한국산 산호충류의 분류학적 연구의 일환으로 1968년부터 2000년까지 삼면해역과 인근 도서지방에서 채집되어진 해변말미잘류 중 중근아족과 창사아족을 동정 및 분류하였다. 그 결과 8과 10속 11종이 밝혀졌으며, 이 중 유사말미잘(Isanthus capensis), 빛말미잘 (Actinostola carlgreni), 풍선말미잘 (Stomphia cuccinea), 호리병말미잘 (Parasicyonis actinostoloides) 및 섬유세닐말미잘 (Metridium senile)의 5종은 한국미기록종으로 밝혀졌다.

오스트레일리아의 대보초에서 채집된 무척추동물로부터 나온 요각류 7신종을 기재하였다. 이 요각류들은 석산호 Pocillopora verrucosa (Ellis and Solander)에 공생하는 Panjakus bidentis, 석산호 Acropora squarrosa (Ehrenberg)에 공생하는 Scyphuliger humesi, S. vicious 및 S. placidus, 복족류 Glossodoris atromarginata (Cuvier)에 공생하는 Doridicola parapatulus, 바다맨드라미 일종에 공생하는 Ruhtra germinata, 그리고 바다나리 Comanthina belli (Carpenter)에 공생하는 Collocheres oribullatus이다.

Taxonomic accounts are given to four species of Jania, Rhodophyta from Korea; J. adhaerens Lamouroux, J. nipponica (Yendo) Yendo, J. radiata (Yendo) Yendo and J. yenoshimensis (Yendo) Yendo. J. adhaerens is an epiphyte and characterized by massive tufts with decussate-dichotomous branches. J. nipponica growing on the rocks is different from other plants by erect tuft with low-angle dichotomous branches. J. radiata has a small epiphytic thallus (5 mm) and flat, flabellate-dichotomous branches. And J. yenoshimensis grows on the rocks in sublittoral regions and has compressed, fastigate, regular-dichotomous branches. This species is distinguished form others by the formation of slender moniliform branchlets. Among these, J. yenoshimensis is first reported in Korea in this study.

한국산 산호충류의 계통분류학적 연구의 일환으로 1984년부터 1991년까지 남해 연안과 여러 도서지방(34개 지역)으로 부터 채집된 말미잘류 및 꽃말미잘류를 동정 분류하였다. 그 결과 2아강 3목 16속 21종이 밝혀졌으며 이 중 해변 말미잘 목에 속하는 Flosmaris mutsuensis, Hormathia andersoni 및 Verrillactis paguri 3종은 한국미기록종이었다.

동굴지역은 고생대상부에 속하는 선계의 대석회암통의 말기인 정선석회암층이 널리 분포하고 있다. 이 석회암층은 회백색세일이 개재하고 있는 지질구조로 되고 있다. 이 지층은 지질년대를 편년에 의하여 계산하면 대략 4억∼5 억년에 해당되는 오래된 지층이다.(중략)
