  • The purpose of this study was to suggest methods to apply generalizability theory to mathematics teacher evaluation using classroom observations in Korea by analysing mathematics teachers in the U.S. using the instructional quality of assessment instrument as an illustrative example. The subjects were 96 teachers participating in Year 3 and Year 4 from the Middle-school Mathematics and the Institutional Setting of Teaching (MIST) project funded by the National Science Foundation since 2007. The MIST project investigates the following question: What does it takes to support mathematics teachers' development of ambitious and equitable instructional practices on a large scale (MIST, 2007). This study examined data based on both the univariate generalizability analysis using GENOVA program and the multivariate generalizability analysis using mGENOVA program. Specifically, this study determined the relative effects of each error source and investigated optimal measuring conditions to obtain the suitable generalizability coefficients. The methodology applied in this study can be utilized to find effective optimal measurement conditions for the mathematics teacher evaluation for professional development in Korea. Finally, this study discussed limitations of the results and suggested directions for future research.

  • As necessity of safety re-evaluation for spent fuel storage facility has emphasized after the Fukushima accident, accuracy improvement of heat load evaluation has become more important to acquire reliable thermal-hydraulic evaluation results. As groundwork, parametric and sensitivity analyses of various storage conditions for Kori Unit 4 spent fuel storage pool and spent fuel depletion parameters such as axial burnup effect, operation history, and specific heat are conducted using ORIGEN2 code. According to heat load evaluation and parametric sensitivity analyses, decay heat of last discharged fuel comprises maximum 80.42% of total heat load of storage facility and there is a negative correlation between effect of depletion parameters and cooling period. It is determined that specific heat is most influential parameter and operation history is secondly influential parameter. And decay heat of just discharged fuel is varied from 0.34 to 1.66 times of average value and decay heat of 1 year cooled fuel is varied from 0.55 to 1.37 times of average value in accordance with change of specific power. Namely depletion parameters can cause large variation in decay heat calculation of short-term cooled fuel. Therefore application of real operation data instead of user selection value is needed to improve evaluation accuracy. It is expected that these results could be used to improve accuracy of heat load assessment and evaluate uncertainty of calculated heat load.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the factors associated with adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Analyses of data provided by 450 adolescents attending secondary schools in Gyeongnam Province suggested the following results. First, adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities differed by gender, religion, and academic grades. Adolescents who were girls, who had religions, and whose academic grades were higher showed higher levels of positive attitude toward volunteer activities than their counterparts who were boys, who did not have religion and whose academic standing was lower. Second, adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities significantly differed by the family factor. To be specific, parental attention, parental support and family's participation in volunteer work made differences to the adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Third, the adolescents took significantly different attitudes toward voluntary activities according to the school factor. Significant differences were found according to attention and support from teachers. The students whose teachers had more interest in voluntary service and whose teachers offered more aid took a more positive attitude to voluntary service. Forth, some of the personal, family, and school factors were associated with adolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Among the personal factors, gender, religion, academic standing, and morality were associated with dolescents' attitude toward volunteer activities. Those who were girls, who were religious, whose academic standing was higher, and who were more moral took a more positive attitude toward volunteer activities. Among family and school factors, parental attention/support and attention and support from teachers affected the voluntary service attitude of the adolescents. The students whose parents had more interest and gave more support and whose teachers showed more interest and offered more support took a more positive attitude toward volunteer activities. Therefore parental attention and support were identified as the variable to make the best prediction of the adolescents' positive attitude toward volunteer activities.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore factors related to marital satisfaction among immigrant wives compared to Korean wives of Korean men. Participants included 409 immigrant wives married to Korean men and 474 Korean wives married to Korean men, both currently living in Korea. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that there were different sets of variables that predicted marital satisfaction for each group. Egalitarian decision-making was a significant predictor of marital satisfaction for immigrant wives only, whereas for Korean wives, it was the level of their depressive symptoms that was significantly but negatively associated with marital satisfaction. A wife's positive perception of her husband's communication style emerged as the strongest predictor of marital satisfaction for both Korean and immigrant wives. In addition, indicators of the cultural context of immigrant women (i.e., longer stay in Korea and greater frequency of experiencing discrimination in the past year due to their foreign appearance or status) emerged as significant predictors of immigrant wives' marital satisfaction even after taking demographic factors, depressive symptoms, and couple-level factors into account. The findings of this study contribute to existing research by (1) comparing the models of marital satisfaction for Korean wives and immigrant wives, identifying unique predictors for each group, and (2) examining the effect of cultural adaptation on the martial satisfaction of immigrant wives.

  • This study aims to illustrate T. H. Huxley's life and activities as a pioneer of British school science education which have been relatively little known than other aspects of him (e.g. Darwin's Bulldog). Undoubtedly, Huxley was one of the great scientists of the Victorian era, but he was also an active reformer of scientific enterprises and school science education through his strong engagement in various governmental and non-governmental positions and through his talents of delivering speeches and of writing books. He joined as a member to various royal commissions (esp. Devonshire Commission), became a president of several important scientific societies (e.g. Royal Society, BAAS) and published many well known books (e.g. Science and Culture, Selected Essays). As a science educator, Huxley himself taught biology and physiology for thirty years and known as an excellent teacher, participated in several historical education reform activities (e.g. a member of Devonshire Commission and of London School Board), worked as a science teacher trainer and as a DSA science examiner for the improvement of the quality of science teaching, and wrote a number of textbooks (esp. Physiography, The Crayfish) for various levels of schooling including elementary and secondary, imprinted his new idea on science teaching. His great role as a pioneer of school science education followed by a more professional successor, Prof. H. E. Armstrong who was better equipped with a more theoretical framework on the activities of learning science.

  • The importance of international science and technology cooperation is growing more and more, but we do not know much about what criteria could be used to choose a science or a technology that needs international cooperation first and foremost among many kinds of competing sciences and technologies. Moreover, this selection process is affected by evaluators' or science/technology experts' perception, but we do not quite know what they actually see when they evaluate the needs of international cooperation. This study investigates the conditions that international science and technology cooperation is encouraged by scholars and researchers in various areas. Based on theoretical arguments of Transaction Cost Economics, Measurement View, and Knowledge-Based View, we drew hypotheses on when experts perceive greater needs of international cooperation. Using the classification categories of 10 major sciences and technologies, we collected data from 151 respondents from scientists in research institutions and colleges. As a result, we found that experts in science and technology areas perceive strong needs of international cooperation when the importance of focal science or technology is high and the relative national level of focal science or technology is low. Also, we found that the importance and relative level of focal science and technology have positive moderating effects each other. Lastly, we found that when experts evaluate their own major areas, the strength of positive relationship between the importance of science and technology and needs of international cooperation is diminished.

  • This study suggests a macroscopic method of evaluating forest recreation function based on physical characteristics of forests. The method was verified by a correlation between forest recreation function in popular top 45 mountains and popularity among them, with using data-mountain area, height, distance between mountain and cities, population around mountain, and size of public service. According to analysis of the forest recreation function, it is shown that top 8 mountains, including Jirisan and Seoraksan, provide over 64% of total recreation function, while they serve the function relatively lower than mountains near mega cities-Bukhansan in Seoul-do, in terms of the function per unit area ($km^2$). It is because, in a case of national and provincial mountains, the size of mountain is likely a critical factor for determining recreation function and the distance influences on it relatively lower. These findings implicate that a large size of forests bring the recreation function to visitors on nationwide level, whileas forests in suburban provide intensively it to near population to near population.
