The eletrochemical behavior of light lanthanide complexes has been investigated by several electrochemical techniques in alkaline solutions. The composition of the complexes was determined by spectrophotometric method to be 1 : 1 and reduction mechanism was two steps 1 electron transfer reaction. The half wave potential of first peak depended on pH and cathodic current showed remarkably adsorptive properties. The results of DC and CV investigation demonstrated the quise-reversible nature of the electron transfer. The anion radical formed after first one electron reduction process, dimerizes to form dimer. The apparent irreversible behavior of the second wave is a result of the existence of a fast protonation following the second electron transfer. An exhaustive electrolysis was carried out at controlled potential of -1.80 V, deep blue color of the solution became progressively weaker, and then the solution became colorless solution. The final product of an exhaustive electrolysis is electro-inactive. The appearance of four steps may be explained by the fact the reduction of Ln-OCP elucidated ECEC mechanism.

An ionizable macrocyclic ligand, diaza-18-crown-6-diisopropionic acid(K22DAP) has been synthesized. Protonation constants of this compound and stability constants with some lanthanides were determined by potentiometric titration method. The protonation constants are log$K_1$ = 9.05, log$K_2$ = 8.37, log$K_3$ = 1.88 and log$K_4$ = 0.99. The logarithmic values of stability constants with La(III), Nd(III), Gd(III) and Lu(III) are 11.14, 11.43, 11.74 and 10.88 respectively. Extraction behavior of Ln(III) ion was investigated using TTA(thenoyltrifluoroacetone) as extractant in the presence of K22DAP as macrocyclic ionophore. It was observed that Ln(K22DAP)TTA is the dominating species in aqueous complexes of La(III) and Nd(III).

The electrochemical behaviors and analytical application of copper-1,5,9,13-tetrathiacyclohexadecane[16-ane-$S_4$] complex in acetonitrile(AN) solution have been investigated by the use of DC polarography and differential pulse polarography. Thus the formation constant of copper complex was $10^{3.51}$. Copper (Ⅱ) ion was found to form complex of 1-to-1 composition with [16-ane-$S_4$]. In addition, reduction step was irreversible and the reduction current was diffusion controlled. And the effect of concentration of the salting-out reagent and chelating agent and pH of aqueous phase on the determination of copper (Ⅱ) was investigated and diverse ion effect was discussed. By salting-out extraction technique, we can be determined until the concentration of copper (Ⅱ) of 60 ppb.

Adsorption behaviors of Ni(II) ions were investigated using amorphous alumina as adsorbent. In the adsorption kinetic study, it was observed that Ni(II) ions were bound to the alumina surface in two adsorption stages, the rapid and slow adsorption stages. The rapid adsorption proceeded within 1 hr, thereafter the slow adsorption occurred. The results of adsorption isotherm experiments showed that the Ni(II) adsorption obeyed the Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm, and that the adsorption enhanced with increasing pH. The change in ionic strength did not exhibit a conspicuous trend in Ni(II) adsorption, thereby suggesting that the adsorption occurs through surface complexation rather than electrostatic interactions. The amounts of adsorption were measured with varying pH at three different Ni(II) concentrations under the condition of constant ionic strength, showing that with increasing Ni(II) concentration, the percentage of adsorption decreased and the adsorption edge was shifted to a higher pH value.

An inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer/shielding system was specially designed and built for the analysis of radioactive materials. Both of an inductively coupled plasma source and a sample transfer system to be contacted with radioactive materials was installed in a stainless steel glove box. In terms of analytical capability and radiation safety, characteristic feature of the system was investigated. Its applicability to the determination of fission products and corrosion products in the radioactive materials such as spent fuel dissolver solution and the primary coolant of nuclear power reactors was evaluated. In the concentration range $0.01-0.1mgL^{-1}$, the relative standard deviation was found to be less than 5%.
A synthetic cecropin A(1-13)-melittin(1-13) [CA-ME] hybrid peptide was known to be an antimicrobial peptide having strong antibacterial, antifungal and antitumor activity with minimal cytotoxic effect against human erythrocyte. Analogues were synthesized to investigate the influences of the flexible hinge region of CA-ME on the antibiotic activity. Antibiotic activity of the peptides was measured by the growth inhibition against bac-terial, fungal and tumor cells and vesicle-aggregating or disrupting activity. The deletion of Gln-Gly-Ile (P1) or Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly (P3) from CA-ME brought about a significant decrease on the antibiotic activities. In contrast, Gly-Ile-Gly deletion (P2) from CA-ME or Pro insertion (P5) instead of Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly of CA-ME retained antibiotic activity. This result indicated that the flexible hinge or β-bend structure provided by Gly-Gln-Gly-Ile-Gly, Gln-Gly, or Pro in the central region of the peptides is requisite for its effective antibiotic activity and may facilitate easily the hydrophobic C-terminal region of the peptide to penetrate the lipid bilayers of the target cell membrane. In contrast, P4 and P6 with Gly-Gln-Gly-Pro-Gly or Gly-Gln-Pro in the central region of the peptide caused a drastic reduction on the antibiotic activities. This result suggested that the con-secutive β-bend structure provided by Gly-Gln-Gly-Pro-Gly or Gly-Gln-Pro in the central hinge region of the peptide seems to interrupt the ion channel/pore formation on the target cell membranes.
The urania-gadolinia fuels were dissolved with nitric acid. The analytical conditions of ICP-AES for the direct determinations of gadolinium in the uranium matrices without separation process were investigated. Based on the effect of uranium on gadolinium intensity, the best wavelength for gadolinium was 336.223 nm. The relative deviation of two methods, direct and indirect measurements with anion exchange chromatography, was less than 5 %. Therefore it was possible for this procedure directly to measure 5~10 wt.% of gadolinium in urania-gadolinia fuels without separation by ICP-AES.
Chemically modified electrodes(CMEs) for Ag(I) were constructed by incoporating 1,5,9,13-tetrathiacyclohexadecane([16]-ane-$S_4$) with a conventional carbon-paste mixture composed of graphite powder and nujol oil. Ag(I) ion was chemically deposited onto the surface of the modified electrode with [16]-ane-$S_4$ by immersion of the electrode in the acetate buffer solution(pH=4.5) containing $5.0{\times}10^{-4}M$ Ag(I) ion. And then the electrode deposited with Ag(I) was reduced at -0.3V vs. S.C.E. Well-defined stripping voltammetric peaks could be obtained by scanning the potential to the positive direction. The CME surface was regenerated with exposure to 0.1M $HNO_3$ solution and was reused for the determination of Ag(I) ion. When deposition/measurement/regeneration cycles were 10 times, the response could be reproduced with relative standard deviation of 6.08%. In case of differential pulse stripping voltammetry, the calibration curve for Ag(I) was linear over the range of $5.0{\times}10^{-7}{\sim}1.5{\times}10^{-6}M$. And the detection limit was $2.0{\times}10^{-7}M$. Various ions such as Cd(II), Ni(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Mn(II), Mg(II), EDTA, and oxalate(II) did not influence the determination of Ag(I) ion, except Cu(II) ion.
Purpose: To evaluate the result of operative treatment with plate and wire fixation for fractures of the distal clavicle. Materials and Methods: We assessed 9 cases of fractures of the distal clavicle that were treated by plate and wire fixation from March 2001 to July 2003 and followed up over 1year. We used the reconstruction plate as a buttress and performed cerclage wiring to fix comminuted fracture site. The functional result of shoulder was evaluated by the scoring system of Rowe. Results: The average periods of bony union was 9 weeks in all cases. According to Rowe scoring system, the functional result was exellent in 7 cases and good in 2 cases. There was no LOM of shoulder and traumatic arthritis in AC joint. But there was skin irritation in 1 case. Conclusion : The operative method by reconstruction plate and wire fixation for distal clavicular fracture was useful when there were comminuted fracture. This method seems to be simple and satisfactory in terms of improvement of range of motion of shoulder, restoration of function and rare complication.
Micro gas sensor with single electrode was proposed for improving stability and sensitivity. Generally, metal oxide gas sensors have two electrodes for heating and sensing. This fabricated new type sensor have only a single electrode by forming a sensing material onto heating electrode. Pt as a heating and sensing electrode was sputtered on glass substrate and a $SnO_2$ sensing material was thermally evaporated on Pt electrode. $SnO_2$ was patterned by lift-off process and then thermally oxidized in $O_2$ condition for 1 hr., $600^{\circ}C$. The size of fabricated sensor was $1.9{\times}2.1\;mm^2$. As a result of CO gas sensing characteristics, this sensor showed 100 mV change for 1,000 ppm and linearity for wide range($0{\sim}10,000\;ppm$) of gas concentrations. And the sensor shows a good recovery characteristics of 1% deviation compared to initial resistance.
