A Study on Implementation of a Mission Computer based on COTS (상용 기성품 기반 항공기 임무컴퓨터 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In the development of an avionics system, there is a trend of using commercial-off-the-shelf(COTS) equipments in order to reduce the development cost and time. In this paper, we present an implementation of an aircraft mission computer using the objected oriented software and the COTS equipments. We execute the aircraft guidance software on the system, and measure the calculation time and the used memory. To compare the guidance capability of the software program, we implement the same software logic on DS1104 system. The guidance software program executed on two different systems resulted in the almost identical simulation.

  • Air Data Recording System (ADRS) is the flight data recorder for the SmartUAV development. ADRS of the low cost designed for the SmartUAV has been developed and tested through the ground test. ADRS is the reconstructing data acquisition system and can be programmed automation controller. This paper focuses on the design aspects of the hardware and software. The hardware aspects of the ADRS include details about the hardware configurations for the interfaces with the Digital Flight Control Computer(DFCC) and sensors, components modifications. The software section describes the ADRS Operating System(OS) and data flow for archived files. Finally, ADRS-based results of the SmartUAV that include the Iron-bird test, system interface test and ground test are presented.

A Study on Performance Comparison of COTS Operating Systems for a Mission Computer Using UAV Collision Avoidance Algorithm (무인기 충돌회피 알고리즘을 이용한 임무컴퓨터용 상용기성품 운영체계 성능 비교에 대한 연구)

  • There has been an increase in the number of researches on the segment for commercialization after developing avionics systems. In this paper, we have applied a commercial off-the-shelf(COTS) operating systems in an aircraft mission computer. We used UAV collision avoidance algorithms to compare the performance of COTS operating systems. The UAV collision avoidance algorithms were tested on different operating systems to compare the performances of the operating systems. The measured parameters are memory usage and processing time. We have verified that the UAV collision avoidance algorithms worked successfully and compared the performance of each operating system.

Study on the Development of the Customized Ready-Made Hull Forms according to the Retrofit (선박개조에 따른 고객 맞춤형 기성품 선형 개발)

  • The primary objective of the current work was to develop a standardized retrofit hull form capable of saving energy based on existing vessels. The bow shape of existing vessels was investigated, giving consideration to design draft and speed. Resistance performances were assessed for existing vessels according to operating conditions. Commercial CFD codes and model test materials were used for assessment of effective power. Three retrofit hull forms with minimum resistance were selected given real operating conditions. These vessels were named after customized ready-made hull forms to enable ship owners to make easier choices. The effective power of each vessel was estimated under real operating conditions. Subjects were operated with the lowest draft, and performance for retrofit No. 3 showed an 11-16% improvement in effective power at low speed ranges of 16-18 knots compared to existing vessels. When operated with a middle draft, performance for retrofit No. 3 showed a 6-11% improvement in effective power at low speed ranges compared to existing vessels. When operated with the highest draft, performance for all vessels showed little difference in effective power.

  • The current trend of low cost ultra-small satellites is to utilize Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) parts to save cost, and accordingly, Command and Data Handling (C&DH) that operates the satellite and collects/processes the data is also designed and developed around commercial controllers. However, functionalities of commercial controllers are limited according to the specs outlined by the manufacturer. In order for the commercial controllers to be used for satellites where variety of interfaces is required, a separate interface circuit is required. Therefore, a Multi Digital Data Control System (MDDCS) using Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) has been developed in order to expand multiple digital interfaces that are not supported by the commercial controller, and also to compensate for SEU. This has been implemented on Actel A3P1000 using Very High Speed Integrated Circuits Hardware Description Language (VHDL).

Cost-Effective High-Altitude Scientific Balloon Development and its Flight Test (비용효율적인 고고도 과학기구 개발 및 비행시험)

  • The high altitude scientific balloon has been used for decades in advanced aerospace countries such as United States, France, and Japan to carry out various research objectives. Since the initial cost for development and operation is enormous, it has been conducted by national research institutes. Recently, the advent of open source software/hardware ecosystems with low-cost yet high-performance have lowered barriers to enter into scientific balloon research and development. In this study, a zero pressure balloon prototype was designed considering the cost, usability, compatibility, and development period by using commercial off the shelf (COTS) items. In addition, the flight operation experience was accumulated through eight times of the flight tests, and operational reliability of the balloon system was verified. Finally, the foundation for the operation of the large zero pressure balloon was established.
