Characteristics of Heavy Minerals in the South East Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) and South West Cheju Island Mud (SWCIM) (황해남동니질대와 제주남서니질대 표층퇴적물의 중광물 특성 비교 연구)

  • Heavy mineral provide an important information for sediment provenance as well as a potential submarine mineral resources. We compared the heavy mineral characteristics between Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) and Southwestern Cheju Island Mud (SWCIM) surface sediments. We separated heavy minerals from 28 surface sediments in each mudbelt, and then carried out stereo-microscopic, field-emission scanning electron microscopic, energy dispersive spectroscopic and electron probe microanalysis to characterize the type, abundance, mineralogical properties and distribution pattern of heavy mineral. Amphibole and epidote, which are two major heavy minerals, account for more than 70% of total heavy minerals. Zircon and sphene contents are more abundant in SEYSM, whereas apatite and rutile contents are more abundant in SWCIM. Monazite only occurs in some area of SEYSM. Sphene and monazite content decrease to the south in SEYSM. Both garnet-zircon index (GZi) and rutile-zircon index (RuZi) are low in SEYSM but high in SWCIM. Amphiboles in SEYSM primarily correspond to hornblende, however those in SWCIM represent variable composition from pargasite, tshermakite, hornblende to tremolite. Garnets in SEYSM have high Mg and low Ca, but those in SWCIM have low Mg with variable Ca. Different heavy mineral characteristics between SEYSM and SWCIM suggests that sediments in each mudbelt have different provenances. Although this study implies that SEYSM sediment may mostly come from nearby Korean western rivers such as the Keum and Han rivers, this study does not suggest any idea of the source area of SWCIM sediment. Further study is needed to interpret the provenance and transportation mechanism of mudbelt sediments through the heavy mineral research for the river sediments flowing into the Yellow Sea and much more marine sediments.

A Study on the Metamorphism of Gneisses in the Northern Gohung Area, Chonnam (전라남도 고흥 북부지역에 분포하는 편마암류의 변성작용에 관한 연구)

  • In northern Gohung granitic gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and migmatitic gneiss are widely distributed. Gneisses were plotted in granodiorite domain on an lUGS silica-alkali diagram. The amounts of trace elements (Li, Zn, Sc, Sr, Ni, V Y etc.) vs. $SiO_2$, somewhat decreased. Plagioclase showed a wide compositional range ($An_{32-48}$). $X_{alm}$ and $X_{sps}$ were higher in garnet rim and $X_{pyp}$ in garnet core. The rocks in the study area were formed from S and I-type magmas which generated from syn-collision and the late to post-orogenic tectonic environment. Metamorphic P-T conditions u·ere low to medium pressure, high temperature (803-913$^{\circ}C$, 6.1-7.3 kb) and overprinted by retrograde metamorphism (570-726$^{\circ}C$, 2.2-5.1 kb) and chloritization.

Screening of Antibacterial Activity from Hot Water Extracts of Indigenous Plants (자생식물 열수추출액의 항균효능 검색)

  • Hot water extracts of 141 indigenous plants were screened for antibacterial activity against 7 Gram (+) and 12 Gram (-) bacteria by agar diffusion method. Of the 141 plants tested, 55 showed antibacterial activity against one or more species of Gram (+) bacteria and especially extracts of Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Alnus firma (Betulaceae), Geranium thunbergii (Geraniaceae), Lagerstroemia indica (Lythraceae) showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity on over 6 strains. Of the 141 plants tested, 45 showed antibacterial activity against one or more species of Gram (-) bacteria and especially extracts of Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Punica granatum (Lythraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Schizandra chinensis Baillon (Magnoliaceae), Alnus firma (Betulaceae), Alnus hirsuta (Betulaceae), Magnolia kobus (Magnoliaceae) showed broad spectrum antibacterial activity on over 8 strains. The most active antibacterial plants were Oenothera stricta Ledebour (Onagraceae), Punica granatum (Lythraceae), Quercus variabilis Blume (Fagaceae), Schizandra chinensis Baillon (Magnoliaceae) which are edible as permitted by Korea Food & Drug Adminstration. With in-depth research, the hot water extracts of these plants can be applied as food preservatives and alternatives of antimicrobials for livestock feeds.

