  • The purpose of this was to examine the differences of large whopper swan (Cygnus cygnus) in wintering habitat preference among bridge sections of the lower Nakdong River of the Nakdong River Estuary, the largest whopper swan's wintering habitat in Korea. This species is designated and protected as Natural Monument in Korea. The survey was conducted in six time-series during the 2018~2019 wintering season, and it found up to 500 whopper swans were wintering in the lower Nakdong River. For the survey, a seven sections were set up based on the bridges across the river. Whopper swans were rarely observed in five narrow sections where the distance between bridges was less than 2 km. The stable population of the whopper swan was observed only in two broader sections where the distance between bridges was is over 4 km. As these sections were relatively little affected by artificial interference, the distance from the mouth of the Nakdong River was not a factor. Securing a stable space is considered as one of the most important factors for wintering of whopper swans, which are an endangered species. The survey results indicate that the distance between bridges should be at least 4 km to secure the whopper swan's stable habitat. These results are expected to be a reference to the development or restoration of the river ecosystems, especially bridge construction.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the bat's characteristic of using a bridge as a roosting site during the daytime and nighttime. 81 bridges built in the water system of the southeastern area of Gyeongsangbuk-do were investigated from Jul. 2007 to Oct. 2008. The species which use a bridge as a roosting site were 6 species of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Pipistrellus abramus, Hypsugo alaschanicus, Myotis petax, Myotis ikonnikovi and Eptesicus serotinus. There were 7 types of bridges in which three of them had a girder. This kind of structural characteristics are used for a roosting site of bats. There were other factors as well influenced on the utilizing it such as forest, vehicle passing under the bridge, and cultivated land around a bridges.

  • In this study, noncomposite and composite eco-arch structures with I-beams and precast concrete(PC) decks were investigated. Four finite-element models(a steel-girder model, a steel-girder-and-several-PC-panels model, a three-steel-girder model, and a three-steel-girder-and-several-PC-panels model) using a general finite-element program, ABAQUS, were reviewed to predict the strength of the noncomposite and composite arch structures. Based on the results of the finite- element analysis, the behaviors of the four models were investigated, and deflection and strain gauges for the experimental specimen consisting of three steel girders and several PC panels were set up to obtain the ultimate strength. The ultimate strength of the specimen was estimated to be 1,961kN. The ultimate strength was much larger than the 1,380-kN load calculated using AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications(2007). The noncomposite and composite arch bridges were found to have enough strength for safety.

  • Prohibition of lane changes in bridges and tunnels have been many problems in throughputs of expressways caused by heavy vehicles and slow-moving traffics. Nevertheless, those are constructed actively by the general trends, which are preservation of environment and ecosystem are more important, because mountainous districts are about 70% across the whole extent of Korea. In this paper, the proper design standards for permission of lane changes in bridges and tunnels classified into structure, safe, and driver's conveniences are suggested as follows. 1. Right shoulder should have more than 2.5m in bridges and tunnels. 2. Sufficient equipments of guidance like as directional signs, fingerposts, variable message signs, and markings should be established to smooth and safe lane changes of drivers. 3. Snow melting systems should be established in bridges worried about freezing. 4. Tunnels must be not only satisfied standards for prevention of disasters (2004.11) and lighting rules (KSA 3703), but also established anti-freezing facilities in entrance and exit. 5. The drivers should have honed on their car lights.

  • The purpose of this study was to ascertain the ecological state and problems of eco-bridges on Korean roads. The study was conducted from March to April 2007 by checking ecological factors and wildlife around the eco-bridges and habitats. 8 representative eco-bridges were selected by their bridge shape and condition of location. After field survey, we analyzed ideal trails for wildlife using field data, digital topology maps, satellite images, and land use map. In addition to trail analysis, we identified the propriety of the eco-bridges through Population Viability Analysis. Because of unsuitable location and management, we found that most of the bridges are not proper for wildlife dispersal. Moreover, in some habitats, we could expect that some local populations might be extinct without appropriate treatments.

  • The objective of this paper was to investigate the potential of road-crossing structures as biological corridors that can overcome wildlife habitat fragmentation caused by road construction. Snow tracking on animal trace adjacent to and under bridges, underpasses, and culverts of eight rural highways in Korea was carried out. A total 89 structures were monitored and the results follow. First, the probability of road crossing increases with the increasing cross sectional size of crossing structures. Second, small to medium sized carnivores such as raccoon dog, leopard cat, and Siberian weasel use all types of structures. Finally, water deer, or large herbivore crossed only under bridges. Consequently, further studies are necessary to identify suitable types of road crossing structures that can mitigate the probability of road-kills and habitat fragmentation of water deer.

  • The yeongok stream originates at the natural park, Mt. O-dae and flows to the East Sea of korea, normally maintaining I or II grade of water quality and its average water flux is 352,100 ㎥/d. However, the typhoon 'Rusa', which occured on 31 August 2002, changed its watercourse and configuration, and the ecosystem was deeply damaged. Moreover, the hydrological characteristics were once more transformed, and the ecosystem was secondarily damaged during repair-work of destroyed bridges and elevations. After the flood disaster, the species diversity diminished 17% for attached diatom and 44% for aquatic animals. However, the earth and sand, dug from river bed during intensive repair-work throughout the entire stream, made diversity drop to 32% for the diatom and the aquatic animals were wiped out. Especially, fishes were totally destroyed except for some species such as Moroco oxycephalus in the upper stream. The yeongok stream has little contamination source and short water residence time due to the short length and rapid slope, and consequently a temporary deterioration of water quality caused by repair-work may be rapidly recovered, but it needs a long time to restore the damaged ecosystem.

  • The proposed RDT(Reversed Double T) girder bridge is suitable to eco corridor, because of its cross section which resembles Korean alphabet vowel "ㅛ". The total height and cost of bridge would be reduced for its inner space containing some of plant soil. In this study, the performance of the RDT girder was assessed by comparing results of static test with those of nonlinear analysis. The cracking load of the RDT girder was evaluated more than two times of design load.
