  • This experiment was conducted on relatively acid sandy loam soil at Choong-ju campus, Kon-kuk University aimed at clarifying the influence of urea and ammonium nitrate on the effect of potassium to Chinese cabbage in soils either limed or unlimed with calcium silicate. The results are summarized as follows: a. Calcium silicate application enhanced cabbage growth and under this condition, the difference in effect of urea and ammonium nitrate can hardly be observed. b. Without calcium silicate application, the response of Chinese cabbage to ammonium nitrate was more distinctive than that to urea. This was partially attributable to the greater use of soil born potassium at ammonium nitrate treatment. c. Added potassium was not only affective in increasing cabbage yield but also contributed in improving quality of cabbage by producing greater edible portion of the cabbage. Such K effect was particularly pronounced on the acid soil where calcium silicate application was neglected. d. Potassium was easily translocated from outer leaves to inner leaves and thus, the concentration of K content in outer leaves played as a limiting factor of cabbage yield. Less than 20 me/100gr of K content in harvested dried outer leaves resulted in a linear reduction of cabbage yield.

  • To investigate the effect of inorganic nutrient supplement in oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus), we have conducted some study on cultural and growth characteristics of fruitbody formation and chemical composition of media and fruitbody. When supplemented with slow releasing fertilizer, contamination rate was not different from non-supplemented medium, days for incubation time and first pinhead were faster than non supplemented medium. And fruitbody yield and biological efficiency were increased $10{\sim}28%,\;7{\sim}20%$ respectively, but biological efficiency was decreased when increased supplement ratio. The chemical compositions (total carbon, total nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, potassium and phosphate) of slow releasing fertilizer supple mented medium and fruitbody were compared with non-supplemented.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of several substrates and ratio of NO3--N to NH4--N in nutrient solution on growth, yield and mineral uptake of sweet pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) in bag culture. The content of minerals such as P, K, Ca and Mg showed difference in concentration among media: P and Mg were the highest in vermiculite in vermiculti+rice hull, K in perlite+vermiculite and Ca in perlite+peatmoss; with the lowest in the single perlite medium respectively, Ca of mineral made fairly higest level in concentration compared with the others in all of the media. The concentration of mineral content was lower in the ratio of 8:2 than that of 10:0. Admitting that the pH made difference depending on the kind of substrates and ratios of NO3--N to NH4--N. The pH of 10:0 ratio in all the substrates was higher and more stable than that of 8:2. The range of EC in all the substrates showed from 1.78ds·m-1 to 2.10 ds·m-1, which was optimum range for growth of sweet pepper, and range of EC is larger in 8:2 ratio than that in 10:0 ratio. Plant height and stem diameter were nothing to do with the kind of substrates, but leaf area was the largest at vermiculite+rice hull of the 8:2 ratio, fresh and dry weights were heavier at peatmoss+carbonized rice hull, but were the lightest at perlite. All indexes related to the growth which had something to do with the kind of substrates higher in 8:2 ratio than those in 10:0 ratio. The number of fruit and fresh weight related to the ratio of the 8:2 were the highest as 17.5 at vermiculite+rice hull with 1,588g of fresh weight, while the yield from perlite was the lowest. The number of fruit was the highest as 16.4 at virmiculite+rice hull, yield was the higest as 1,394a at perlite+ peatmoss. The yield of 8:2 ratio at all substrates was higher than that of 10:0 ratio. Of the mineral content related to the plant part, K+ and Mg2+ were higher in concentration at leaf; Ca2+ were higher at root; PO4- was higher at stem and fruit; The content of mineral showed no difference between the ratio of the 8:2 and the ratio of the 10:0 with no regrading to the difference of mineral content among substrates; and K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+ uptake of sweet pepper were higher at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2; 2while PO4- uptake of sweet pepper was lower at 10:0 ratio than that of 8:2 ratio.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of age of transplants, propagated by cutting, of two cut rose (Rosa hybrida Hort.) cultivars on their subsequent growth and yield in an effort to develop an efficient cutting propagation method for domestic rose cultivars. Two cultivars used in this study were a standard type 'Pink Aurora' and a spray type 'Yellow King'. Cuttings were prepared as single node cuttings each with a five-leaflet leaf and were stuck in rockwool cubes ($5cm{\times}5cm{\times}5cm$, UR, Korea) at two different dates. Cuttings rooted for either 30 (stuck on Jan. 20, 2009) or 48 days (stuck on Jan. 2, 2009) were transplanted into a rockwool slabs ($10cm{\times}15cm{\times}100cm$, UR, Korea) on the same date, 18 Feb. 2009. Plant growth and cut flower quality were investigated for two successive harvests during the period of Jan. to July in 2009. In both cultivars, 48 days old plants showed some growth of the shoot and root before transplanting. However, in the case of 30 days old plants before transplanting no noticeable growth of the shoot and root was obserable in 'Pink Aurora', while only shoot growth, but not root growth to the bottom of the rooting medium, was observed in 'Yellow King'. This suggested cultivar-specific responses that in this experiment a spray type 'Yellow King' showed greater growth rate during the rooting stage than a standard type 'Pink Aurora'. In the measurement of growth and cut flower yield after transplanting, the 48 days old standard type 'Pink Aurora' produced greater number of cut flowers per plant than 30 days old plants, whereas their mean stem fresh weight was recorded smaller than that of the 30 days old plants. For 'Yellow King', 30 days old plants showed greater stem length, flower width, number of five-leaflet leaves per stem, stem fresh weight, and number of cut flowers per plant than 48 days old plants. Therefore, growth and yield were significantly affected by cultivar and age of the rooted cutting, and additional research is needed on the effect of age of rooted cuttings in more cultivars.