Metamorphic evolution of granitic and porphyroblastic gneisses in the Seungju-Suncheon area, the southwestern part of the Sobacksan Massif (소백산 육괴 서남부인 승주-순천 일대의 화강암질 편마암과 반상변정질 편마암의 변성진화과정)

  • Granitic and pophyroblastic gneisses are widely distributed in the Seungju-Suncheon area, the southwestern part of the Sobacksan Massif. Two groups of metamorphic P-T conditions are recognized from granitic gneiss. $622-760^{\circ}C/6.2~7.4\;kbar$(Group I) are estimated from garnet cores and samples with weak retrograde metamorphism. $606~785^{\circ}C/3.7~5.4\;kbar$(Group II) are estimated from garnet rims which have lower pyrope and higher spessartine contents due to the effect of retrograde metamorphism. The metamorphic P-T conditions estimated from porphyroblastic gneiss are $489~669^{\circ}C$, 2.1~4.8 kbar which are similar to the P-T conditions of Group II in the granitic gneiss. The whole rock-garnet Sm/Nd isotopic ages determined from granitic and porphyroblastic gneisses are, respectively, $1417{\pm}52\;Ma\;and\;1421{\pm}14\;Ma$. These date indicate that intermediate-P/T type metamorphism represented by Group I may have occurred between the intrusion of granite gneiss and the intrusion of porphyroblastic gneiss(between 1890 Ma~2120 Ma) and two gneisses experienced low-P/T type metamorphism after the intrusion of porphyroblastic gneiss at 1417~1421 Ma.

Metamorphism of gneiss complex in the Paju-Gimpo area, northwestern Gyeonggi massif, Korea (경기육괴 북서부의 파주-김포지역에 분포하는 편마암복합체의 변성작용)

  • Proterozoic gneisss complex of the Paju-Gimpo area, Northwestern Gyeonggi Massif, consists of mainly gneiss and schist with locally intercalated quartzite and metamorphic calcareous rocks. Mineral assemblages of the gneiss and schist are classified into two type: sillimanite free (garnet zone) and sillimanite bearing (sillimanite zone) assemblages. In the Goyang area, Kyanite occurs as metastable relict grain in two gneiss samples, in which sillimanite, garnet, biotite, K-feldspar and plagioclase occur. Cordierite bearing mineral assemblages of gneiss are biotite+garnet+sillimanite+cordierite+plagioclase+quartz ($\pm$K-feldspar, muscovite), and represent the upper amphibolite or granulite facies metamorphism. The metamorphic complex has experienced two different regional metamorphism. The prograde metamorphism is a medium-pressure type characteries by kyanite. The peak metamorphic P-T condition of the prograde metamorphism calculated from the kyanite bearing rock is 7.0~9.4 kb and $718~778^{\circ}C$. The retrograde metamorphism, after the prograde metamorphism, is the low-pressure type characteries by occurrence of cordierite. The peak metamorphic P-T condition of later calculated from the cordierite bearing rock is 3.6~5.5 kb and $750~889^{\circ}C$. Together with the occurrence of relict kyanite, garnet+biotite+plagioclase assemblage as relict in the cordierite, and the result of estimated P-T metamorphic conditions indicate a clockwise P-T path.

