Effect of Electrolyte on Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of AZ91 Cast Magnesium Alloy Coated by Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation Method (플라즈마 전해 산화처리한 AZ91 주조마그네슘합금의 기계적 및 부식 특성에 미치는 전해질의 영향)

  • The effect of electrolyte on mechanical and corrosion properties of AZ91 magnesium alloy by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) method was investigated. The coating layers formed in the silicate and the aluminate electrolytes showed porous structures. The small pores were randomly distributed on the coatings formed in aluminate electrolyte while the coatings formed in silicate electrolyte showed much bigger pores. In the aluminate electrolyte, the coatings were composed of Mg, MgO and $MgAl_2O_4$, whereas Mg, MgO, $MgAl_2O_4$ and $Mg_2SiO_4$ were identified in the coatings formed in silicate electrolyte. The hardness of coatings in the silicate electrolyte was higher than that of coating grown in the aluminate electrolyte. The AZ91 alloy coated in the silicate electrolyte had higher tensile strength and elongation than that coated in the aluminate electrolyte. In addition, the coatings formed in the silicate electrolyte showed much better corrosion resistance compared to the coatings formed in the aluminate electrolyte.

Reaction Characteristics of Elemental and Oxidized Mercury with Fly Ash Components (비산재 성분과 원소 및 산화수은의 반응특성)

  • Fly ash has capacity to oxidize or adsorb mercury in a flue gas. Mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies of fly ash vary depending on the properties of fly ash. This study was designed to understand reaction characteristics of mercury with fly ash components. The fly ash components were tested to determine their oxidation and adsorption capabilities for elemental mercury and oxidized mercury. A sample was synthesized with fly ash components and tested. The test results were compared with those of the fly ash sample obtained from a coal-fired power plant. $Fe_2O_3$, CuO and carbon black showed higher oxidation or adsorption efficiency for elemental mercury while CaO, MgO, CuO and carbon black showed higher adsorption efficiency for mercury chloride. In addition, the synthesized sample showed comparable mercury oxidation and adsorption efficiencies to the fly ash sample.

  • The reaction of methanol-water mixture to $CO_2$ and $H_2$ on alkaline earth metal-copper-zinc oxide has been studied in the temperature range of 150 ${\sim}\;300^{\circ}C$. Generally the addition of the alkaline earth metal to Cu/ZnO resulted in an enhancement of selectivity for $CO_2$ formation and a reduction of catalytic activity. Measurable activities were found from 150$^{\circ}C$, 200$^{\circ}C$, and 250$^{\circ}C$ on Mg/Cu/ZnO, Ca/Cu/ZnO, and Ba/Cu/ZnO respectively. However, the highest selectivity for $CO_2$ formation was observed in Ba/Cu/ZnO catalyst at 250$^{\circ}C$. The effect of alkaline earth metal or ZnO on the reactivity was investigated using temperature programmed desorption of $CO_2$ or temperature programmed reduction with $H_2$ over catalysts respectively. It was found that $CO_2$ interacts more strongly in the sequence of MgO < CaO < BaO and ZnO decereases the reduction temperature of CuO. From the results, it was suggested that ZnO activates $H_2$ in the redox process of Cu component and alkaline earth metals adsorbs $CO_2$ in the catalytic process.

  • 용융탄산염 연료전지(MCFC)는 $650^{\circ}C$에서 작동하는 고온형 연료전지 시스템이다. 이 시스템은 천연가스 등을 개질하여 생산된 수소를 바로 전기로 생산할 수 있는 시스템으로 열효율이 높으며, 현재 대체 발전시스템으로 각광을 받고 있다. MCFC는 개질방식에 따라 내부개질 방식과 외부개질 방식이 있다. 내부개질 방식은 수소를 생산하는 개질기가 스택내부에 장착된 형식으로 천연가스를 스택내부에서 개질하여 바로 전기를 생산하는 방식이다. 이 내부개질반응에 사용되는 촉매로는 알루미나에 고함량 (약 50 wt.%)으로 담지된 니켈(Ni) 계열촉매이 주로 쓰이고 있다. 이 고함량으로 담지된 촉매는 대부분 높은 활성을 보인다. 비교적 낮은 온도 운전조건 (약 $580{\sim}620^{\circ}C$)을 가지는 MCFC 내부개질에 적용하기 위해서는 활성점인 니켈을 최대한 담지체에 고르게 분산 시켜야한다. 이를 위해서 MgO를 이용하여 촉매의 활성점을 높게 분산시키는 연구를 진행 하였다. 촉매를 제조하는 방법으로 요소(urea)를 이용한 균일용액침전법을 이용하였다. 니켈함량은 50 wt.%로 고정을 한 다음, MgO 양과 $Al_2O_3$ 양을 각각 0 ~ 45 wt.%와 5 ~ 50 wt.%로 조절하면서 촉매를 제조하여 그 특성들을 분석하였다. 물성을 비교하기 위해서, X-선 회절분석 (XRD) 및 TPR, 물리화학흡착 실험을 하였다. 촉매의 활성을 살펴보기 위해서, fresh 상태 및 피독 상태에서 메탄수증기 개질활성 실험을 실시하였다. MgO 함량이 없거나 적은 촉매에서는 높은 BET surface area와 작은 NiO, metallic Ni 결정 크기가 나타났다. 반면 MgO 함량이 높은 촉매에서 낮은 BET surface area와 비교적 큰 NiO, metallic Ni 결정 크기가 나타났다. 또한 XRD 분석에서 MgO 함량이 증가할 수 록 MgO 결정 피크가 명확히 나타났으며, $MgAl_2O_4$ 피크는 나타나지 않았다. TPR 분석에서 촉매들의 환원 피크를 측정한 결과, 저함량의 MgO를 포함한 촉매는 $700^{\circ}C$ 부근에 환원 피크가 관찰되었고 MgO가 고함량인 촉매는 환원 피크가 $400^{\circ}C$ 부근에서 관찰되었다. 촉매의 초기 fresh 상태에서의 활성은 고함량 MgO를 포함한 Ni-90M10A 샘플을 제외하고 모든 촉매가 거의 비슷하게 나타났다. 그러나 $K_2CO_3$ 피독 상태에서는 MgO 함량이 증가할 수 록 활성이 좋지 않았음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 MgO가 소량 포함된 촉매의 경우 fresh 상태에서는 우수한 물성과 활성을 보이지만, 피독상태에서는 MgO가 포함되지 않은 Ni-$Al_2O_3$ 촉매가 우수한 활성을 보였다.