  • Summer cabbages in an alpine area are very sensitive to the fluctuations in supply and demand. Yield variability due to weather conditions dictates the market fluctuations of cabbage price. This study reports an empirical relationship based on weather conditions to estimate the growth and harvestable biomass of cabbages, factors that are critical for supply of summer cabbages. Based on experimental results testing sowing date effects over the two years from 1997 to 1998, a logistic equation was parameterized to predict leaf area expansion of summer cabbages. This logistic model for leaf area expansion was then combined with an empirical allometric relationship to predict total biomass. The final equation for estimating fresh weight accumulation of Chinese cabbage is given by: $$Fresh\;weight=3500/(1+{\exp}(5.175-1.153{\times}(6/(1+{\exp}(6.367-0.0064{\times}PHU)))))$$ Where PHU is potential heat units ($^{\circ}C$). The model performance was tested using weather data from 2003 to 2006 to predict fresh harvestable biomass. Overall the model performance was satisfactory with the correlation efficient ranging between 0.89 and 0.94 for each year.

  • Greenhouse studies were carried out to find the difference of growth, weed competition and herbicides response in barley(Hordeum vulgare L. emend Larnark) under foggy and non-foggy condition. Plant height, leaf stage, leaf width and shoot fresh weight of barley under foggy condition were greatly increased, while heading rate ripening rate and number of grains per panicle of barley were reduced. Weed emergence based on fresh weight was much greater under foggy than that under non-foggy condition. Plant height of barley under foggy condition was increased comparing with non-foggy condition and significantly reduced with increasing the duration of weed competition, while 1,000-grain weight of barley reduced by the early competition(0∼20 days). Among the herbicides treated, butachlor and thiobencarb inhibited growth of barley under foggy than non-foggy condition. Plant height of barley treated of herbicides under foggy condition was ever increased but 1,000-grain weight of barley was reduced. Weeding efficacy(75-90%) by shoot fresh weight of weeds under foggy condition at 25 days after application was lower 3 to 15% than that under non-foggy condition.

  • Ground-based remote sensing can be used as one of the non-destructive, fast, and real-time diagnostic tools for quantifying yield, biomass, and nitrogen (N) stress during growing season. This study was conducted to assess biomass and nitrogen (N) status of paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants under N stress using passive and active ground-based remote sensors. Nitrogen application rates were 0, 70, 100, and 130 kg N $ha^{-1}$. At each growth stage, reflectance indices measured with active sensor showed higher correlation with DW, N uptake and N concentration than those with the passive sensor. NIR/Red and NIR/Amber indices measured with Crop Circle active sensors generally had a better correlation with dry weight (DW), N uptake and N content than vegetation indices from Crop Circle passive sensor and NDVIs from active sensors. Especially NIR/Red and NIR/amber ratios at the panicle initiation stage were most closely correlated with DW, N content, and N uptake. Rice grain yield, DW, N content and N uptake at harvest were highly positively correlated with canopy reflectance indices measured with active sensors at all sampling dates. N application rate explains about 91~92% of the variability in the SI calculated from NIR/Red or NIR/Amber indices measured with Crop Circle active sensors on 12 July. Therefore, the in-season sufficiency index (SI) by NIR/Red or NIR/Amber index from Crop Circle active sensors can be used for determination of N application rate.

  • This experiment was carried oui to determine the relativeness between growth, yield characters and bio-informations as influenced by the spray and rest time intervals of nutrient solution. Tomato(Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were grown in aeroponic system on a misting schedule of continuously 60 sec, 30 sec and 10 sec at 10 min intervals with full strength Yamazaki's solution recommended for tomato production. The results obtained were as follows : 1. Leaf area was highest in the plot of 30 sec spray and 10 min rest while the forest one was the plot of 60 sec spray and 10 min rest. Growth characteristics in terms of dry weight of each organ, number of flower, number of flower setted and fruit dry weight were greater in the plot of 30 sec spray and 10 min rest than the other treatments. 2. The number of flower increased with decreasing dry weight but number of flower sorted was not significantly different among treatment except for the plot of 60 sec spray and 10 min rest. 3. Leaf dry weight and fruit dry weight were highly correlated so that 30 sec spray and 10 min rest plot which is the highest fruit dry weight showed the largest leaf area. Continuously sprayed plot reduced markedly the fruit dry weight compared with leaf area. Optimum spray and rest time of nutrient solution in the range of this experiment was determined as 30 sec spray and 10 min rest. 4. Solar radiation within glasshouse during daytime reduced severely compared with outdoor one and air temperature within greenhouse was higher than the leaf temperature of tomato plant. The changes of environmental factors, solar radiation, temperature were accompanied with the sensitive change of bio-informations of tomato leaf Especially differences of spray intervals of nutrient solution affected greatly to the changes of bio-informations : leaf water potential, stomatal resistance and leaf temperature etc. 5. The changing patterns of leaf growth as influenced by the spray and rest intervals of nutrient solution were closely related to the leaf water potential, stomatal resistance and leaf temperature. Feasibility was demonstrated that measurement of bio-information of tomato leaf as influenced by the change of environmental factors could be expected to the amount of growth and fruit yield.
