  • The author intended to investigate external and internal changes in the cone structure, changes in water content, sugar, fat and protein during the period of seed maturation which bears a proper germinability. The experimental results can be summarized as in the following. 1. Male flowers 1) Pollen-mother cells occur as a mass from late in April to early in May, and form pollen tetrads through meiosis early and middle of May. Pollen with simple nucleus reach maturity late in May. 2) Stamen number of a male flower is almost same as the scale number of cone and is 69-102 stamens. One stamen includes 5800-7300 pollen. 3) The shape is round and elliptical, both of a pollen has air-sac with $80-91{\mu}$ in length, and has cuticlar exine and cellulose intine. 4) Pollen germinate in 68 hours at $25^{\circ}C$ with distilled water of pH 6.0, 2% sugar and 0.8% agar. 2. Female flowers 1) Ovuliferous scales grow rapidly in late April, and differentiation of ovules begins early in May. Embryo-sac-mother cells produce pollen tetrads through meiosis in the middle of May, and flower in late May. 2) The pollinated female flowers show repeated divisions of embryo-sac nucleus, and a great number of free nuclei form a mass for overwintering. Morphogenesis of isolation in the mass structure takes place from the middle of March, and that forms albuminous bodies of aivealus in early May. 3. Formation of pollinators and embryos. 1) Archegonia produce archegonial initial cells in the middle and late April, and pollinators are produced in the late April and late in early May. 2) After pollination, Oespore nuclei are seen to divide in the late May forming a layer of suspensor from the diaphragm in early June and in the middle of June. Thus this happens to show 4 pro-embryos. The organ of embryos begins to differentiate 1 pro-embryo and reachs perfect maturation in late August. 4. The growth of cones 1) In the year of flowering, strobiles grow during the period from the middle of June to the middle of July, and do not grow after the middle of August. Strobiles grow 1.6 times more in length 3.3 times short in diameter and about 22 times more weight than those of female flower in the year of flowering. 2) The cones at the adult stage grow 7 times longer in diameter, 12-15 times shorter diameter than those of strobiles after flowering. 3) Cone has 96-133 scales with the ratio of scale to be 69-80% and the length of cone is 11-13cm. Diameter is 5-8cm with 160-190g weight, and the seed number of it is 90-150 having empty seed ratio of 8-15%. 5. Formation of seed-coats 1) The layers of outer seed-coat become most for the width of $703{\mu}$ in the middle of July. At the adult stage of seed, it becomes $550-580{\mu}$ in size by decreasing moisture content. Then a horny and the cortical tissue of outer coats become differentiated. 2) The outer seed-coat of mature seeds forms epidermal cells of 3-4 layers and the stone cells of 16-21 layers. The interior part of it becomes parenchyma layer of 1 or 2 rows. 3) Inner seed-coat is formed 2 months earlier than the outer seed-coat in the middle of May, having the most width of inner seed-coat $667{\mu}$. At the adult stage it loses to $80-90{\mu}$. 6. Change in moisture content After pollination moisture content becomes gradually increased at the top in the early June and becomes markedly decreased in the middle of August. At the adult stage it shows 43~48% in cone, 23~25% in the outer seed-coat, 32~37% in the inner seed-coat, 23~26% in the inner seed-coat and endosperm and embryo, 21~24% in the embryo and endosperm, 36~40% in the embryos. 7. The content compositions of seed 1) Fat contents become gradually increased after the early May, at the adult stage it occupies 65~85% more fat than walnut and palm. Embryo includes 78.8% fat, and 57.0% fat in endosperm. 2) Sugar content after pollination becomes greatly increased as in the case of reducing sugar, while non-reducing sugar becomes increased in the early June. 3) Crude protein content becomes gradually increased after the early May, and at the adult stage it becomes 48.8%. Endosperm is made up with more protein than embryo. 8. The test of germination The collected optimum period of Pinus koraiensis seeds at an adequate maturity was collected in the early September, and used for the germination test of reduction-method and embryo culture. Seeds were taken at the interval of 7 days from the middle of July to the middle of September for the germination test at germination apparatus.

  • These studies were, aimed at clarifying the relationship between the spring(winter) habits and the metabolism during the differentiation and development of young spike in naked barley. The pattern of change of nucleic phosphorus was paralleled to that of insoluble nitrogen in the normal heading type, showing their increase in the young spike and their decrease in the leaf at the stage of double ridges differentiation, respectively. However, in the rosetted type nucleic phosphorus remained at a constantly low level in both the young spike and the leaf, and insoluble nitrogen showed a considerably lower content in the young spike but a remarkable higher content in the leaf than that of the normal type. In addition to nucleic phosphorus and insoluble nitrogen, there were significant differences between the normal and the rosetted type in the content levels of PCA-soluble phosphorus, nonreducing sugar, crude starch and so on. Particularly, these differences were found even in the stage of bract differentiation, the vegetative phase, as well as in the reproductive phase. It appeared that nucleic phosphorus and insoluble nitrogen were closely concerned with the differentiation of double ridges, regardless of the varieties which are different in their spring habits.