지질시대 및 지구조별 국내대리석 석재자원의 분류와 물성

  • 국내 대리석류 석재자원은 지질시대 및 지구조별로 선캠브리아기의 경기육괴와 영남육괴, 시대미상의 옥천대 남서부, 캠브리아-오오도비스기의 옥천대 북동부 그리고 일부 기하시대의 옥천대 북동부 등으로 분류될 수 있다. 전자는 변성퇴적암류내에 협재된 결정질 석회암, 화강암질 편마암내 포획된 결정질 석회암 등s으로 경기육괴의 포천, 김포, 온수리, 목계와 신림도폭 그리고 영남육괴의 춘양, 현동, 울진, 중평동 장기리와 장계도폭 등이 해당된다. 시대미상암류는 옥천대 남서부로서 목계 충주 괴산, 강경, 남원과 송정도폭, 그리고 캠브리아기는 풍촌석회암으로 임계, 호명, 서벽리도폭 등이 해당된다. 오오도비스기는 정선석회암이 분포하는 석병산, 평창, 정선과 임계도폭, 화천리층이 분포하는 문경도폭, 그리고 황강리도폭 등이 해당한다. 기타시대는 시대미상의 각력질 석회암과 상부석탄기의 홍점층군내 협재하는 결정질 석회암으로 이들은 각각 정선도폭과 석병산도폭에 위치한다. 선캠브리아기, 시대미상, 캠브리아기 및 오오도비스기 대리석류의 물성 중에서 흡수율과 공극율은 선캠브리아기, 오오도비스기 시대미상과 캠브리아기의 순으로 점차 감소한다 이들의 공극율은 비중에 대하여 대체로 불규칙하며, 흡수율은 공극율에 대하여 거의가 뚜렷한 정의 상관관계를 이룬다. 압축강도는 공극율에 대하여 다소 불규칙한, 그리고 인장강도에 대하여 정의 상관관계를 이룬다. 그리고 마모경도는 압축강도와 인장강도에 대하여 대체로 뚜렷한 정의 경향을 각각 보인다. 이들 대리석류는 선캠브리아기 중경암-경암, 시대미상 중경암-경암, 캠브리아기 거의가 중경암-경암, 그리고 오오도비스기는 경암에 각각 해당한다.역할을 충실히 담당하고 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 그러나 과학기술의 급격한 발달, 소비패턴의 변화, 생활환경과 삶의 질을 중시하는 새로운 가치관의 확산 등으로 광업의 역할도 새로운 변화의 전기를 맞이하고 있음을 볼 수 있다. 국내광업이 21C 급변하는 산업환경에 적응하여 생존하기 위해서는 각종 첨단산업에서 요구하는 소량 다품종의 원료광물을 적기에 공급 할 수 있는 전문화된 기술력을 하루속히 확보해야 하며, 이를 위해 고품위의 원료광물 확보를 위한 탐사 및 개발을 적극 추진하고 가공기술의 선진화를 위해 선진국과의 기술제휴 등 자원산업 글로벌화 정책이 절실히 요구되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 삶의 질을 향상시키려는 현대인의 가치관에 부합하기 위해서는 각종 소비제품의 원료를 제공하는 광업의 본래 목적 이외에도 자연환경 훼손을 최소화하며 개발 할 수밖에 없는 구조적인 어려움에 직면할 수밖에 없다. 이처럼 국내광업이 안고 있는 여러 가지 난제들을 극복하기 위해서는 업계와 정부가 합심하여 국내광업 육성의 중요성을 재인식하고 새로운 마음가짐으로 관련 정책을 수립 일관성 있게 추진해 나가야 할 것으로 보인다.의 연구 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 브랜드 이미지와 서비스 품질과의 관계에서 브랜드이미지는 서비스 품질의 선행변수가 될 수 있음을 증명하였으며 4개 요인의 이미지 중 사풍이미지를 제외한 영업 이미지, 제품 이미지, 마케팅 이미지가 서비스 품질에 영향을 미치고 있음을 알 수 있다. 둘째, 지각된 서비스 품질과 가격 수용성과의 관계에서, 서비스 품질은 최소 가격에 신뢰서비스 요인에서 정의 영향을 미치고 있으나 부가서비스, 환경서비스에서는 역의 영향을

Gemological Studies on Garnet from Madagascar, Africa (아프리카 마다가스카르산 석류석에 대한 보석광물학적 연구)

  • The Madagascar garnets wear mainly found as a porphyroblast in gneiss and classified into rhodolite, purple almandine, and brown almandine based on compositional characteristics and color. UV-visible analysis strong absorption bands, 400, 428, 504, 521, and 572 nm, were observed for rhodolite and purple almandine, and main absorption bands of 433 and 502 nm observed for brown almandine. For FT-IR analysis a strong absorption band of $640\;cm^{-1}$ was observed for rhodolite, two strong bands of 628 and $651\;cm^{-1}$ observed for brown almandine, and two weak absorption bands of 635 and $653\;cm^{-1}$ observed for purple almandine. Single distinct absorption band, $3552\;cm^{-1}$, was observed only for rhodolite. It is possible to distinguish rhodolite from purple or brown almandine by considering overall characteristics of the rhodolite such as color, RI, UV-visible absorption, FTIR absorption etc.

