecting irradiation of rice by the higher doses of 500, 800 and 1,000 Krad, there wasn't any particular distinction between the control lot and irradiated lot in respect to the free amino acid contents. 2) The contents of free amino acids in rice during storage had the decreasing tendencies, and especially prominent in case of glutamic acid.

  • X-ray device used in the diagnosis has made possible to have more effective and accurate diagnosis, powered by the development of various devices. Based on this, X-ray device has become the most basic and essential diagnostic equipment in clinical medicine. At present, in the image acquisition field using X-ray, the use of Digital radiography which is useful in the acquisition time reduction and transfer of images and is possible to have the dose reduction has expanded. With the structure using one detector, this DR device has disadvantages in that it needs structural changes unlike existing X-ray and the detector should be moved to the desired position depending on the shooting location. Therefore, in this study, using BLDC(Brushless direct current) motor and PID(Proportional integral differential) control method, the automatic control system of 3-axis which is upward and downward, left and right and rotation of detector where having the most movement in DR was designed and produced and its performance was evaluated.

  • Dihexyloctanamide(DHOA) was used as an extractant or phase modifier with the diamide extractants in a solvent extraction process for a radioactive liquid waste treatment. The degradation compounds of the DHOA extractant, irradiated with $^{60}Co$ gamma ray, were octanoic acid and dihexylamine which are identified by a Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) and gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer(GC/MS) analysis, and determined by the GC/MS with selected ion monitoring(SIM) mode. Retention behavior of octanoic acid, tridecane (internal standard) and dihexylamine in total ion chromatogram (TIC) were 8.65 min., 9.79 min., and 10.27 min., respectively. With increasing the absorbed dose of the $\gamma$-ray irradiated DHOA, the concentration of octanoic acid was decreased and that of dihexylamine was increased.

Solution to Decrease Spatial Dose Rate in Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine through System Improvement (시스템 개선을 통한 핵의학 검사실의 공간 선량률 감소방안)

  • Objectives: This study aims at decreasing spatial dose rate through work improvement whilst spatial dose rate is the cause of increasing personal exposure dose which occurs in the process of handling radioisotope. Methods: From February 2013 until July 2013, divided into "before" and "after" the improvement, spatial dose rate in laboratory of nuclear medicine was measured in gamma image room, PET/CT-1 image room, and PET/CT-2 image room as its locations. The measurement time was 08:00, 12:00 and 17:00, and SPSS 21.0 USA was opted for its statistical analysis. Result: The spatial dose rate at distribution worktable, injection table, the entrance to the distribution room, and radioisotope storage box, which had showed high spatial dose rate, decreased by more than 43.7% a monthly average. The distribution worktable, that had showed the highest spatial dose rate in PET/CT-1 image room, dropped the rate to 42.3% as of July. The injection table and distribution worktable in the PET/CT-2 image room also showed the decline of spatial dose rate to 89% and 64.4%, respectively. Conclusion: By improving distribution process and introducing proper radiation shielding material, we were able to drop the spatial dose rate substantially at distribution worktable, injection table, and nuclide storage box. However, taking into account of steadily increasing amount of radioisotope used, strengthening radiation related regulations, and safe utilization of radioisotope, the process of system improvement needs to be maintained through continuous monitoring.

  • Ion exchange fibers, high functionalized onto hybrid polyolefine fiber's surface, were synthesized by $\gamma-ray$ mutual radiation. Degree of grafting (DG) of copolymer increased with increasing GMA monomer concentration and the maximum rate of DG was 355% at 50 GMA. The graft reaction occurred in polar solvent and DG was 190% maximum value in $1.0\times10^{-3}$ Mohr's salt and 0.1 M sulfuric acid, respectively. The amination for graft copolymers varied depending on amine reagents, and the reactivity for copolymers was highest for methylamine, and that of triethylamine lowest. It was shown that water uptake and ion exchange capacities increased with increase in the rate of amination while surface area decreased rapidly as proceeding for graft reaction and amination.

  • Radiation grafting of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine at room temperature has been studied by an impregnation method to improve the hygroscopic properties, the antistatic behavior and the dyeability of polyester fabric. Polyester fabric was impregnated with acrylic acid or aqueous emulsion of acrylic acid-4-vinylpyridine by immersion at 25$^{\circ}$or 7$0^{\circ}C$. The impregnated fabric was irradiated under nitrogen gas with ${\gamma}$-rays from Co-60. When acrylic acid grafted polyester fabric was treated with sodium carbonate, calcium acetate and potassium persulfate, tne rate of water absorption was increased and most parts of polyacrylic acid formed were extracted off from the fabric with 0.1% solution of sodium hydroxide at 10$0^{\circ}C$. In the case of the impregnation of a mixture of acrylic acid and 4-vinylpyridine the petcent of grafting has been shown to be proportional to the ratio of 4-VP/AA and radiation dost. Estimating by contact angle measurements of water on the various polymer surfaces, the antistatic behavior was decreased with the increase of grafting percent. The investigation of electron micrograph disclosed the existence of certain type of discontinuities in the acrylic acid grafted polyester fiber which was treated with various salts.

Detection of gamma irradiated South Sea cultured pearls (감마선 조사된 남양진주의 검지)

  • We have been performed on $Co^{60}$ ${\gamma}$-ray irradiation of South Sea cultured pearls, with the absorbed dose of 0.1~100 kGy at room temperature. In addition, it was investigated electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and amino acid analysis (AAA) for detection of Gamma irradiated South Sea cultured pearls. It was observed that the irradiated South Sea cultured pearls revealed additional free radical peak such as $CO_2^-$, at a g-factor of $2.001{\pm}0.002$ in EPR spectra. From the amino acid analysis (AAA), it was shown that some of amino acid in the protein of the nacre destroyed after ${\gamma}$-ray; glutamic acid residue by 11.43 %, alanine by 3.11 %, and histidine by 43.75 %. It was useful to detect the irradiated South Sea cultured pearls by EPR measurement in our study.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain basic informations on the development in sterile-male technique of rice stem borer. The species considered is Chile suppressalis Walker. Different developmental stages of the insect namely; larval, pupae and adult were irradiated with $Co^{60}$ gamma ray. The results obtained were as follows: 1) A 1:1 sex ratio in the pupal stage was observed. 2) In the pupal stage sub-lethal dosages$(LD_{50})$ were 26 KR and 26.7 KR for female and male, respectively. 3) The total number of egg masses per female increased with the increasing gamma ray dosages and average number of eggs produced per female decreased in the cross between normal female and irradiated male. 4) The sterile dosage $(SD_{90})$ of the gamma ray irradiation showed 23 KR in the male. 5) The pupal stage is most convenient developmental stage for irradiation.
