To figure out the material characteristics about slag and raw materials which are founded in iron product sites in Seosan area, we used XRF, EDS to analysis chemical compositions. Also we observe the microstructure by microscope and SEM. To identify the mineral component, XRD analysis was used and to assume the provenance of the raw material, lead isotope ratio analysis was used. From the results, we figure out that slags are non-ferrous created when metal was refined. Also, main tissue of slags were Fayalite, Galena, Magnetite, and raw materials were identified as mineral of Galena, Anglesite, Pyrite etc. From the result about lead isotope ratio analysis, we found out most samples are classified as the Western Gyeonggi massif in South Korea. Especially three of raw materials and slag samples which collected in the Seosan Doseongri was presumed to be the provenance. We figure out that slags we analyzed were made in non-ferrous metal smelting process and especially that were more likely to smelt from Seosan Doseongri. If various slags in this area are analysed by someone, It will contribute understanding non-ferrous metal refining process as well as metal refining which are composed.
The objectives of this study are to estimate the return period of flash flood and evaluate its appropriateness based on the actual observation events for small mountainous watersheds in the Han River basin. For these goals, Flash Flood Guidance (FFG) was estimated from 1-hr duration Threshold Runoff (TR) and Saturation Deficit (SD) of soil moisture which was derived from Sejong University Rainfall Runoff (SURR) model. Then, the return period of flash flood was calculated by comparing the rainfall quantile to the 1-hr duration rainfall that exceeded the FFG during the past period (2002-2010). Moreover, the appropriateness of the estimated return period of flash flood was evaluated by using the observation events from 2011 to 2016. The results of the return period of flash flood ranged from 1.1 to 19.9 years with a mean and a standard deviation of 1.6 and 1.1 years, respectively. Also, the result of the appropriateness indicated that 83% of the return periods derived from observation events were within the return period of flash flood range. Therefore, the estimated return period of flash flood could be considered as highly appropriate.
This study examines the results of analyses of the lead isotope ratio and chemical composition of lead glass and green glaze from ancient Northeast Asia in order to suggest their production sites and reveal further characteristics. The comparison of the lead isotope ratio of lead glass and green glaze from two Baekje remains in Iksan-the Wanggung-ri Site and Mireuksa Temple Site-suggests that they were produced to the west of the South Gyeonggi Massif (Zone 4) using lead extracted from the same area. With a few exceptions, it has proved difficult to identify the production sites of most of the green-glazed roof tiles from Unified Silla-period Buddhist temples across Northeast Asia. The major component of the lead glass from Baekje, Silla, China, and Japan during the seventh century is PbO, SiO2, Al2O3, CuO, and Fe2O3, with a ratio of PbO and SiO2 of 70 and 30 wt.%, respectively. The green-glazed roof tiles excavated from a temple from the Unified Silla period have a high proportion of lead, ranging from 64 to 90 wt.%. Green-glazed lozenge tiles excavated from the Sacheonwangsa Temple site in Gyeongju were shown to contain PbO, SiO2, Al2O3, and CuO, a similar composition with lead glass. An experiment was conducted to reproduce a glaze according to the production method mentioned in the Zō hotokesho sakumotsu-chō (Buddhist statue workshop crop book) in the Shosoin Repository. In this experiment, an identical ratio of PbO was observed for Japanese green-glazed ceramics from the eighth to eleventh century as that found in Chinese lead-glazed ceramics excavated from kilns operated from the seventh to tenth century in Henan. This indicates that production methods for lead glass and glaze were shared across Northeast Asia.
The travel time of flash floods along mountain streams is mainly governed by reach-average velocity, rather than by the point velocity of the locations of interest. Reach-average velocity is influenced by various factors such as stream geometry, streambed materials, and the hydraulic roughness of streams. In this study, the reach-average velocity in mountain streams was measured for storm periods using rhodamine dye tracing. The point cloud data obtained from a LiDAR survey was used to extract the average hydraulic roughness height, such as Ra, Rmax, and Rz. The size distribution of the streambed materials (D50, D84) was also considered in the estimation of the roughness height. The field experiments revealed that the reach-average velocities had a significant relationship with flow discharges (v = 0.5499Q0.6165 ), with an R2 value of 0.77. The root mean square error in the roughness height of the Ra-based estimation (0.45) was lower than those of the other estimations (0.47-1.04). Among the parameters for roughness height estimation, the Ra -based roughness height was the most reliable and suitable for developing the reach-average velocity equation for estimating the travel time of flood waves in mountain streams.
