  • This study was conducted to compare three agro-climatic indices among 22 agro-climatic zones in Northeast China area. Meteorological data produced by NASA (MERRA-2) was used to calculate growing degree days (GDD), frost free period (FFP), and growth season length (GSL) at this study sites. The three indices did not differ among 6 years (2011-2016). However, they showed statistical spatial difference among agro-climatic zones. The GDD ranged between $531.7^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$ (zone 22) and $1650.6^{\circ}C{\cdot}day$ (zone 1). The range of the FFP was from 141.5 day (zone 22) to 241.7 day (zone 1). And the GSL showed spatial distribution between 125.1 day (zone 22) and 217.9 day (zone 1).

  • The study was made of the cultural condition and physiological characteristics of the symbiotic pair of microorganisms, Cellulomonas flavigena and the second organism. It also contains the results of a taxonomical study of the second organism. The results obtained wers summarized as follows : 1) Cell yield of the mixed culture, Cellulomonas and the second organism, was higher than that of each pure culture in CM-Cellulose medium. 2) The taxonomical characteristics of the second organism revealed that it probably belonged to the genus Sporocytophaga because it had a gliding motility and microcyst. 3) Optimum pH of the mixed culture was found to be in the vicinity of 7.2, and optimum temperature of the cell growth in the mixed culture was observed to be in the vicinity of 30$^{\circ}C$. 4) It was found that the majority of the population during growth in the mixed culture consisted of Cellulomonas flavigena. 5) Cellulomonas flavigena required thiamine and biotin as growth factors but Sporocytophaga sp. had no requirement of vitamins. 6) Gulucose was not found in detectable amounts in the medium of Cellulomonas flavigena but it was traced in the mixture by thin layer chromatography. 7) Sixteen amino acids were analyzed from the cell protein of Cellulomonas flavigena by amino acid autoanalyzer. The amount of the leucine, valine and arginine was very high.

  • Unrecorded fern species of Korean flora, Thelypteris interrupta (Willd.) K. Iwats. (Thelypteridaceae) and Dryopteris subexaltata (H. Christ) C. Chr. (Dryopteridaceae), were collected from Jeju island off the south coast of Korean peninsula and reported here. T. interrupta is most similar to T. acuminata (Houtt.) C. V. Morton in morphology, however, the two species are readily distinguishable by the plant color including rhizome, stipe base and spore, and the presence of glandular hair as well as the distribution pattern of sorus on lower leaf surface. D. subexaltata is also well distinguishable from its relatives, D. sparsa (D. Don) Kuntze, D. sabaei (Franch. & Sav.) C. Chr., and D. yakusilvicola Sa. Kurata by the presence of proliferation, shape of pinnae, distribution pattern of sori on lower leaf surface, and shape of indusium.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the callus formation and to determine the composition and contents of the Hee amino acids in seedlings and callus of Rhodiola sachalinensis. The callus formation from the part of seedling-roots was the most effective on MS (Murashige and Skoog) media supplemented with 2.0 mg $L^{-1}$2,, 4-D included in 1.0 mg $L^{-1}$ kinetin than the other experimental plots which prepared with the different concentration of the various growth regulators. Free amino acids extracted from the explants and the callus were a total of 25∼26 kinds. Especially, the basic amino acids such as arginine, lysine and histidine released in callus were found relatively in a large quantity. These results suggest that the cultured callus of Rhodiola sachatinensis could induce for the mass production of the other useful ingredients.

  • Root rot of Cucurbitaceae plants, caused by Monosporascus cannonballus, is one of the recently described diseases in Korea. The distribution and pathogenicity of M. cannonballus were examined by field and in vitro experiments. Root rot caused by M. cannonballus occurred on melon, oriental melon, watermelon and cucumber plants. In two years of disease survey, the disease occurred at 10 and 32 fields in 1997 and 1998, respectively, which were located at Kimhae, Chinju, and Namhae in Kyeongnam province, at Kwangyang in Chonnam province, at Kwangju city, and at Yeoju and Inchon in Kyeonggi province. The disease progress in a melon field at Namhae was not observed until the middle stage of plant growth, but rapidly increased at the fruit maturing stage, resulting in more than 50% yield loss. Isolation rate of M. cannonballus was 36.7% from wilted hosts. Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani were also frequently isolated. In vitro test, seedlings wilted after 7∼14 days of inoculation, and perithecia were formed in infected roots 21 days later. Two cucumber cultivars, Baekbong and Eunhwa, were resistant to the disease.

  • This study carried out to investigate the variation of flavonoids contents in mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) according to plant parts, harvesting time, growth stage, and sowing time. Vitexin and isovitexin were found only in the seeds but not in the leaves, petioles, stems, and roots. Vitexin and isovitexin in seeds were detected only in the seed coat at concentration of 51.1 and $51.7\;mg{\cdot}g^{-1}$, respectively, but not in the cotyledon. There were no differences in the content of vitexin and isovitexin in mungbean seeds according to early, recommended and late harvesting times. Rutin in leaves was isolated and identified as a functional substance. The content of rutin was the highest in the leaves and higher in the order of petioles and stems. However, there was no rutin in the seeds, roots, and pods. The highest rutin content in the leaves, petioles and stems was observed at the 3rd leaf stage, which was higher in the order of the 5th and 7th leaf stage.
