Abundance and Occupancy of Forest Mammals at Mijiang Area in the Lower Tumen River (두만강 하류 밀강 지역의 산림성 포유류 풍부도와 점유율)

  • The forest in the lower Tumen River serves as an important ecosystem spanning the territories of North Korea, Russia, and China, and it provides habitat and movement corridors for diverse mammals, including the endangered Amur tiger (Panthera tigris) and Amur leopard (Panthera pardus). This study focuses on the Mijiang area, situated as a potential ecological corridor connecting North Korea and China in the lower Tumen River, playing a crucial role in conserving and restoring the biodiversity of the Korean Peninsula. This study aimed to identify mammal species and estimate their relative abundance, occupancy, and distribution based on the 48 camera traps installed in the Mijiang area from May 2019 to May 2021. The results confirmed the presence of 18 mammal species in the Mijiang area, including large carnivores like tigers and leopards. Among the dominant mammals, four species of ungulates showed high occupancy and detection rates, particularly the Roe deer (Capreolus pygargus) and Wild boar (Sus scrofa). The roe deer was distributed across all areas with a predicted high occupancy rate of 0.97, influenced by altitude, urban residential areas, and patch density. Wild boars showed a predicted occupancy rate of 0.73 and were distributed throughout the entire area, with factors such as wetland ratio, grazing intensity, and spatial heterogeneity in aspects of the landscape influencing their occupancy and detection rates. Sika deer (Cervus nippon) exhibited a predicted occupancy rate of 0.48, confined to specific areas, influenced by slope, habitat fragmentation diversity affecting detection rates, and the ratio of open forests impacting occupancy. Water deer (Hydropotes inermis) displayed a very low occupancy rate of 0.06 along the Tumen River Basin, with higher occupancy in lower altitude areas and increased detection in locations with high spatial heterogeneity in aspects. This study confirmed that the Mijiang area serves as a habitat supporting diverse mammals in the lower Tumen River while also playing a crucial role in facilitating animal movement and habitat connectivity. Additionally, the occupancy prediction model developed in this study is expected to contribute to predicting mammal distribution within the disrupted Tumen River basin due to human interference and identifying and protecting potential ecological corridors in this transboundary region.

Suitability Selection on Habitable Environments of Corbicula Japonica in the Songji Lagoon by GIS (GIS를 이용한 송지호 재첩서식의 적지선정)

  • In this paper, we describe a method for the suitability selection on habitable environments of Corbicula Japonica in the Songji Lagoon. Acquired data by in-situ measurements analysed in applying GIS. In order to identify the characteristics of environment in Songji Lagoon, water temperature, salinity, Dissolved Oxygen, and PO4-P were used. This study is expected to use the basic data for Corbicula Japonica breeding in similar lagoon environments.

  • 하천의 상류부터 하류까지 통합적이고 유기적인 수질관리를 통해 모든 생명에 젖줄이 될 수 있는 하천환경을 조성하는 방안을 모색하고 가용 수자원의 효율적 활용을 통해 건천화된 영산강의 유량을 풍부하게 하는 한편, 이상강우에 대비한 고품격 하천설계로 재해로부터 안전한 하천으로 역할을 수행할 수 있는 방안을 강구할 필요가 있다. 더욱 생물의 서식지를 복원하고 단절된 하천을 연계하여 BLUE-GREEN 네트워크를 형성하고 하천의 생물다양성을 증진하여 많은 동 식물들이 활동하고 서식하는 생태적으로 건전한 하천으로 조성하는 방안과 마한 및 백제문화의 산물인 영산강 유역의 역사유적과 황금박쥐 서식처 등과 같은 환경자원을 발굴 연계하여 미래지향적인 지역문화를 재창조하는 방안을 모색할 필요가 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 미래지향적 인 지역문화를 창조하고 하천의 생물다양성을 증진하기 위해 가장 우선시 되어야 할 수질개선을 위해 영산강 유역에서 가장 시급한 문제점을 발굴하고 맑고 문제점 해결을 위한 대안을 설정하여 수질모델을 이용하여 대안에 따른 수질모델을 이용하여 수질개선 효과를 분석하였다.

  • 수리모델링은 유사나 유사량에 따른 하상의 변화를 구현하고 예측하는데 활용하고 있다. 만약 수리모델링을 하천의 생태적 구조나 기능과 연계하여 해석할 수 있다면, 수리학적 모델의 활용 가능성은 무궁무진해 질 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 동일한 시기의 항공사진 영상과 하천단면 자료를 활용한 수리모델링 모의 결과를 이용하여 서식처 구조를 각각 분류하고, 비교 검토하여 수리모델링 모의 결과에서의 서식처 분류 방안을 제안한다. 대상지는 한국의 금강 지류인 갑천 약 2 km 구간이며, 2012년도의 항공사진과 Nays2D모델을 이용한다. 서식처는 여울, 소, 사주 위 웅덩이, 사주부 정수역(backwater) 등으로 구분한다.