With its rapid velocity and wide deposition, debris flow is a natural disaster that causes loss of human life and destruction of facility. To design effective debris barriers, impact force of debris flow should be first considered. Debris flow velocity is one of the key features to estimate the impact force of debris flow. In this study, we conducted small-scale flume experiments to analyze flow characteristics of debris flow, and determine flow resistance coefficients with different slope gradients and sediment mixtures. Flow velocity significantly varied with flume slope and mixture type. Debris flow depth decreased as slope increased, but difference in depth between sediment mixtures was not significant. Among flow resistance coefficients, Chezy coefficient ($C_1$) showed not only relatively highest goodness of fit, but also constant value ($20.19m^{-1/2}\;s^{-1}$) regardless the scale of debris flow events. The overall results suggested that $C_1$ can be most appropriately used to estimate flow velocity, the key factor of assessing impact force, in wide range of debris flow scale.
It is well-known that loop effect of the stage-discharge relationship is formulated based on many field observations especially for the sand rivers. Theoretical understandings of the loop effect for the sand rivers have been widely provided, based on the facts that it is driven by the flood wave propagation and bed form changes over the given flood period. However, very few theoretical studies or field observations associated with loop-rating curves in the gravel or rock-bed mountain streams have been attempted so far, due particularly to the difficulties in the accurate discharge measurement during the flood in such field conditions. The present paper aims to report a unique loop-rating curve measured at a gravel and rock-bed mountain stream based on the flood discharge observation acquired during the typhoon, Muifa that passed nearby Jeju Island in summer of 2011. As velocity instrumentation, a non-intrusive Surface Velocity Doppler Radar to be suitable for the flood discharge measurement was utilized, and discharges were consecutively measured for every hour. Interestingly, the authors found that the hysteresis of the loop-rating curve was adverse compared to the typical trend of the sand bed streams, which means that the discharge of the rising limb is smaller than the falling limb at the same stage. We carefully speculate that the adverse trend of the loop-rating curve in the gravel bed was caused by the bed resistance change that works differently from the sand bed case.
The chemical compositions and lead isotope ratio of Poong-Tag(wind bell) bell excavated from Wanggyeong site, Gyeongju have analyzed by ICP and TIMS. The analysis result of chemical composition of Poong-Tag shows that it consists of 92:4 ratio of Cu:Sn. Other 8 minor elements(Pb, Zn, Fe, Ag, Ni, As, Sb and Co) show the concentration of below 0.2% respectively. This result means that Poong-Tag have made using highly purified Cu and Sn ore. For the study of provenance of raw material with the lead isotope ratio, the origin of the raw material of Poong-Tag can not be presumed owing to beyond the scope. The observation result of microstructure of Poong-Tag show the dendrite structure made through casting process. The chemical composition, microstructure, and lead isotope ratio of Poong-Tag excavated from Wanggyeong site, Gyeongju can be used as fundamental data to compare with other Poong-Tag of different regions and periods.
This study tried to find the clue to Seokrok province by comparing Seokrok used in painting culture properties with Seokrok ore from domestic occurrence and imported Seokrok ore. To this end, chemical and mineralogical characteristics of painting cultural properties were identified with portable X-ray Florescence (p-XRF), micro X-ray diffraction (micro XRD) and SEM/EDS Analysis. To obtain Pb isotopic ratio, the Pb contained in Seokrok has been analyzed with Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer. Atacamite (or botallackite) and small quantity of brochantite were identified from Seokrok in Dancheong, and malachite was also identified from Buddhist painting besides those two ingredients. Without distinction of type, most Seokrok used in painting cultural properties is atacamite composed of Cu and Cl. From Pb isotope analysis, it was found that Seokrok in painting cultural properties was closer to that of north Korea, north China and Japan than south Korea as in regional division for East North Asia suggested by Mabuchi. The Pb isotopic ratio of domestic green mineral belongs to the distribution of Seokrok inside the painting cultural properties but imported malachite showed considerably difference. Considering the fact that atacamite, the main mineral of Seokrok in painting cultural properties is rarely produced from southern mine of the Korean Peninsula and the result of Pb isotope analysis.