  • This research was conducted to obtain the fundamental data on salt injury and different responses among cultivars in winter barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). Salts did not affect yield components including number of panicles, stem length, grain number per ear and grain yield while reduced stem dry weight and thousand seed weight significantly with increasing concentrations of salt from 60 to 180 mM. NaCl had less injury effect on barley straw dry weight and thousand seed weight than did $MgSO_4$. Chlorophyll content and relative turgidity in flag leaf were reduced when treated with both salts, while free proline in the salt-treated leaf was increased. Content of proline in salt-treated barley was about 10 folds compared to the control. Based on yield components and physiological traits of flag leaf, the tolerance to salt injury was the greatest in Baegdong, followed by Dongbori#1, Mogpo#55, and Gangbori. The results suggested that salt- stressed barley at reproductive stage had higher free proline content, and that special management in this stage must be considered because salt stress at heading stage affect flag leaf growth as well as yield components Harmfully.

  • Meteorological year variations for rice crop from 1973 to 1984 were compared by using air temperature and sunshine hour for nursery period, cooling index for reproductive stage and meteorological yield productivity index for ripening period. The most optimum transplanting date and heading date for crop yield based on real transplanting date-grain yield relationship or heading date-grain yield relationship, meteorological yield productivity index and actual results showed good agreement each other. Around May 26 for transplanting and August 10 for heading were the most optimum date in Indica/Japonica hybrid cultivars while these were about June 8 and August 23 for Japonica cultivars, respectively. On the other hand, theoretical late limiting heading date for safe ripening were August 20 for Indica/Japonica hybrid cultivars and August 30 for Japonica cultivars, respectively, for both methods, cumulative temperature method during ripening with 80% believable frequency and meteorological yield productive index method having 1000(kg/10a) yielding potential. Based on the yield forecast trial, the highest values of photosynthetic efficiency, 2.5%, and crop growth rate, 23g/㎡/day, were recorded during 30 days before rice heading. Considering the photosynthetic efficiency and solar radiation, the potential crop growth rate was more or less 30g/㎡/day and the biological grain yielding potential in a existing cultural practices was approximately 900-1000(kg/10a) in Milyang weather condition. To increase further yielding potential, either photosynthetic efficiency or harvest index or both should be improved by manipulating appropriate canopy architecture, plant spacing, fertilizer, chemical, etc.

  • Seasonal changes of the growth characteristics and biomass of Scirpus fluviatilis, a aquatic emergent vascular plant, were investigated to reveal the phenology and the population dynamics and to provide the fundamental resources for the restoration counterplan of the wetland vegetation in the littoral zone of the Upo wetland, Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea from March 2006 to November 2006. Scirpus fluviatilis was distributed commonly in Upo, Mokpo, Sajipo, Jokjibyeol, and Topyeongcheon upstream and downstream of Upo wetland, and the density was highest in Mokpo. Distribution range for the water depth was 9~49cm, and the highest shoot density in 26~49cm, and the mean shoot density was $119/m^2$, and the mean shoot length was 122.3cm on May 28. The number of the tuber was $104.5/0.25m^2$, and the living tubers were 84.2%. The mean fresh biomass of the living tubers was 3.0g, and those of 1~4g was most as 57.9%. Germination rates of the living tubers was 43.8%, and the maximum rate was in 7~9g and more than 10g. In the pot cultivation, the shoot density of the germinated tubers and the dormant tubers were highest as 13.5 and 9.7, respectively in early August. In the field study, the shoot density had few change before typhoon damage, while the density increased abruptly in November after flooding accompanied with the typhoon 'Ewiniar'. The shoot length in the pot cultivation and in the field study were 100~116cm and 60~170cm, respectively in the growth-end. Biomass allocation rates into the stem, leaf, flower, and underground parts were 8.9%, 6.6%, 0%, and 84.5%, respectively in the pot cultivation of the germinated tubers, and those of the dormant tubers were 7.1%, 7.1%, 0%, and 85.8%, respectively. The tuber number increased to 1.4~4.1 times by the growth-end, so it is concluded that Scirpus fluviatilis is mostly propagated by the vegetative reproduction.

  • This experiment was conducted to find out the compositions of nutrient solution for closed system in substrate culture of cucumber. Cucumber(Cucumis sativus L. cv. Eunsung baekdadagi) plants were grown in the substrates supplied with the nutrient solutions whose strengths were 1/2, 1, and 3/2 of the original concentration developed by National Horticultural Research Station in Japan. By increasing the nutrient concentrations, plant height decreased but leaf length, leaf width, and leaf number showed little differences. A number of marketable fruit and marketable yield were the highest in the concentration of 1 strength. The nutrient compositions of solution developed for closed system in cucumber substrate culture were N 11.4, P 3.3, K 6.0, Ca 4.5, and Mg 3.5 me.$\ell$$^{-1}$ during the vegetative growth period and N 10.4, P 3.3, K 5.0, Ca 4.5, and Mg 3,5 me.$\ell$$^{-1}$ during the reproductive growth period. To examine the suitability of nutrient solution developed in the above experiment, cucumber plants were grown in the substrates supplied with different solutions and concentrations - Yamasaki's nutrient solution(Yamasaki) of 1 S, nutrient solution of Research Station for Greenhouse Vegetable and Floriculture on the Netherlands(PTG) of 1 S, nutrient solution developed in the above experiment(SCU) of 1/2, 1, and 3/2 S. EC and pH in root zone changed little in the all treatments during growing period. As cucumber plants grew, the concentrations of N, P, and K in root zone decreased but Ca concentration increased. Net $CO_2$ assimilation rate of cucumber leaves was high in SCU of 1 and 3/2 S, and Yamasaki of 1 S. Growth of cucumber plants was the lowest in SCU of 1/2 S.