Skarnization and Fe Mineralization at the Western Orebody in the Manjang Deposit, Goesan (만장광상 서부광체의 철스카른화 작용 및 생성환경)

  • The Manjang deposit is emplaced in Hwajeonri formation comprising limestone that is interbeded with slate and phyllite in the central Okcheon Group. It consists of the Main and the Central orebody of Cu-bearing hydrothermal vein deposit and the Western orebody of iron skarn deposit. Based on coexisting mineral assemblage the skarnization can be divided into prograde skarnization (stage I : clinopyroxene ${\pm}$ magnetite ${\pm}$ quartz, stage II : garnet + clinopyroxene ${\pm}$ magnetite ${\pm}$ quartz) and retrograde hydrothermal alteration (stage III: magnetite + amphibole + quartz ${\pm}$ garnet ${\pm}$ clinopyroxene ${\pm}$ chlorite ${\pm}$ epidote ${\pm}$ fluorite ${\pm}$ calcite, stage IV: fluorite ${\pm}$ pyrrhotite ${\pm}$ chalcopyrite ${\pm}$ amphibole ${\pm}$ quartz ${\pm}$ calcite). Diopside is abundant in stage I, and hedenbergite was produced in stage II and III. Garnet compositions change from grandite to andradite, which suggests a redox transition from relatively reduced to oxidized condition during the skarn formation. Magnetite in stage I and II has relatively constant Fe contents, while in the stage III it has increased Si and Ca concentrations. This variation could indicate that magnetite was more strongly affected by host rocks during the retrograde stage. Sulfur isotope compositions of pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite produced in stage IV are within the range of + 5.9~6.9 ‰, corresponding to igneous origin, but slightly high sulfur isotope values could be attributed to an interaction with host rocks, limestone.

Relation between Metamorphic P-T Conditions and Boron Concentrations of Metasedimentary Rocks and Biotite Granitic Gneisses from NE Yeongnam Massif around Samcheok Area, South Korea (영남 육괴 북동부 변성퇴적암과 흑운모 화강편마암의 변성 온도-압력 조건과 전압 붕소 함량사이의 상관관계)

  • This study is focused on the relationship between whole rock boron contents and metamorphic P-T conditions of metasedimentary rocks from northeastern Yeongnam massif around Samcheok area, Korea. Metamorphic P-T conditions of sillimanite and garnet zones based on the Ti-biotite geothermometer is 553-687$^{\circ}C$ and 582-722$^{\circ}C$ at 4-6 kbar, respectively. In the metasedimentary rocks, boron contents in whole rock decrease with increasing metamorphic grade, from sillimanite zone (9.60-189 ppm B) to garnet zone (2.63-15.97 ppm B), except one sample (90.9 ppm B) from garnet zone containing graphites. Boron depletion in garnet zone has relation with mode of tourmaline which are broken down with increasing metamorphic temperature. Boron contents are indirectly proportional to major and trace elements such as $Al_2O_3$, MgO, $Fe_2O_3$, $K_2O$, Li, Ba, Sc, Co, Cr, Rb and Cs that are abundant in tourmalines. In conclustion, tourmalines and graphite are modulator of boron contents in metasedimentary rocks. In the biotite granitic gneisses, boron contents (2.62-12.2 ppm B) are similar or lower than those of metasedimentary rocks and have no relation with metamorphic P-T conditions.

High-pressure amphibolite of the Imjingang belt in the Yeoncheon-Cheongok area (연천-전곡 지역에 분포하는 임진강대의 고압 각섬암)

  • In order to characterize the petrogenesis of the E-W trending Imjinganag belt, we studied the metamorphic rocks of the Yeoncheon Group near its type locality, Yeoncheon - Cheongok area, belonging to the southern part of this fold-thrust belt. The Samgot Formation of the Yeoncheon Group consists of calc-silicate and metapsammitic rocks together with amphibolite and amphibole gneiss. Layers of these metamorphic rocks concordantly occur in a wide area with its length greater than 15 km along their strike direction. Major mineral assemblages of the amphibolite are hornblende + plagioclase ${\pm}$ garnet ${\pm}$ diopside ${\pm}$ biotite ${\pm}$ quartz. Accessory rutile and ilmenite are characteristically replaced by titanite. Metamorphic temperatures and pressures estimated from the garnet - hornblende - plagioclase - quartz geothermo-barometers are 632-$736^{\circ}C$ and 7.9-11.1 kbar, respectively. Thus, the regional metamorphism of the study area belongs to the upper amphibolite facies. Furthermore, Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr data of garnet, plagioclase, and whole rock of an amphibolite define mineral isochrons of $231{\pm}30$ Ma and $222{\pm}24$ Ma, respectively, suggesting the Triassic metamorphism. These results are consistent with P-T conditions and metamorphic ages reported in the Shandong Peninsula, and support the hypothesis that the Chinese collision belt may extend into the Imjingang belt in the Korean Peninsula.