The characteristics of deposits formed by the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, dissecting the mountains such as Byungpung Mt. and Samin Mt. in western part of Damyang county, Jeonmam province. Results from field survey and bore hole logging by KIGAM are used in interpreting depositional environment, in this study. By the result of deposits near of the channels Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon, and main channel of Youngsan River, the depth of sediment layers in this area is 4~7m, far thinner than formerly estimated. Weathered material of local rocks forms the base of the sedimentary layers. It can be assumed that the location channel of the Youngsan river has been stable ever since the start of the sedimentary events. Sediment particles of tributaries are angular than those of Youngsan River. Particles are larger and sorting is poor. It is interpreted as mount flash flood deposits. Main sources of sediments at the valley bottom or deposition dominated area are the terrace deposits or slope deposits over the gentle foot-slope or front of surrounding mountains. Some particles show polygonal cracking on the surface originated from the strong chemical weathering, while most of these has high angularity. It means various geomorphic processes operate to produce and transport the particles in this area.Isolated hills within the sedimentary plains are made with weathered materials of local bedrock. In the case of foot-slope of the hills, thin sedimentary layers are found. So it can be concluded that surface features of deposition zone of the Daejon-cheon and Soobuk-cheon is formed by the filling of lower part of the valley and its feature partly controlled by the relief of the weathering front.
Material characteristics and provenance interpretation of the raw materials for the stone moulds of bronze artifacts excavated in Galdong Prehistoric site were studied. The stone moulds are made of igneous hornblendite with coarse-grained holocrystalline textures. The surface color shows greenish grey to dark green with greasy luster. The value of magnetic susceptibility of the moulds ranges from 19.2 to 71.0 (mean ; $39.2{\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit).High value of magnetic susceptibility indicates high contents of magnetite as a ferromagnetic mineral and the wide range of the values are due to heterogeneous distribution of magnetite. These are characteristics of basic igneous rocks. The rock-forming minerals of the moulds mainly consist of amphibole, plagioclase and biotite. Pyroxene, chlorite and opaque minerals are also rarely present. A large quantity of carbon was detected on the dark black crust near the surface of the moulds by quantitative analysis. Geological field survey was carried out to identify a source of the raw materials of the stone moulds around Galdong site. Hornblendite or gabbroic rocks being similar to the moulds forming rock occur at Daeseongri, Sikcheonri and Gyodongri in Jangsoo, and Illdaeri in Namwon about 50 kilometers away from the site in a straight line. They have similarity with the moulds forming rock in magnetic susceptibility ranging from 16.1 to 72.4 (mean ; $39.9{\times}10^{-3}$ SI unit). Among those hornblendite or gabbroic rocks, one in Jangsoo area is the most similar to the moulds forming rock on the basis of petrological and mineralogical characteristics. Comparing normalized patterns of major, minor, rare earth and immobile elements contents of the moulds to them of hornblendite in Jangsoo area, geochemical evolution trend and behavior characteristics show affinities between them. It suggests that the moulds forming rock and hornblendite in Jangsoo area have been originated from cogenetic magma. This hornblendite is easy to engrave an inscription or detail graphics on the surface because of its softness, and has good thermal conductivity. Hornblendite in Sikcheonri, Jangsoo is particularly produced and used for stone wares until the present day. Therefore, it is probable that the stone materials of the moulds has been imported from Daeseongri, Sikcheonri and Gyodongri in Jangsoo area. However, it cannot be completely excluded the possibility that the material of the moulds was supplied from Illdaeri in Namwon area appearing the same type of hornblendite on a small outcrops. It is necessary to carry out further archaeological studies to identify several possibilities of migration process of raw materials.
