  • In this study we investigated the effects of the microclimatic conditions on tree growth in different site types for natural deciduous forests in Korea. First, we classified all the sites into 36 types according to their aspect (east, west, south, and north), elevation (higher than 1,000 m, 700$\sim$1,000 m, and lower than 700 m), and topographical conditions (ridge, slope, and valley). For each site type, we measured diameter growth with increment borer, and then estimated periodic annual increment of diameter, height and volume. We applied a topoclimatological technique for estimating microclimatic conditions, and produced monthly climatic estimates from which 17 weather variables (including indices of warmth, coldness, and aridity) were computed for each site type. The periodic annual increments of diameter, height, and volume were then correlated by regression analysis with those weather variables to examine effects of microclimate on tree growth by site type. We found that the correlation of diameter growth by site type was significantly correlated with most weather variables except daily photoperiod. Water condition was the most important factor for the height growth. For volume growth, on the other hand, the conditions such as relatively high temperature and low humidity provided favorable environment. Our regression analysis shows that aridity index is a good predictor for tree growth including diameter, height and volume increments.

  • The objective of this study was to develop allometric equations for the estimation of crown fuel biomass of Pinus koraiensis in Korea. A total of twenty four representative sample trees were destructively sampled in Gapyeong, Hongcheon, and Jeongseon. Crown fuels were weighed separately for each fuel category by size class and by living and dead. The results of this study showed that the needles contributed the largest biomass (16.6 kg, 34.7%), followed by live branches with size ranging from 2~4 cm (9.0 kg, 18.9%), 1~2 cm (6.6 kg, 13.8%), <0.5 cm (5.1 kg, 10.6%), 0.5~1 cm (4.9 kg, 10.3%), and dead branches (3.2 kg, 6.8%), while the live branches with 4 cm (2.4 kg, 4.9%) as the lowest. The adjusted coefficient of determination values were the highest ($R^2_{adj}=0.6021{\sim}9742$) and standard error of estimate were the lowest (S.E.E.=0.2018~0.7271) in allometric equation $lnWt={\beta}_0+{\beta}_1lnD$. The available fuels that are consumed during crown fires (i.e., needles and twigs with diameter less than 1 cm) comprised 55.6% of the total crown fuel biomass.

  • This study was conducted to estimate microclimate of natural deciduous forest in national forest of Pyungchang, Kangwon province and to investigate the effects of the microclimatic conditions on the periodic annual increment of diameter by site types. In this study, site was first classified by nine types considering both elevation (higher than 1,000 m, 700∼1,000 m, and lower than 700 m) and topographical conditions (ridge, slope and valley). For each of site types, diameter growth was measured by using increment borer and periodic annual increment of diameter was then analyzed. A topoclimatological technique, for estimating microclimatic conditions, which make use of empirical relationships between the topographical factor and the climatic normals in the study area was applied to produce monthly mean, maximum and minimum temperatures, relative humidity, precipitation and hours of sunshine. From these monthly estimtes, 17 weather variables such as warmth index, coldness index, index of aridity etc. which affect the diameter growth were computed for each of site types. The periodic annual increment of diameter was then correlated with and regressed on the 17 weather variables to examine effects of microclimatic conditions on the diameter growth by site types. From the correlation analysis, it was found that the diameter growth by site types was positively correlated with all of 17 weather variables except the warmth index. Especially, the conditions such as high relative humidity and large amount of sunshine hours provide favorable environment for the growth of diameter. On the other hand, it was also found that diameter growth was negatively iufluenced by warmth index. According to the regression analysis, the periodic annual increment of diameter could be well predicted by index of aridity and mean relative humidity for the growing season.

  • We estimated and compared C storages and annual $CO_2$ uptakes by 9 dominant tree species planted along the streets. DBH and age by tree species were measured in the sites selected considering the planting status and distributions of tree species, and biomass, C storage, growth rate, and annual $CO_2$ uptake were estimated for each species. As a result, L. tulipifera, M. glyptostroboides, P. occidentalis were classified into fast-growing group, P. serrulata, G. biloba, Z. serrata, S. japonica, A. palmatum showed intermediate growth rates, and P. densiflora was slow-growing. Average C storage per tree was 205kgC/tree and ranged from 518kgC/tree(L. tulipifera) to 41kgC/tree(P. densiflora). Average annual $CO_2$ uptake by urban street trees over their lifespan ranged from $7.6kgCO_2$/tree/y to $99.1kgCO_2$/tree/y and L. tulipifera was the greatest, followed by glyptostroboides and P. occidentalis, and P. densiflora was the lowest. Total annual $CO_2$ uptake by all street trees in Gyeonggi-do, estimated based on the annual $CO_2$ uptake by each species, was as small as approximately 0.67% of that by forest in Gyeonggi-do. However, urban trees are still important because forest area continues to decrease and urbanization occurs annually in Gyeonggi-do, and should be managed considering their multi-functional aspects, including mitigation of heat island effect and building energy saving(indirect $CO_2$ uptake).

  • The experiment which imposed the water stress to tobacco(Nicotiana tabacum L.) plant was carried at the late of maximum growth period. In order to know the influence of drought stress on the growth and developmemt of tobacco leaves of different position and to elucidate the physiological response of plant to various soil water content, stomatal conductance, and leaf water potential were measured. The drought stress at the maximum growth period negatively affected to the overall growth characteristics of shoot. The response of the growth was small at the middle and the lower leaves, and great at the upper leaves. The relative water content of upper, middle, and lower leaves at the fifth day after treatment were 74, 64, and 59%, respectively, as soil water content was reduced by 4.3%. This suggested that the wilting point of tobacco leaf was about 75%. The leaf water potential was -0.58 MPa in control and dropped to -1.20 MPa at the fifth day after treatment. This indicated that wilting of leaf may occur at the condition in which the difference of water potential between treatment and control, well watered, was greater than about 20%. Stomatal conductance at the fifth day after treatment dropped from 12 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ to 0.8 mol /$\textrm{m}^2 sec^{-1}$ in the middle and the upper leaves. Stomatal conductance of lower leaves already matured were not affected highly by drought stress at the maximum growth period, but maturing leaves, middle and upper leaves, were highly affected by limitation of soil water.

