  • This article explores bilateralization phenomena in Korean families through intimacy and interaction with matrilineal kins. In-depth interviews were conducted with married men and women aged from their mid-30s to mid-40s. The findings indicate that the intimacy range of participants was restricted to blood-based kins. The power hypothesis was supported for male participants. Some wanted to actively contact their spouse's family members, while others did not want to be connected with the spouse's families. Interaction with wives' families was based on the exchange perspective. In contrast, a complicated mechanism existed in the intimacy and interaction of female participants. Most of them were connected with in-laws in a passive way but actively interacted with their family-of-origin. However, some female respondents did not have good relationships with their mothers. Undifferentiation between mothers and married daughters negatively influenced their relationships. Therefore, it could be concluded that bilateralization phenomena in Korean families is another kind of shackle of patrilineal norms.

  • This case study examined whether a cooperative musical instrument playing could enhance interactions between children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their neurotypical (NT) siblings. It involved three children with ASD aged 7-12 years and three NT siblings aged 6-11 years. Each group, comprising a child with ASD and their NT sibling, participated in a 40-minute sessions twice weekly for eight sessions over four weeks. The intervention included three stages: simultaneous action, complementary action, and achieving a joint goal. Evaluation criteria included the initiation and response behaviors of each child, and sequential interactive behaviors and cooperative behaviors between pairs were measured. Additionally, before and after the intervention, parents and NT sibling assessed their perceived sibling relationships. Results showed increased interactive and cooperative behaviors. Post-intervention, both parents and NT siblings rated the sibling relationship highly, despite little change in sibling conflict and competition consciousness. These findings indicate that interactive instrument playing can enhance perceptions of siblings as cooperative play partners and aid in teaching them how to collaborate during interactions.

  • Understanding the consumer-brand relationship in the IT market from the "emotional" or "love" perspective requires an urgent research effort to fully comprehend IT consumers beyond brand loyalty. This study introduces and attempts to empirically validate the concept and measurement of "Lovemarks," which capture the emotional relationship between consumers and IT brands, especially smartphone brands. Having a second-order confirmatory factor analysis for three different smartphone brands, this study extracted 18 final items with six constructs of mysteriousness, sensuality, intimacy, performance, trust, and reputation. The results indicate that the Lovemarks are psychometrically valid and reliably measure the emotional interaction of consumers and IT brands beyondbrand loyalty.

  • This study investigated the moderating effect of negative emotionality on the association between teacher-child intimacy and peer interaction based on a differential susceptibility model. The participants were 252 three-year-old children recruited from a day care center and preschool located in Incheon and Gyeonggi province. The teacher-child relationship was measured on a Student-Teacher Relationship Scale. This measure is a type of teacher's report with ratings based on a teacher's daily observations. This scale is composed of closeness items on the degree of warmth and open communication in teacher-child relationships. Peer interactions were measured with a Penn Interactive Peer Play Scale. This measure is composed of play interaction items, play disruption items and play disconnection. Negative emotionality was measured with Child Behavior Questionnaire. Teachers measured teacher-child intimacy and peer interaction scales. Parents reported children's negative emotionality. The research showed that negative emotionality moderated the association of teacher-child intimacy, play interaction, play isolation and play disruption. The magnitude of association between teacher-child intimacy and play disconnection as well as play interaction was greater for high levels of negative emotionality. Teacher-child intimacy was significantly associated with play disruption only for high levels of negative emotionality. The findings of this study support a differential susceptibility model.

  • The current study investigated the effect of emoji use and gender on job interview training within virtual environment (VE). A 2 (emoji use: use vs. no use) × 2 (interviewee gender) × 2 (interviewer gender) mixed design experiment (N = 80) was conducted. The result shows that emoji may be implemented within VE to promote positive affect. Intimacy predicted better mutual understanding and higher attention. Practical implication is provided as using emoji in virtual environment can be utilized as a practice tool for job interviews, or for other potentially stressful social contexts.

  • Nonverbal immediacy plays a key role in interpersonal communication, inducing closeness and another interaction. This case study investigates the nonverbal behaviors in Human-Robot Interaction(HRI) focusing on immediacy, and how they affect perception of a robot. The results show that nonverbal immediacy, such as nodding and leaning forward, affect perceived interactivity. Nonverbal immediacy can be interpreted their meaning clearly when verbal feedback or other communication channel reinforcing them. Also, touch is found to affect come up with similar ones to the robot, because it is associated with concrete and discrete context. People tend to apply social rules to the robot, but they are more open to the unfamiliar robot compared to strangers. The findings in this study provide future HRI studies with heuristic implications by showing a direction and clarifying principles for composition of verbal and nonverbal expression.

  • One of the interesting social phenomena in short-form video platforms is the hashtag challenge wherein ordinary users are encouraged to create by imitating short viral videos on a particular theme. Despite the increasing popularity of hashtag challenges, theoretical discussion on related user behavior is still very insufficient. In this study, we attempted to examine the impact of micro-influencers in order to understand users' willingness to participate in hashtag challenges. For this purpose, the para-social interaction theory and imitation behavior literature were adopted as key theoretical basis. In an empirical investigation using 243 survey data from TikTok users, our study found that a user's illusion of intimacy with a micro-influencer (i.e., para-social interaction) had significant positive impact on the intention to participate in a hashtag challenge. This study also showed that the degree of para-social interaction in a short-form video platform was determined by both media content-related factors and media character-related factors (i.e., content attractiveness, physical attractiveness, and attitude homophily). Our work in this study provided significant theoretical and practical implications on how to leverage micro-influencers for the success of hashtag challenges in a short-form video platform.