  • To clealify the cause of barley and wheat sterility that occurred 77 / 78 cultivation period in Yeongnam area, a few environmental conditions were analyzed. The results are summarized as follows; 1. During the important growing stages such as meiosis and heading stages of barley encountered with severe droughtiness and unusual low temperature. 2. Soil moisture contents in the double cropping paddy soils were higher than cultivated uplands, and in the subsoils than the surface soils, in the clay soils than the sandy soils, in the northern aspect than the southern aspect of slope, respectively. 3. The sterilizing percentage of barley in the double cropping paddy fields were lower than cultivated uplands, in the alluvial fans and plains were lower than cultivated uplands, in the alluvial fans and plains were lower than in rolling or in foot slopes and the northerm aspect of slopes were lower than southern aspect. 4. The sterilizing percentage in the sandy soils were higher than clay soils and in the soils that have shallower plowing layer and shallower available depth had higher sterility. 5. The sterilizing percentage of barley had negative correlation with soil moisture contents in the surface and subsoils in both of cultivated upland or double cropping paddy fields. 6. The droughtiness that prevailed over reproductive growing stages of barley might be cause the sterility and the severe coldness also could be accelerate the phenomenon.

  • In 1980, the abnormal low temperature was lasted during the late stage of rice growing season, thus low temperature injury occurred severely. The severity of the injury and nutrition absorption were investigated. The result obtained were summarized as follows: 1. It was considered that the severe low temperature injury of rice was caused by the low temperature and shorts of sunshine in the late growing season of rice, especially, the minimum air temperature which was lasted for a few days below critical reproductive growing temperature in the meiosis stage affected high the injury. 2. The low tmperature injury was lightened in the no nitrogen applied plot, and becoming severe with high nitrogen levels, but the balanced application of NPK lessened the low temperature injury. 3. The low temperature injury was more severe in Indica and Japonica hybrid than in Japonica cultivar, and the injury was shown as sterilizing, degraded spiklets, ill emerging of head and inhibition of nutrition absorption, etc. 4. Under the low temperature condition, $SiO_2$ content of rice plant was significantly reduced according to the increase of nitrogen levels. 5. Under the low temperature condition, the optimum application amount of nitrogen for Milyang 23, was 13, 6 kg/10a, this was approximately 10kg/10a smaller than average in usual year. The highly reduced rice yield was resulted from the cool injury, and the reducing rate of yield was larger in Indica and Japonica hybrid cultivar than in Japonica cultivar.

  • The yield potential of sesame depends on genetic factor, environmental factor, genetic × environmental interaction, as well as agronomic factors such as sowing date, planting density or seed rate for sowing. The main aim of this study was to analyze the effects of different sowing dates on the yield-related traits and total seed weight of sesame. The analysis of variance revealed that different sowing dates affected sesame yield-related traits such as plant height, number of branch per plant, number of capsule per plant, 1,000-seed weight, and total seed weight. Early or late sowing date showed negative effect of yield-related sesame traits and total seed weight. Optimum sowing date for sesame in the middle region of Korean peninsula was May 10th, in which total seed yield recorded 90 kg per 10 are. Path-coefficient analysis revealed that the number of capsule per plant and plant height were major factors that affected the total seed weight of sesame across different sowing dates.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the basic information for the clarification of spring growth habits mechanism of naked barleys. The isozyme patterns and activities of peroxidase in the young spike and leaf blade were analyzed during the differentiation and development of young spike. The characteristic differences between the normal and rosetted type were in c and g isozymes in young spike, and in i isozyme in the leaf blade. In the normal type, c and i isozymes disappeared at the stage of spi-kelet differentiation, g isozyme at the stage of flolet differentiation. But, in the rosetted type, those three isozymes remained in dark stained condition until the time of final sampling. Especially, those three isozymes were higher in the rosetted type than those in the normal type even at the stage of bract differentiation(BDS), just prior to the reproductive stage. The activities of peroxidase decreased slowly after BDS in the young spike and leaf blade in the normal type, While, in the rosetted type, increased linearly, and the degree of increasing was remarkable in the young spike. It was interesting that the degree of activities in young spike was higher in the rosetted type than that in the normal type even at BDS. From the above results, the remarkable differences of the isozyme patterns and activities at BDS between the normal and rosetted type were considered to be the physiological expression of the varieties concerned with the degree of spring growth habits.
