  • This paper presents methods to correct and evaluate the chromatic aberration occurring on the cut-off line of a headlamp without additional optical components and alignment process. To correct the chromatic aberration using a geometrical concept, the maximum differences in exit-ray angle between wavelengths are reduced by tilting the convex surface of an aspheric projection lens. To evaluate the chromatic aberration, the position and luminous intensity to be measured are suggested, and the criterion for chromatic aberration is presented through color coordinates. From the evaluation of an automotive headlamp designed using this geometrical method, it is found that the chromatic aberration of the cut-off line is significantly reduced.

  • In this paper, we propose a chromatic aberration removal algorithm in image capture devices, which considers local properties of the image. Chromatic aberration is generated by the fact that the refractive index of the lens is different for different wavelengths, which produces color artifacts on strong edge due to misalignment of RGB channels. Under the characteristics of the artifacts, the proposed algorithm first estimates the regions with the apparent color artifacts as the neighborhoods of the strong edge. In the regions, the proposed algorithm removes the color artifacts by matching the edges of RGB channels. The widely used conventional methods based on global image warping could not remove the color artifacts of longitudinal chromatic aberration and purple fringing identified by the image sensor, whereas the matching process of the proposed method could reduce them. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional methods on objective and subjective criteria.

  • To capture color and near-infrared images simultaneously, a multi-spectral filter array(MSFA) sensor is used. This is because an NIR band gives additional invisible information to human eyes to see subject under extremely low light level. However, because lenses have different refractive indices for different wavelengths, lenses may fail to focus widely different rays to the same convergence point. This is why a chromatic aberration(CA) problem occurs and images are degraded. In this paper, the image restoration algorithm for an MSFA image, which removes the CA problem, is presented. The obtained MSFA image is filtered by the estimated low-pass kernel to generate a base image. This base image is used to remove CA problem in multi-spectral(MS) images. By modeling the image degradation process and by using the least squares approach of the difference between the high-frequencies of the base and MS images, the desired high-resolution MS images are reconstructed. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs well in estimating the high-quality MS images and reducing the chromatic aberration problem.

  • Lenses have different refractive indices for different wavelengths of light. This is why different wavelengths of rays are focused at different positions in the focal plane. Images are blurred and noticeable colored edges appear around the objects, which is known as chromatic aberration (CA). In this paper, an algorithm for removing CA artifacts in color images is proposed. Based on the fact that the gradients of color channels are highly correlated, the differences of the gradients of the channels in edges are minimized. The cost function is designed by using the gradients of the channels. Experimental results show the good performance of the proposed algorithm in removing the CA artifacts.

  • This paper shows the best selection and combination of glass in lens design, to correct a chromatic aberration using achromatic and apochromatic conditions. Using this research result, we have designed a telecentric lens for machine vision in the full range of visible light. We obtain good optical quality in the form of a quite small RMS wavefront error of $0.057{\lambda}$ in the super-broadband wavelength range 380 nm -780 nm. This result is better than that for a common telecentric lens in the visible wavelength range 486.1-656.2 nm.

  • In this study, we present a symmetry graphical method to design an achromatic optical system composed of many lenses on an achromatic glass map. To take into account the lens spacing and the number of lenses, we use the relative ratio of paraxial ray height at each lens and the concept of an equivalent single lens. Converting an arbitrary optical system into various doublet systems, the most effective doublet is then selected to correct the color aberration, through material selection and the redistribution of the optical power. By designing a fisheye lens using this approach, an achromatic optical system is effectively obtained over the visible waveband.
