Effects of Driver's State Driving Anger on Collision Avoidance and Situation Awareness: Moderating Effect of Negative Affect (운전자의 상태운전분노가 추돌회피와 상황인식에 미치는 효과: 부정정서의 조절효과)

  • This driving simulation study examined the effect of driver's state driving anger(SDA) on collision avoidance(CA) and situation awareness(SA), as well as the moderating effect of driver's positive and negative affect(PA and NA) on the relationship between the driver's SDA and SA. The results showed the followings. First, high SDA group collided with the leading vehicle more frequently than low SDA group. Second, neither the driver's trait driving anger(TDA) nor PA/NA yielded significant changes in SA after SDA was induced. Third, high SDA tended to lower SA but this tendency was observed only when the driver's NA was high. These results suggested that SDA than TDA is a significant deteriorating factor of the driver's SA, and more importantly, SDA should be considered with other affect-relating variable such as NA in explaining the effect of SDA on driver's SA and CA.

  • Recently, negative emotional responses by drivers are a growing problem, which leads to not only a traffic accident but a crime so called 'road rage' in countries with heavy traffics including South Korea. Under such a circumstance, measuring stress- and fatigue-induced emotional responses by means of wireless communication and a wearable system would be useful. The purpose of this study is to implement a system that measures various signals from a driver, derives and monitors his emotional responses from the measurements and verify its derivations with reliability. This paper, as a first part of the research, describes how the system has been implemented with experimental methods.

A Methodology of Measuring Degree of Contextual Subjective Well-Being Using Affective Predicates for Mental Health Aware Service (정신적 건강 서비스를 위한 감성구를 활용한 주관적 웰빙 지수 측정 방법론)

  • The contextual subjective well-being (SWB) of context-aware system users can be very helpful in recommending relevant mental health services, especially for those who struggle with mental illness due to a metabolic syndrome or melancholia. Self-surveying measuring or auto-sensing methods have been suggested to monitor users' SWB. However, self-surveying measuring method is not inappropriate for a context-aware service due to requesting personal data in a manual and hence obtrusive manner. Moreover, auto-sensing methods still suffer from accuracy problem to be applied in mental health services. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to propose a contextual SWB estimation method to estimate the user's mental health in unobtrusive and accurate manners. This method is timely in that it acquires context data from the user's literal responses, which expose their temporal feeling. In particular, we developed a measuring method based on exposed feeling verbs and degree adverbs in chat and other text-based communications which show anger or negative feelings. Based on the proposed contextual SWB degree estimation method, we developed an idea of well-being life care recommendation. From the experiment with actual drivers, we demonstrated that the proposed method accurately estimate the user's degree of negative feelings even though it does not require a self-survey.
