The surrogate safety assessment model which was developed based on the conflict theory by FHWA in the US is software to analyze traffic conflicts using the individual vehicle trajectory data from a microscopic traffic simulation model. This study aims at assessing the safety of different signal control strategies, including pre-time and actuated signal control, using the SSAM. To this end, this study effort has developed a microscopic traffic simulation model using VISSIM through a field study, and then produced the surrogate measures, including TTC, PET, DR, MaxS and DeltaS, and the numbers of conflicts, including rear-end, right angle and lane-changing conflicts. The assessment results indicated that the actuated signal control may produce more conflicts in terms of rear-end conflicts. The use of SSAM in the safety assessments for diverse traffic alternatives in a safe and fast way may contribute to the improvement of safety in the roadway transportation.
This paper examined the effects of users' expectations, norms and recreation motives on perceived conflict in a recreation setting. The study used data collected at Second Campground in Chirisan National Park, Korea, during the summer of 1994. Of the total 280 questionnaires distributed, 253 questionnaires(90.4%) were usable. About 82% of the respondents perceived conflict by others' late-night-singing. This study supported the notion that perceived conflict occurs when norms, expectations, and recreation motives are interfered with by others' incompatible behaviors. Solitude/nature motive factor was a better predictor of perceived conflict than norm-interference or expectation-interference. However, the relative predictability of each variable on perceived conflict could be various depending on different kinds of recreation motives, specific ways of measuring norms, expectations and conflict. Management implications were discussed.

It has reported that a median bus-stop island on an exclusive median bus lane (EMBL) has shortened a crossing distance unit, encouraged a pedestrian's illegal crossing, and increased the number of accidents in the area. This study presents (1) the analysis of inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns collected on exclusive median bus corridors and (2) the estimated performance of safety barriers restraining the occurrence of those. Total 19,649 pedestrian crossing data collected at the 'Sookmyung-university' median bus-stop, and the inappropriate pedestrian crossing patterns among those were grouped in terms of time and space violations. Physical safety barriers restraining illegal pedestrian crossings were considered as an alternative, and its performance in safety was quantified through microscopic simulation with conflict analyses by using surrogate safety assessment model. The findings suggest the number of conflicts reduced be 24.9 percentages compared to the one of the present condition when the physical safety barriers are placed at each of the eight ends of the EMBL pedestrian crossing.
Unsignalized intersections are classified into two-way-stop-controlled(TWSC) and all-way-stop-controlled(AWSC) intersections for the analysis of capacity and level of service. There is no AWSC intersection in Korea, but non-controlled intersections are common. Non-controlled intersections are operated only by the driver's decision without any control. However, the study for the analysis of capacity and level of service of the non-controlled intersection has been rare. As the first stage research, this study aims to determine the measure-of-effectiveness (MOE) for the performance evaluation of non-controlled intersections. The relationships between traffic volume and the intersection passing time (delay) and number of conflicts on each intersection are analyzed. It was found that the number of conflicts were more sensitive to the traffic volume compared with the delay. It means that number of conflicts can be the MOE for the performance of non-controlled intersection. The analysis of the number of conflicts and traffic volume showed a linear relationship, so that traffic volume can also be an MOE. The level of service of non-controlled intersection can be determined with either of the MOE's. Since the performance is also influenced by the ratio of traffic volumes of crossing streets, the traffic volume should be adjusted by the ratio. The capacity of non-controlled intersection was suggested to be 2,000veh/hr referring that of AWSC intersection in the USHCM. The criteria was suggested by evenly dividing the traffic volumes based on the capacity.

Currently, the conflict between use and conservation of the ocean is intensifying in the ocean, so it is essential to introduce an effective method to define and manage it in advance for each core value of ocean. Accordingly, although the ocean is divided into nine marine use zone and managed through marine spatial planning, the analysis of the sea areas where mutually exclusive activities overlap in the ocean is insufficient. In this study, an automated model was developed to derive a sea areas where the core values of the ocean conflict. In order to analyze marine activities, available data on marine activity were collected, and data necessity for the analysis of mutually exclusive marine activities were derived. After classifying the derived data into legal and characteristic data, a conflict matrix was prepared through pairwise comparison between data to designate priorities when overlapping occurs. Based on the designated priorities, an automation model was developed, and sea areas where marine activities conflicted were derived, visualized, and area calculated. Using this, it is judged that the efficiency of decision-making can be improved by clearly deriving the sea areas where major issues occur in establishing the marine spatial planning.

Dirofilaria immitis is a filarial nematode parasite that causes cardiopulmonary dirofilariasis in dogs. The purpose of this study was the development of real-time PCR assays for efficient detection of D. immitis. The D. immitis-specific primers confirmed in our previous study and a newly designed TaqMan probe were used for quantitative diagnostics. First, SYBR Green real-time PCR was performed using the specific primers and serially diluted genomic DNA or plasmid DNA, and melting curve analyses were performed after amplification. The melting curve showed one specific peak in each of the genomic and plasmid DNA reactions, suggesting that the primers specifically amplify the D. immitis cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Comparison of SYBR Green and TaqMan real-time PCR using serially diluted plasmid DNA showed higher efficiency and specificity with TaqMan real-time PCR. The real-time PCR assays developed in this study will provide improved diagnostic methods to overcome the limitations of conventional diagnostic tools and facilitate more rapid and accurate diagnoses.

To increase road safety at blackspots, it is needed to develop a new method that can process before accident occurrence. Accident situation could result from traffic conflict. Traffic conflict decision technique has an advantage that can acquire and analyze data in time and confined space that is less through investigation. Therefore, traffic conflict technique is highly expected to be used in many application of road safety. This study developed traffic conflict decision program that can analyze and process from signalized intersection image. Program consists of the following functional modules: an image input module that acquires images from the CCTV camera, a Save-to-Buffer module which stores the entered images by differentiating them into background images, current images, difference images, segmentation images, and a conflict detection module which displays the processed results. The program was developed using LabVIEW 8.5 (a graphic language) and the VISION module library.

The application of PPLT is difficult to analyze and judge only from the effects of the delay time. In this study, the application of PPLT was proposed using not only the delay time of PLT and PPLT due to the change in traffic volume and the number of opposite straight lanes but also the traffic volume of passing a left turn and the number of conflict risks as indicators. According to the analysis, the more left-turn traffic than capacity and the less opposite-straight volume, the greater the PPLT effect. On the other hand, if the left-turn traffic is below capacity, the delay time will be reduced partially, but the overall passing left turn volume will not increase, and the conflict risk will increase. In addition, the conflict risk increases in the third lane or higher. Moreover, the difference of passing left-turn volume between PLT and PPLT showed a pattern similar to the delay time difference, and the PPLT coverage was wider than the difference in delay time and was associated more with the conflict risk numbers. Therefore, it would be reasonable to use passing left-turn traffic primarily, consider the delay time below the left-turn capacity, and consider the conflicting risk numbers simultaneously at or above the opposite straight three lanes.
