Influence of Drought Period in Different Growth Stage on Agronomic Characters in Sesame (참깨 생육기별 한발기간이 주요형질에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, drought period when important agronomic characters of sesame plant is critical, was examined at different growth stages. Plant death by drought started at 40 days after drought in vegetative growth stage and 20 days, in reproductive growth stage. Obserbed by growth stage, drought damage in reproductive growth stage was more in jurious than vegetative growth stage. All the important agronomic characters was refreshed until 40 days and 20 days after drought in vegetative growth stage and reproductive growth stage respectively, but it could berefreshed after those times. Decrease rate of yield by drought ranged from 29 to 80% in vegetative growth stage and from 49 to 85% in respective growth stage. All the important agronomic characters except rate of ripeness showed positive association with grain yield under drought condition. Oil content in grain was decreaced by drought but composition of fatty acid was not affected by it.

Flowering Response According to Different Seeding Dates and Day-length Treatment in Perilla (들깨 파종기와 일장처리에 의한 품종간 개화반응)

  • To understand flowering response under diverse day-length condition and the movement of floral stimulus, we used six perilla accessions which showed diverse days to flowering. Though the growth phase was reported as irreversible between vegetative and reproductive stage, perilla showed reversible growth phase according to day length increase in May and June. When it sowed in March, flowering response was started in early May and vegetative and reproductive phase was coexisted in late June. When a part of a perilla plant was treated under short day condition, only apical buds on main stem or branches were flowered but other long day conditioned apical buds were not flowered. With this result it is suggested that the floral stimulus can not be transferred to other part of perilla.

Tolerance of Rice, Soybean, and Hot Pepper to Simulated Acid Rain at Different Growth Stages (벼, 콩, 고추의 생육시간별 인공 산성비에 대한 내성)

  • To compare the tolerance of crops to acid rain at different growth stages a simulated acid rain (SAR) of pH 2.7 was applied to rice, soybean, and hot pepper from vegetative growth stage to harvest (Veget.-Harvest) and from reproductive growth stage to harvest (Reprod.-Harvest). Visual damages of crops by SAR were greater in the order of rice < hot pepper < soybean and greater at Veget.-Harvest than at Reprod.-Harvest treatment. Chlorophyll content of all crops was greater in the order of Veget.-Harvest < Reprod.-Harvest treatment < control, but photosynthetic activity was not affected by SAR treatments. Nitrogen concentration and uptake of rice plants at harvest were similar among SAR treatments, but those of soybean and hot pepper were greater at Veget.-Harvest treatment than at Reprod.-Harvest treatment or control. Sulfur concentration of all crops was not affected by SAR treatments, but total sulfur uptake of soybean was greater in SAR treatments than untreated control. Grain yield of rice and soybean was not affected by SAR although grain fertility, percent ripened grains, and 1,000-grain weight of rice at Veget.-Harvest treatment were lower compared with Reprod.-Harvest treatment or control. Fruit dry weight of hot pepper was greater in the order of Veget.-Harvest < Reprod.-Harvest < control due to decreased fruit number per plant and average fruit weight. At one time application of SAR at flowering stage, brown spots were observed on the spikelets of rice at below pH 2.3. Petals of soybean and hot pepper were wilted at pH below 1. 7 and 2.0, respectively, but fruit setting was not affected by the pH of the SRA.

Influence of CGMMV Infection Times on Growth and Quality of Watermelon and Cucumber (CGMMV 감염시기가 수박과 오이의 생육 및 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the effect of infection time of CGMMV on the growth and quality of watermelon and cucumber plants. The effect (damages by CGMMV) was estimated on the watermelon where CGMMV had been inoculated at different growth stages, vegetative (transplanting stage, vegetative growth stage) and reproductive growth stage (fruiting stage and fruit hypertrophy stage). In the case of cucumber, CGMMV was inoculated at transplanting stage and Erst flowering stage, respectively. When watermelon was infected with CGMMV at vegetative growth stage, vine length, internode length, leaf area, and fruit weight of the plants largely decreased compared with control plants, while the infected plant growth was not very different from control plants when it was infected at reproductive growth stage. Brix of the fruit of watermelon also decreased when the plants was infected with the virus earlier than fruiting stage. The occurrence of 'Pisubag', internal discoloration and decomposition of watermelon fruits, tended to be increased as earlier infection time with CGMMV In the case of cucumber infection time with CGMMV did not influence earlier growth of the plants, but did later growth showing that plant height, vine length, internode length, number of leaf, leaf wide, and leaf length of the plants decreased as infection time became to be earlier.

Determining Nitrogen Topdressing Rate at Panicle Initiation Stage of Rice based on Vegetation Index and SPAD Reading (유수분화기 식생지수와 SPAD값에 의한 벼 질소 수비 시용량 결정)

