  • The Gukjeon Pb-Zn mine was recognized as skarn deposits which replaced the limestone layer of the Jeongkansan Formation by intrusion of biotite granite in late Cretaceous. The Jeongkansan Formation is mainly composed of tuffaceous shale, and interlayers of sandstone, andesitic tuff, limestone, and conglomerate. The limestone layer is located in the lower part of the Jeongkansan Formation with 6~8 m in thickness and about 500 m in length. The Gukjeon deposits are divided into the Jukgang ore bodies once mined underground and the eastern ore bodies. Main ores are sphalerite and galena, in association with small amounts of chalcopyrite, arsenopyrite, pyrite, and pyrrhotite, etc. Skarns mainly consist of clinopyroxenes and Ca-garnets, associated with actinolite, chlorite, axinite, and calcite, etc. The Jukgang ore bodies show symmetrical distribution of zoning outward, representing clinopyroxene (hedenbergite) zone, clinopyroxene-garnet (grossular) zone, garnet (andradite) zone, and alteration zone of hornfels. $Fe^{2+}$ contents in clinopyroxenes increase with decreasing sphalerite grade. Sphalerite ores are found in all zones and $Fe^{2+}$ contents in sphalerite increase in the same way as those in clinopyroxenes, implying that clinopyroxene and sphalerite are closely related each other. It is concluded that the Gukjeon ores occurred in the ore rich zone of high grade sphalerite with less pyrite in assoication with clinopyroxene.

  • The Haenam Pb-Zn skarn deposit is located at the Hwawon peninsula in the southwestern part of the Ogcheon Metamorphic Belt. The deposit is developed along the contact between limestone of the Ogcheon group and Cretaceous quartz porphyry. Petrography of ore samples, chemical composition of skarn and ore minerals, and geochemistry of the related igneous rocks were investigated to understand the characteristics of the skarn mineralization. Skarn zonation consists of garnet${\pm}$pyroxene${\pm}$calcite${\pm}$quartz zone, pyroxene+garnet+quartz${\pm}$calcite zone, calcite+pyroxene${\pm}$garnet zone, quartz+calcite${\pm}$pyroxene zone, and calcite${\pm}$chlorite zone in succession toward carbonate rock. Garnet commonly shows zonal texture comprised of andradite and grossular. Pyroxene varies from Mn-hedenbergite to diopside as away from the intrusive rock. Chalcopyrite occurs as major ore mineral near the intrusive rock, and sphalerite and galena tend to increase as going away. Electron probe microanalyses revealed that FeS contents of sphalerite become decreased from 5.17 mole % for garnet${\pm}$pyroxene${\pm}$calcite${\pm}$quartz zone to 2.93 mole %, and to 0.40 mole % for calcite+pyroxene${\pm}$garnet zone, gradually. Ag and Bi contents also decreased from 0.72 wt.% and 1.62 wt.% to <0.01 wt.% and 0.11 wt.%, respectively. Thus, the Haenam deposit shows systematic variation of species and chemical compositions of ore minerals with skarn zoned texture. The related intrusive rock, quartz porphyry, expresses more differentiated characteristics than Zn-skarn deposit of Meinert(1995), and has relatively high$SiO_2$ concentration of 72.76~75.38 wt.% and shows geochemical features classified as calc-alkaline, peraluminous igneous rock and volcanic arc tectonic setting.

  • In order to select the proper collector for the flotation of malachite, we had floated malachite by using various collectors. When measuring the zeta potential of malachite, we knew that the point of zero charge of malachite is found at pH 8.2 and malachite particles are negatively charged above this pH value; and positively, below this pH value. The floatability of malachite by the anionic collectors like sodium oleate and Aeropromoter 845, was about 97% in pH 5~11 range, whereas that of malachite by alkyl hydroxamate and the cationic collector like dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and dodecyl ethyl methyl ammonium chloride, was below 15% above pH 5 regardless of dosage increase of collector and flotation time. The malachite sulphidised by $(NH_4)_2S$ was floated above 97% by potassium amyl xanthate. The dosage of potassium amyl xanthate decreased and the flotation period shortened to one third than when it was not sulphidised by $(NH_4)_2S$. Therefore, potassium amyl xanthate and the anionic collectors like sodium oleate and Aeropromoter 845 can be used as the collector of malachite.

