  • In this study, various cycles of liquid rocket engines were surveyed and specifically gas generator after burning cycle was investigated for upper stage motors. The engines for the upper stage can be categorized into three group based on the cycles and propellants at the diagram. Kerosene engines which adapt the gas generator after burning cycle and are located in the region II, are characterized for high combustion pressure and complexity. This cycle usually needs more than two pumps to use the turbine power efficiently. The fuel line can be divided into the gas generator line and the combustor line, and only the gas generator line is need to be pressured more because the combustion pressure in the gas generator is much higher than that of the combustor. Basically, all the oxidizer goes into the gas generator and than to the combustor, thus the auxiliary LOx pump is not critically necessary. However, for the various reasons, the LOx line requires a booster pump. A gas generator after burning cycle engines produces relatively high specific impuls than that of the open cycle engines. Thus it is suitable for upper stages of launch vehicles.

  • Two types of pressurization system and low weight feeding piping system are developed. With sub-system tests, ullage pressure control performance was verified for 1 step and 2 step pressurization system and the feeding performance of feeding piping system was also verified. The weight of the feeding piping system is low enough for the application of launch vehicle. In addition, LOX conditioning system is developed for avoiding geysering and LOX temperature rise. Integrated performance was verified through integrated on-board feeding system performance tests.

  • Performance tests of a liquid-oxygen pump were carried out using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a working fluid in a cryogenic turbopump test facility in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The tests were performed at 30-55% of the design rotational speed, and the results were compared with those from a water test. The experimental results confirmed the similarity of the hydraulic performance, which allows the prediction of the pump performance at a design rotational speed of 20,000 rpm. The overall cavitation performance of the pump in the cryogenic environment was better than that in the water environment for all ranges of flow rates and rotational speeds. Critical cavitation number at the design flow rate was determined as 0.012 from the cryogenic test, and as 0.024 from the water test. The improved cavitation performance is due to the thermodynamic effect in cryogenic fluids.

  • In case of liquid rocket using turbopump, the inner pressure of liquid oxygen tank is maintained low, so vaporization of LOX is generally occurred. This vaporization tendency increases as the inlet helium gas temperature is higher. For estimating the amount of helium in the rocket system, the LOX vaporization phenomena should be carefully considered. In this paper, Inner process of LOX tank is analyzed by two phase flow modeling. the vaporization rate and required Helium mass is investigated with varying inlet helium temperature and heat transfer coefficient.

  • In the design of KSLV-II, there is a scenario in which supercooled liquid oxygen is supplied to prevent a geysering phenomenon in the oxidizer pipe and a cavitation phenomenon at the pump inlet. To verify this condition in the engine development test phase, a system that supplies supercooled liquid oxygen to the engine was applied in the engine combustion test facility. In this system, supercooling methods using a vacuum ejector and using helium injection to the tank were appied. Both tests were carried out for about 17 minutes. Supercooling results of about 3.3K for the ejector test and about 2.2K for the helium injection test were obtained at the 50% level of the tank.