Assessment of an Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using Fish Assemblages in Keum-Ho River, Korea (어류군집을 이용한 금호강의 생물보전지수 (Index of Biological Integrity, IBI) 평가)

  • We evaluated the aquatic ecosystem of Keum-Ho River through applications of the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) using fish assemblages and Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) during June-November 1999. Overall IBI values ranged from 13 to 37 with mean of 23 (n=25, Std. error= 1.16), indicating a "Poor" or "Very Poor" condition according to the criteria of Karr (1981) and U.S. EPA (1993). The values of mean IBI declined at the rate of $0.22km^{-1}$(($r^2$=0.91, p< 0.05) along the longitudinal distance from the headwaters to the down-river. Reduced IBI values at down-river (St. 4 and 5) were attributed to the decreases in riffle benthic species and the relative abundance of insectivore and increases in tolerant species, anormalies and exotic species. Spatial pattern in IBI agreed with QHEI values, which showed a linear relation ($r^2$=0.998, p< 0.001) with mean number of species. Field measurements of conductivity and pH, indicators for variation of conservative ions, showed that the river water was diluted up to 30% by summer precipitation and surface run-off from the watershed, resulting in physical and chemical instability during the monsoon. For these reasons, average IBI values during monsoon and postmonsoon decreased more than 20% compared to pre -monsoon. Before the perturbation of the system (i.e., pre-monsoon), values of QHEI were inversely correlated (r=-0.99, p< 0.0001) with realtive abundance of native omnivore and were positively correlated (r=0.87, p=0.05) with relative abundance of native carnivore. These results indicate that spatial degradation of habitat quality modified the species richness and trophic structure, producing decreased IBI values. Studies on the Management Plan in Urban Ecological Protected Area of Seoul - A Case Study of the Baeksil Valley Ecological Scenery and Conservation Area - (서울 도시생태 보호지역 관리계획 연구 - 백사실계곡 생태·경관보전지역을 대상으로 -)

  • This study is for constructing detailed data to secure biological diversity and maintain a healthy ecosystem in Backsasil Valley Ecological and Scenery Conservation Area, and for preparing an ecological management plan fit for the protected area. The period for this study was from April 2010 to May 2013. Recently, the increase of visitors to Baeksasil Valley, as well as the plantation and dissemination of introduced vegetable species, become factors accelerating ecological disturbance. Major research contents included the reviews of the management system of the protected areas, the necessity of ecological management at the basin level, establishing the system of a management plan, research and analysis of environment ecology, analysis of threatening factors, goal-setting, management strategies, and a plan through SWOT analysis. Survey items were the natural environment, major components of ecosystem, and human-use. The goals of ecological management were basin zone management for amphibians, conservation and restoration of forest vegetation for conservation habitat of Dryocopus martius, conservation habitat of Zelkova serrta for nature landscape, and management of users for environment protection. The conservation management plan at a basin zone level contains the management of point and non-point pollution sources in the upstream, securing growing conditions for native plants, securing safe habitats for amphibians, and securing of habitats for major wild birds. Also, restoration of natural forests, management of native plants and introduced vegetable species, and restoration of degraded forest paths are suggested for the restoration plans.

Relationship between the Distribution of Wildbirds and Temperature for Six Years - A Case Study of Worldcup Park in Seoul, Korea - (6년 동안의 야생조류 변화와 기온과의 관계연구 - 월드컵공원을 대상으로 -)

  • To see the influence of bird species by the change of temperature in city, we have carried out bird census 22 times for 6 years from 2003 to 2008 in Worldcup Park, Seoul. And we analysed the correlation between the temperature of Seoul and wildbirds. 15 orders, 38 families and 102 species were confirmed to have existed. We could find that Hypsipetes amaurotis gradually turned out to have increased with statistical significance for 6 years. To analyze the relationship between the temperature of Seoul and wildbirds, we have chosen 31 bird species observed more than 30% in frequency and proceeded the regression analysis. The survey shows that with the temperature rise the number of the resident birds such as Pica pica, Parus palustris, Anas platyrhynchos and Anas poecilorhyncha and the migratory birds such as Buteo buteo has declined. These 5 species have a possibility to be decreased as a global climate warming and maybe move to another habitat. In contrast, Oriolus chinensis and Falco tinnunculus are characterized into the species that increased due to the rising temperature. So they have a posibility to increase and expand their habitat. This survey shows that temperature rise can cause to change the composition of bird species. And 7 bird species related with the change of temperature have a great possibility as a indicator of the climate change.