  • Recently, the use of the high strength materials and development of construction techniques have resulted in more flexible and longer spanning in the stadium systems. So the natural frequency of stadium structures are became low. Stadium stand could be led to significant dynamic response as like resonance due to spectator rhythmical activities. The accurate analysis of dynamic behavior of stadium systems and the precise investigation of the dynamic loads on stadium structures are demanded for effective design. It is desirable to apply measured dynamic loads created by spectator activities because these dynamic loads are not easy to express numerical formula. As the floor mesh of stadium stand is refined, the number of divided elements increases in numerical analysis. the rise of the number of elements makes the numbers of nodal points increased and numerous computer memory required. So it is difficult to analysis refine full model of stadium structures by using the commercial programs. In this study, the various dynamic loads induced by spectator movements are measured and analyzed. And a new modeling method that reduce the nodal points are introduced. Vibration analysis of stadium stands is executed to inspect accuracy and efficiency of proposed method in this paper.

  • In this study, hydration properties of ordinary Portland cement were examined, shown from a limestone and blast furnace slag alone or their mixture up to 10% as a minor mineral additives. As of setting time, it was identified that final setting became faster as the amount of limestone mixture increased, which showed limestone accelerated early hydration faster than blast furnace slag. This is because limestone did accelerate the hydration of alite. At the age of 3 days, limestone 5%-blast furnace slag 5% mixture had the highest compressive strength of mortar. It is because hydration acceleration of alite by limestone, and $Ca(OH)_2$ that was additionally formed by hydration acceleration of alite reacted with blast furnace slag, and as a result, additionally created C-S-H hydrate. Regarding the hydration properties by the age of 7 and 28 days, limestone 3%-blast furnace slag 7% of composited mixture showed the largest compressive strength, and in comparison with the 3 days in curing age. This period is when hydration reaction of blast furnace slag is active and the amount of hydrate depends on the amount of blast furnace slag mixture more than that of the limestone mixture. And in order to vitalize hydration reaction of blast furnace slag the amount of $Ca(OH)_2$ created has to increase, and thus, a small amount of limestone is necessary that can accelerate the hydration of alite. Therefore, after the age of 7 days, the fact that there were a large amount of blast furnace slag mixture and small amount of limestone mixture was effective to the strength development of ordinary Portland cement.

  • KAERI Underground Research Tunnel (KURT) was recently constructed through the site investigation from the yea. of 2003 at KAERI site, Dukjin-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon city. The geo-logic setting of the site has been slightly metamorphosed. There are small fractures developed in the rock and several kinds of secondary filling minerals exist in the fractures. We examined mineralogical characteristics of fracture-filling calcite, which is not only largely distributed, but also can significantly affect the radionuclides migration. The calcite is found along fractures like other secondary minerals, forming thick veins in part. Most calcite-filled fractures contain quartz, iron oxides, and dolomite as minor minerals. The calcite crystals show an characteristic appearance with an uniformly oriented growth, coated with goethite on the edge and the etch-pit sites of their surface. Some calcite crystals have been newly formed by the precipitation of elements dissolved from the tunnel shotcrete wall, and their morphology changed according to the chemistry and flow of groundwater. The calcite can modify the groundwater chemistry and significantly affect the sorption behavior of radionuclides. The characteristic crystal structure and surface morphology of the calcite examined in the KURT site will be used as important basic data for the radionuclide migration experiment in the future.