  • The core questions for determining nitrogen topdress rate (Npi) at panicle initiation stage (PIS) are 'how much nitrogen accumulation during the reproductive stage (PNup) is required for the target rice yield or protein content depending on the growth and nitrogen nutrition status at PIS?' and 'how can we diagnose the growth and nitrogen nutrition status easily at real time basis?'. To address these questions, two years experiments from 2001 to 2002 were done under various rates of basal, tillering, and panicle nitrogen fertilizer by employing a rice cultivar, Hwaseongbyeo. The response of grain yield and milled-rice protein content was quantified in relation to RVIgreen (green ratio vegetation index) and SPAD reading measured around PIS as indirect estimators for growth and nitrogen nutrition status, the regression models were formulated to predict PNup based on the growth and nitrogen nutrition status and Npi at PIS. Grain yield showed quadratic response to PNup, RVIgreen around PIS, and SPAD reading around PIS. The regression models to predict grain yield had a high determination coefficient of above 0.95. PNup for the maximum grain yield was estimated to be 9 to 13.5 kgN/10a within the range of RVIgreen around PIS of this experiment. decreasing with increasing RVIgreen and also to be 10 to 11 kgN/10a regardless of SPAD readings around PIS. At these PNup's the protein content of milled rice was estimated to rise above 9% that might degrade eating quality seriously Milled-rice protein content showed curve-linear increase with the increase of PNup, RVIgreen around PIS, and SPAD reading around PIS. The regression models to predict protein content had a high determination coefficient of above 0.91. PNup to control the milled-rice protein content below 7% was estimated as 6 to 8 kgN/10a within the range of RVIgreen and SPAD reading of this experiment, showing much lower values than those for the maximum grain yield. The recovery of the Npi applied at PIS ranged from 53 to 83%, increasing with the increased growth amount while decreasing with the increasing Npi. The natural nitrogen supply from PIS to harvest ranged from 2.5 to 4 kg/10a, showing quadratic relationship with the shoot dry weight or shoot nitrogen content at PIS. The regression models to estimate PNup was formulated using Npi and anyone of RVIgreen, shoot dry weight, and shoot nitrogen content at PIS as predictor variables. These models showed good fitness with determination coefficients of 0.86 to 0.95 The prescription method based on the above models predicting grain yield, protein content and PNup and its constraints were discussed.

Yield Response to Nitrogen Topdress Rate at Panicle Initiation Stage under Different Growth and Nitrogen Nutrition Status of Rice Plant (벼 유수분화기 생장 및 질소영양상태에 따른 수량의 수비질소 반응)

  • To secure high yield and good quality of rice, plant growth and nitrogen (N) nutrition status should be taken into account for managing panicle N topdressing (PN). This research aimed at investigating the rice yield response to PN under different plant growth and N nutrition status that was conditioned by different rates of basal and tillering N fertilizer (BTN). Stepwise multiple regression (SMR) was used for the analysis of yield response to (i) BTN and PN, and (ii) shoot N content at PIS (BTNup) and shoot N uptake from PIS to harvest (PNup). Rice yield increased significantly as BTN and PN Increased, but there was no significant interaction between BTN and PN. Yield increased almost linearly with the increasing BTN and PN up to $10{\sim}12$ and $6{\sim}7\;kgN/10a$, and with the increasing BTNup and PNup up to $6{\sim}7$ and $5{\sim}6\;kgN/10a$, respectively. But yield increment tended to decrease above those levels. These declines resulted from the decreased ripened grain ratio and 1000 grain weight even though spikelet number per unit area increased more at above those N levels. Spikelet number per unit area had the linear relationships with the shoot N uptake until heading, and with yield. Like most yield response curves, yield response in this experiment followed the diminishing return function with BTNup, PNup, and plant N uptake from seeding to harvest. Regardless of the degree of BTNup and PNup, yield had a quadratic relationship ($R^{2}$>0.88) with whole shoot N accumulation until harvest, suggesting that the yield determination was closely related with the whole shoot N uptake until harvest regardless of the differences in seasonal shoot N uptake.

  • The ecological characteristics of Sargassum macrocarpum, an ecologically and commercially valuable brown alga, were investigated from May 2018 to June 2019 in Jeju Island, Korea. The S. macrocarpum population formed patches at depths of 3-5 m. Growth in the length of the alga reached a maximum of 135.3±20.0 cm in June. The weight of the alga reached a maximum of 3.6±2.1 kg·wet-wt in May. The mean density and biomass of S. macrocarpum was 4.5 individuals·m-2 and 4.6 kg·wet-wt.·m-2 in their habitat. Receptacles were observed from April to August and egg release was detected from June to July when the seawater temperatures were 19.3-22.9℃. The developmental initiation of thalli occurred at temperatures above 14.1℃ and maturation required approximately 726.3 degree-days. The reproductive allocation of this alga, calculated from the reproductive frond length(RFL) and reproductive frond weight(RFW) indices to the whole length and weight, reached a maximum of 69.3% in June. The growth and maturation patterns of S. macrocarpum could be divided into vegetative growth (October-January), maturity preparation (February-April), maturation (May-June), egg release (June-July), and resting period (August-September). This was the first study to examine an S. macrocarpum population throughout the entire year in a natural habitat in Jeju Island, Korea.

Variation of Chamazulene Contents in Local Collections of Mugwort (Artemisia spp.) (수집종 쑥의 청색색소 카마줄렌 함량 변이)

  • This study was carried out to select chamazulene containing species and to know whether chamazulene content varies depend on individual plants within a population or not. Among five collected mugworts, chamazulene was detected only in Artemisia indica. Chamazulene content in the leaves was higher than that in stems at vegetative stage. Camazulene in inflorescence was not higher than that in leaves even at reproductive stage. Chamazulene was higher in the leaves of the upper part of the plant than those of the middle and lower of the plant at vegetative stage. Chamazulene contents of 50 individuals within a population were varied from 0.01% to 0.11% with mean of 0.045%. About 36 individuals, 72 percent of total individuals examined, had more than 0.03% of chamazulene. There was no difference in chamazulene contents between parents and their clones.