Distribution Characteristics of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) as an Exotic Species, in Some Medium-to-Large Size Korean Reservoirs and Physico-chemical Water Quality in the Habitats (국내 중대형 인공호에서 외래종인 배스(Micropterus salmoides)의 분포 특성 및 서식지의 이화학적 수질)

  • The objective of this study was to understand the distribution characteristics of largemouth bass as an exotic species in relation to water chemistry. The survey was conducted in 10 reservoirs in Korea that showed different properties in size, location and eutrophic state. Total number of fish species observed in the artificial reservoirs was 52 (13 family) and the relative abundance of the bass was 13% of the total, which is the third dominant species in the whole sample. The relative abundance of bass was the highest in the Pyungtak reservoir (60%), whereas the Daechung reservoir showed the lowest abundance (only 3%). Although no significance difference statistically were founded in the relationship between bass abundance and water quality parameters. The reservoir trophic state showed some relationships. As result, the higher abundance was observed in hypertrophic reservoirs that located in the esturine regions compared to other large and medium reservoirs classified as meso- or eutrphic state. In conclusion, bass distribution in the reservoir ecosystem can not be directly explained by water chemistry only but other environmental factors should be considered.

Environmental Characteristics of Natural Conditions of the Flat Oyster, Ostrea denselamellosa in Haechang Bay, Korea (해창만 벗굴, Ostrea denselamellosa 서식지의 환경특성)

  • This study was measured environmental factors of flat oyster habitats and biomass of flat oyster to improve the productivity of flat oyster. Water temperature and salinity of the flat oyster habitat ranged from 5.5 to 27.4$^{\circ}C$ and from 31.2 to 33.4 , respectively. Average concentrations of DO, COD, DIN and PO$\_$4/$\^$3/ -P were 7.11 mg/l, 4.55 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at./l and 0.36 $\mu\textrm{g}$-at./l respectively. Surface sediments at the sampling area were composed of coarse sand, sandy silt and silty sand. Average level of IL, COD and AVS in the surface sediments were 2.6%, 13.70 mg/g dry and 0.33 mg/g dry respectively. In each sampling station, total standing crops of phytoplankton showed peaks twice in February and August. Dominant species of phytoplankton occurred in Haechang Bay throughout the year were Skeletonema costatum, Paralia sulcata, Eucampia zodiacus, Chaetoceros curvicetus, C. affinis, C. debilis, C. decipiens, Asterionella glacialis, Pseudonitzschia longissima, Pseudonitzschia seriata, Ceratium furca and C. fusus. Ten species of the bivalves were collected at the flat oyster habitat. Most of bivalves were the eutrophic species Ostrea denselamellosa, Crassostrea gigas, Ruditapes philippinarum, Scaphraca subcrenata, Scapharca broughtonii, Atrina pectinata, Fulvia mutica, Mytilus edulis, Protothaca jedoensis and Megacardita ferruginosa. The mean density of them was 21 inds./㎡ (479.14 g/㎡), while that of the flat oyster was at 0.25 inds./㎡ (231.25 g/㎡).

Landscape Ecological Evaluation for Avian Fauna Habitats at the Forest Swamp Minefields of Civilian Control Zone(CCZ) Close to the Demilitarized Zone(DMZ) of Korea (조류 서식지로서 지뢰지대 삼림습지의 경관생태학적 평가)

  • We evaluated the landscape ecological value of selected minefields and wetland patches as a habitat of the forest bird community. The avian fauna of three minefields of 8.5ha, 17.4ha, and 40.6ha were evaluated by comparing that of three control sites of mountain area. Average number of forest bird species, number of individuals, species diversity index, species richness, and species evenness were analyzed according to the size of patch and environmental characteristics such as the presence of wetland and connectivity. Community similarity was evaluated between test and control plots. Avian fauna can be summarized as follows. First, 63 species were recorded, and the sum of maximum counts was 828 individuals. Species diversity index was 3.8, and the species richness was 9.2. Species evenness was 93.3. Second, small, isolated forest patch had a low average number of species and individuals as expected. But, small forest patches with streams had higher bird density than patches without water surface. Third, forest patches with marsh wetland were evaluated as lower habitat quality than forest patches with stream wetland in terms of the number of bird species per unit area, number of individuals per unit area, species diversity index, species richness index, and species evenness. Finally, Community similarity of the small forest patches with streams was similar with large connected forest. As a result, lowland forest patch was shown the good quality for the forest bird community in spite of small extents, and community structure was similar with mountain forest bird community. Thus, riparian forest restoration could improve the biodiversity of the forest bird community.