  • Recording materials are the valuable historical and cultural parts themselves as well as the methods for exchanging informations. Therefore, the appropriate conservation treatments should be conducted to the recording materials respectively. In case of the paper records, some particular conservation treatments such as a deacidification and a sterilization are necessary to prevent both bio and chemical deteriorations. In this research, the nano-scaled ZnO and MgO with 10~30nm size were prepared for the effective and stable conservation treatment of the paper records. Deacidification and sterilization effect of nano compounds were excellent and since nano compounds had almost 100% purity(free from Pb, Cd, As), the additional damages caused by the heavy and toxic metals should not be occur to the books and papers.

  • Although the lightly burnt MgO at $850{\sim}1000^{\circ}C$ has expansibility, it does not lead to unsound concrete. The expansion of MgO could compensate for shrinkage of concrete for a long-term, because the hydration of MgO occurs at a slow pace. Recently, the study and application of mineral admixture such as fly ash and blast furnace slag have increased for the hydration heat reduction, durability improvement, and reducing $CO_2$ emission in the construction industry. Thus, it is necessary to research on the concrete that contains both a mineral admixture and MgO as an expansion agent. This study investigates fundamental properties of fly ash concrete with lightly burnt MgO through various experiments. The adiabatic temperature test results showed that the fly ash concrete with MgO of the 5% replacement ratio had the slower pace of the temperature rise and the lower final temperature than the fly ash concrete. The influences of MgO on long-term compressive strength varied depending on water-binder ratio, and the long-term length change test results indicated the expansion effects of the FA concrete containing MgO.

A Study on the MgO Protective Layer Deposited by Oxygen-Neutral-Beam-Assisted Deposition in AC PDP (산소 중성빔으로 보조증착된 MgO 보호막을 갖는 AC PDP의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The magnesium oxide (MgO) protective layer plays an important role in plasma display panels (PDPs). Our previous work demonstrated that the properties of MgO thin film could be improved, which were deposited by Ion-Beam-Assisted Deposition (IBAD). However arc discharge always occurs during the IBAD process. To avoid this problem, Oxygen-Neutral-Beam-Assisted Deposition (NBAD) is used to deposit MgO thin films in this paper. The energy of the oxygen neutral beam was used as the parameter to control the deposition. The experimental results showed that the oxygen neutral beam energy was effective in determining in structural and discharge characteristics. The lowest firing inception voltage, the highest brightness and the highest luminous efficiency were obtained when the MgO thin film was deposited with an oxygen neutral beam energy of 300eV. The surface morphology of MgO thin film was also analyzed using AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy).

Magnetic Properties of Spherocarb Supported Nickel Particles (탄소에 분산된 니켈 입자의 자기 특성)

  • Dispersed nickel particles on Spherocarb were prepared at 540$^{\circ}C$ in various reaction atmosphere. Magnetic properties of these samples were determined, and results were compared with those of unsupported and MgO supported nickel particles. It was shown that nickel react primarily with carbon regardless of reducing atmosphere. In addition, apparent possibility of nickel-carbon interaction was discussed.

Hydrochloric Acid Leaching Behavior of Mechanically Activated Black Dross (기계적 활성화처리한 블랙드로스의 염산 침출)

  • Effect of ball milling treatment on the hydrochloric acid leaching performance of black dross was investigated to recover alumina. Ball milling time and speed showed limited effect on the leaching behavior of the alumina in the mechanically dross. Under the optimum mechanical activation condition (for 1h at 700 rpm), the leaching of alumina in hydrochloric acid solution was significantly affected by leaching time and reaction temperature. MgO was completely dissolved in most of the leaching conditions, while a small amount of Ca, Fe, Si and Ti oxides was dissolved. Although 80% of alumina was dissolved, the dissolved minor components such as Ca, Fe, Mg, Si and Ti oxides should be separated to recover pure alumina solution.