  • An experimental study of iron-aluminium partitioning between synthetic garnet and synthetic epidote was carried out, as equilibrium was maintained in the exchange reaction expressed as follows : $Ca_3Fe_2Si_3O_12\+\2\Ca_2Al_2AlSi_3O_12$(0H) = $Ca_3Al_2Si_3O_12\+\Ca_2Al_2FeSi_3O_12$(0H) Temperature has a pronounced effect on the distribution of Fe and A1 between the minerals. However, the pressure effect is not so drastic as in the exchange reaction. With increasing temperature, $Fe^{+3}$ becomes redistributed from garnet into epidote, whereas A1 becomes redistributed from epidote into garnet. This is in line with the general principle of phase correspondence, as the temperature increases the more electropositive metal aluminium redistributes from epidote into garnet. The agreement between the experimental results of this study and the natural samples suggests that $K_D=X^{Ep}_{Fe}/X^{Gr}_{Fe}$ may be a useful geothermometer for metamorphic rocks containing garnet and epidote that are close to binary Fe-A1 compounds.

  • Mineral medicines are single or mixtures of minerals and rocks which have been used to treat disease. Recently, their application has been increased by emphasizing the physical properies of the medicines, in addition to their chemical properies. In this study, mineralogical, chemical, spectroscopic and magnetic properties were measured using X-ray diffraction analysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, Ff-Infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass magnetic susceptibility. Experiments were done using these properties to evaluate application of traditional mineral medicines such as Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok. Mineralogical study proves that Yanggiseok, generally known as tremolite, consists of actinolite. Yeonok for medical usage mostly consists of fine grained tremolite. Eumgiseok is mainly composed of vermiculite and minor kaolinite and halloysite. Yeonok and Yanggiseok, belong to the amphibole group among inosilicates and both have similar emission power properties. The intensity of emission power, calculated from FT-IR measurements, follows in the order of Yeonok, Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok at 40$^{\circ}$C and Yanggiseok, Yeonok and Eumgiseok in such order at 150$^{\circ}$C. As a result of NMR analysis after 20 days in distilled water, the three mineral medicines decreased in the following order; Eumgiseok, Yanggiseok and Yeonok. However, the same minerals decreased in the order of Eumgiseok, Yeonok and Yanggiseok after 80 days. In response temperature, magnetic susceptibility of Yanggiseok and Eumgiseok systematically increased by heating to 25$^{\circ}$C, 100$^{\circ}$C and 700$^{\circ}$C. Magnetic susceptibility of Yeonok shows a decreasing pattern due to heating.

  • This study examines the mineralogy of sepiolites occurred within the carbonaceous rocks of Songak schist and Pyeongtaek migmatitic gneiss of Precambrian Seosan group, in the western part of Chungnam. Host rocks of the sepiolite were dolomitic rocks and have experienced hydrothermal alteration and metamorphism. Mesozoic granite is assumed as a main source of hydrothermal alteration for the dolomitic rocks. Some of the tremolite asbestos coexist with the sepiolites. Representative sepiolite and tremolite samples were collected from the layers cracks or fractures of the dolomitic rocks and/or examined with microscope with microscope, XRD, SEM and TEM. Sepiolites are mainly recognized along the cracks assumed as pathways of hydrothermal solution. Tremolites are mainly found at layers or cracks of the dolomitic rocks and occur as asbestos as well as non-asbestos forms. It was confirmed that some of the tremolite asbestos were coexisted with the sepiolites. Overall results suggest that the occurrences of sepiolites within the dolomitic rocks mainly result in the hydrothermal alteration and the fluid from the acidic rocks, possibly granites. It also suggests that coexisting tremolite asbestos were formed by similar geological environment.

  • The effect of calcite and gypsum on the hydration of Portland cement was investigated using GEM-PSI, a geochemical model. Addition of calcite and gypsum up to 5 wt% of total cement clinker into Portland cement was found to influence the hydrate assemblage of the hydrated cement in different ways. The results of geochemical modelling showed that the fraction of calcium monocarbonate increased by the hydration of cement with the increase of calcite addition. The results of modelling also indicated that gypsum increased the fraction of ettringite in the assemblage of hydrated cement as the amount of gypsum added increases. This study showed that porosity generated by the hydration of cement had a significant relation with the amount of calcite and gypsum added. The porosity of hydrated cement was lower when calcite added up to 3 wt% of cement clinker compared to the hydrated cement with the same amount of gypsum addition. However, when calcite added more than 3% of cement clinker, the porosity of hydrated cement were higher than that of hydrated cement with the same amount of gypsum addition.
