19세기 아편전쟁에 참가했던 중국 학자의 한사람이었던 위원은 '해국도지'라는 책을 통해 서양기술을 우리나라에 처음 전해준 사람이다. 대원군때 전해온 이 책은 우리 선조들에게 서양기술의 교과서처럼 활용되었다. 아편전쟁을 치르면서 나라를 막고 지키자는 생각을 하는 사람들과는 다르게 '서양을 배워 서양을 이기자'는 구호를 내건 위원은 '해국도지'라는 책을 통해 서양의 대포와 군함 그리고 서양의 역법, 망원경 만드는 법, 서양의 천문학에 이르기까지 여러가지 과학내용을 담고 있다.

서양뒤영벌(Bombus terrestis)과 꿀벌(Apis melltfera)의 시설참외에서 화분 매개특성을 조사한 결과, 봉종별 방화활동에서 서양뒤영벌 일벌은 10시, 서양뒤영벌 수벌과 꿀벌은 12시에 방화활동 정점에 도달하였다. 암꽃 선호시간은 서양뒤영벌 일벌, 꿀벌 그리고 서양뒤영벌 수벌은 각각 10시, 12시 그리고 14-16시에 가장 높았다. 봉군 투입 후 서양뒤영벌 일벌과 꿀벌은 각각 2일과 5일째부터 정상적인 방화활동을 시작하여 24일간 정상적인 활동을 하였으나 서양뒤영벌 수벌은 3차례의 심한 기복이 있는 불안정한 방화활동을 보였다. The Enlightenment period (1876~1910) of Joseon was the age of turbulence in terms of introduction of the Western science and technology. The interaction of modern and oriental science in the enlightenment period can be got insights from the records of Westerners. This study especially focuses to the viewpoints of Western visitors toward the weather and climate of the Korean peninsula. As a result, there are three characteristics in Westerners' awareness of Korean climate: quantitative records using numeric; interpretation of weather in the system of the modern science; and the distinct records about rainfall. In conclusion, from these result, it can be suggested that the Western visitors systematically grasped the climate of Korean peninsula.

연구의 목적은 의류생산에 있어서 동양(Oriental women)과 서양여자(Caucasian women: U.S.A)의 인체계측에 의한 치수의 비교를 하였다. 연구자료는 동양여자 100명과 서양여자 970명의 자료로 비교하였다. 동양여자의 인체계측치는 1981년 4월 일본에서 필자에 의해 수집되고 서양여자의 인체계측치는 1976년 11월부터 1977년 2월 미국(U.S.A by the Quartermaster Corps of the United States Army)에서 인체계측을 한 자료이다. 동양과 서양여자의 인체계측치 중에서 각각 32항목을 선출하여 비교된 것은 높이항목과 길이항목(height-related measurements; height and length), 나비항특(surface measurements; breadth and depth) , 둘레항목(measurement of circumference)이다. 32항목을 평균치의 t-test로 동양인과 서양인을 비교한 결과, 모든 항목에서 P<.001 수준에서 유의한 차를 보였다. 그 중에서 머리둘레, 목둘레, 손목둘레, 팔굼치둘레, 손바닥둘레의 항목에서는 동양인이 서양인에 비해서 큰 값을 나타냈다. 그 외에 27개 항목은 동양인이 전부 높거나, 길거나, 또는 큰 값을 나타냈다. 표준편차에서 보이는 바와 같이 서양인자가 동양여자보다 크고, 특히 높이 항목, 길이항목(height-related measurements)이 더 높거나 길다. 이러한 결과로서 동양과 서양여자의 인종적인 측면에서, 다양한 의류생산에 있어서 고려해야 할 것 같다. 이 동양과 서양여자의 인체계측비교에 중요한 요점을 두고 연구한 것은 의류생산과정에 있어서, size설정, 보다 미적인 design, 의복구성을 위한 등등에 고려되겠으나, 특히 미국과 같은 대량생산국에서 동양과의 무역(import or export)에 있어서 중요하게 고려가 될것이며, 나날이 발전하는 우리나라의 의류무역에도 고려되리라 본다. 뒤에 recommendations for future research에서 말한 바와 같이 서양과 한국여자의 입체계측비교를 하며 우리나라의 의류무역(수출)에 도움이 되었으면 한다.

미국인인 J.L.Boots(1894-1983)는 한국에 선교사로 파견되어 1940년에 서양인으로는 처음으로 한국의 음악과 악기를 세계에 영어로 소개하였다. 당시 급속하게 밀려오는 서양 음악의 소용돌이 속에 한국 전통음악의 중요성과 전승의 필요성을 알리고자 부츠는 이 논문이 서술했으며, 아직까지도 이 논문이 한국음악계에 소개된 적이 없어, 필자는 영어로 된 자료를 번역하고, 분석하여 외부자인 서양인의 시각에서 쓰여진 한국의 음악과 악기에 대하여 살펴보았다. 이 논문은 서양인인 부츠의 한국음악에 대한 관점과 현 한국음악계의 시각을 비교하여 관찰한 논문이다.

This study was conducted to create a digital archive for local cultural contents compiled from the records of westerners who stayed in Korea during the Enlightenment Period of Chosun. The compiled information were gathered from 22 records, and 10 main subjects, 40 sub-subjects and 239 mini-subjects were derived through the subject classification scheme. Item analysis was conducted through 38 metadata and input data types were classified and databased in Excel. Finally, a web-based digital archiving system was developed for searching and providing information through various access points. Suggestions for future research were made to expand archive contents through continuous excavation of westerners' records, to build an integrated information system of Korean digital archives incorporating individual archive systems, to develop standardization of classification schemes and a multidimensional classification system considering facet structure in cultural heritage areas, to keep consistency of contents through standardization of metadata format, and to build ontology using semantic search functions and data mining functions.

This article observed the development and characteristics of Western music competitions that were held in Korea during the years of 1932 to 1942. Observations of Western music competitions from the years 1932 to 1942, categorized into the years of 1932 to 1933, 1934, 1935 to 1936, and 1937 to 1942 were made and changes in the number of times held, participants, and objectives were looked into. Some Western music competitions displayed characteristics such as the introduction of test pieces, expanded participant categories, flexible application of award rules, and increased winner activities. This article revealed other aspects of Western music competitions held in Korea during the Japanese Colonial Era and it is hoped that it will spark new discussions on Western music competitions during that time.