  • This study was subjected to compare seasonal changes of survival rate, relative growth rate, and chlorophyll contents of major oak tree species including Quercus acctissima, Quercus mongolica, Quercus serrata, Quercus varibilis seedlings grown in Quercus acctissima forest under different light intensities. Three light intensities were 81% of sunlight, 34% of sunlight and 21% of sunlight. In each treatment, 100 tree seedlings were planted and survival rate, growth rate, and chlorophyll contents were measured. The highest survival rate was Quercus acctissima in 73% seedlings compared with those subjected to the other tree seedlings in 45~66%. Lowest survival rate was Quercus vnriabilis seedlings in 41%. Oaks tree species of the height, the root collar diameters of the relative growth were better in the seedlings grown in 81% light intensities of full sun. But growth rates decreased rapidly in the shade treatment of 21% light intensities of full sun. Lowest chlorophyll contents(chlorophyll a, b and total) were shown at 21% light intensities of full sun, lowest light intensity treatment in this study This result is thought growth and chlorophyll contents associated with light intensity Also, Physiological characteristics has to be investigated in near future because photosynthesis and chlorophyll contents were strongly related to tree growth with long periods.

  • The phytomass and productivity of the evergreen needle pines(Pinus densiflora and Pinus rigida) and of the deciduous broad- leaved oaks(Quercus acutissima, Quercus variabililis and Quercus mongolica) in the watershed forests of South Han River, central part of Korea was estimated by the allometry. The allometic relations between D$^2$H and dry weight of stem(Ws), branches(Wb) and leaves(Wl) of these forests were as follows: Pinus densiflora community : logWs=0.58482D$^2$H-0.42417 logWb=0.6234D$^2$H-1.2321 logWl=0.2247D$^2$H-0.09359 Pinus rigida community : logWs=0.9218D$^2$H-1.4692 logWb=1.0064D$^2$H-2.2278 logWl=0.6275D$^2$H-1.1715 Quercus acutissima community : logWs=0.96659D$^2$H-1.56975 logWb=0.86315D$^2$H-2.17944 logWl=0.79876D$^2$H-1.97137 Quercus variabilis community : logWs=0.4753D$^2$H+0.20026 logWb=0.5725D$^2$H-0.92006 logW1=0.61649D$^2$H-1.4288 Quercus momgolica community : logWs=0.5526D$^2$H-0.1228 logWb=0.5188D$^2$H-0.9787 logWl=0.7754D$^2$H-2.6273 From the above formulae, the phytomass of Pinus densiflora was estimated to be much as 1,200,000 ton, Pinus rigida 610,000 ton, Quercus acutissima 289 ton, Quercus variabilis 2,800ton and Quercus mongolica 570,000 ton in the surveyed area, respectively. Accordingly, the phytomass of Pinus densiflora forest was occupied about 43.9 % in toto and was higher thanthose of other forests. The phytomass of watershed forests belonging to Degree 8 and Degree7 divided by degree of green naturality(DGN) was 74,000 ton and 2,000,000 ton, resfectively. Accordingly, the watershed forests in South Han River were mainly composed of Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica forests belonging to Degree 7.

  • To estimate the biomass, net production and nutrient distribution of Pinus Koraiensis and Quercus mongolica stand, experimental plots located in Kwangju of Kyonggi-do were selected. Ten sample trees selected account of DBH distribution were felled and the diagram of oven-dry weight distrubution of leaves, branches and stems for each 1m segment was constructed. The logarithmic regression equations between dry weight of each component and the variable of $(DBH)^2$ H obtained. The standing crops were estimated to be as much as 152.07 and 156.02 tons of dry matter per hectare in P. koraiensis and Q. mongolica stand respectively. The net production was estimated as 24.66 and 20.35t/ha$\cdot$yr and the net assimilation rate was 1.90 and 3.42kg/kg$\cdot$yr in same order. Particulary large proportions of nitrogen. calcium and magnesium were found in soil of P. koraiensis stand, phosphours and potassium in overstory of it. At Q. mongolica stand, large proportions of nitrogen. phosphorus. potassium and magnesium were found in soil and calcium in overstory. The amounts of litter fall was 4.013t/ha$\cdot$8 months in P. koraiensis stand and 3.490t/ha$\cdot$8 months in Q. mongolica stand.

  • The mushroom takes in charge of decomposer in ecosystem and its production is important indicator for sounded ecosystem function. To determine standing crop of basidiocarps(fruit body of mushroom), a weight must be measured by harvesting mushroom individual in the field. But this method has profound affection on the basidiocarps population or its surrounding condition due to habitat destruction. Thus, in this study, without harvesting any mushroom in the field, we developed allometric equation using some morphological parameters to estimate standing crop biomass of basidiocarps. Lentinula edodes, Pleurotus ostreatus, Flammulina velutipes and Conocybe tenera were used for allometry. Morphological variables of the mushroom were pileus diameter, pileus area, stipe length and stipe thickness. Consequently, all the experimental mushrooms species showed significantly correlation in biomass estimation of basidiocarps from allometric equation (p<0.05). As a result of this research, the standing biomass of the basidiocarps could be indirectly estimated with proportional expression, allometric equation drived from morphological characters.
