  • This study aims to suggest a containerization plan for non-standardized cargo; it also reveals the significance of containerization in facilitating freight inducement and cargo creation for increasing the competitiveness of the Gwangyang port container terminal and checking excessive competition among terminal operators. Therefore, this study suggested a containerization plan and its significance by dividing 14 items, ones with low containerization ratios or undergoing containerization, bulk, and liquid cargoes. In the case of general cargo, it will be necessary to raise the utilization rate by remodeling a general container or improving cargo loading techniques. In the case of bulk cargo, it will be necessary to exploit the benefits of containerization in preventing product deterioration due to rain, facilitating the sale of small orders, ensuring clean cargo handling, and reducing logistics cost, among others. In the case of liquid cargo, it will be necessary to order and sell liquid cargo in small quantities by using superior quality, safe, and durable Flexitank or Flexibag products, which offer transportation convenience and reduce time and costs.

  • Bulk cargo loaded into ship can be damaged by various kinds reasons. This paper aims to analyze about cargo damage of coil carrier ship due to condensation. Condensation is the formation of liquid drops of water from water vapor. Condensation consists of small drops of water which form when warm water vapour or steam touches a cold surface such as a window. In general, condensation have occurred by temperature difference at large building and ship's tank. It is phenomenon that can occur often to oceangoing vessel moving temperature difference places in similar time. This paper proposes a new method using dehumidification device and fan heater to prevent bulk cargo damage of coil carrier ship from condensation.

  • Due to the collapse of corrugated bulkheads subject to accidental flooding which is thought to be a primary cause of bulk carrier losses International Maritime Organization(IMO), the International Association of Classification Societies(IACS) and the leading classification societies are taking a growing concern for the structural safety of corrugated bulkheads of bulk carriers. To prevent progressive collapse of corrugated bulkhead in flooded condition particularly of forward cargo ho1d they try to make rules which require reinforcement of corrugated bulkhead structure. However, we are still confronted with the urgent problem of more accurate and efficient ultimate strength assessment for corrugated bulkheads. This paper develops a special purpose nonlinear FE program for analyzing progressive collapse behavior of corrugated bulkheads subject to lateral pressure loads. As verification examples, the program is applied to collapse strength analysis of steel corrugated bulkhead test model.

  • The robust design technology which can determine design variables getting best performance function with insensitivity to the environment noise, is an important method for improving the performance of products at low cost. Applying the robust design technology in ship design, Koh et al[10] introduced the planing hull design. This paper reports the application this technology to a 150K bulk carrier which has many design variables and shows that the robust design technology is superior to optimization technique in practical use.

  • The Consultative Meeting of the Convention on the Prevention of Marine Pollution by Dumping of Wastes and other matter, 1972 (London Convention 1972) has requested to International Maritime Organization (IMO) Marine Environmental Protection Committee to collaborate and help clarify a boundary issue between International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Shops, 1973 as modified by the Protocol of 1978 (MARPOL) and the London Convention concerning 'dumping' versus 'discharges' during normal operations of ships in 2004, and subsequently established a Joint London Convention/MEPC Correspondence Group. The Contracting Parties to London Convention expressed their environmental concerns on the broad interpretation of the "cargo-associated wastes" by the States, which could be discharged by ships under MARPOL. Regulatory regimes for the cargo residues appear to vary among states. Some countries require fur ships to discharge their cargo wastes into the port reception facility and IMO also recommends doing so. This paper examines the related current national and international legal texts for the regulation of disposal of wastes from ships in order to analyze the current global concern on the marine pollution associated with waste discharge during operations of ships. In particular, we attempt to evaluate the likely marine environmental consequences arising from the disposal of cargo residue using an hypothetical case for the coal cargo residue among bulk cargos in this paper, since location, magnitude and frequency of the discharge of coal cargo residues into the sea adjacent to Korean Peninsula are not readily available. The cargo residues may be discharged to the sea according to MARPOL 73/78; however, its marine environmental consequences can be significant depending upon the characteristics and amounts of wastes to be discharged. Also the public tolerance of the environmental consequences would be widely different among nations. Multilateral environmental agreements, in general, more strictly apply their rules if there are other options to disposal at sea, i.e. port reception facility in this case. Therefore, port reception facilities for the wastes generated by ships are recommended to be further constructed in major national ports in order to reduce the risk of environmental damages during the operations of ships.

  • Longitudinal hull girder vibration has not been occurred severely since 1960's. However, recent low speed diesel driven ships equipped with overcritical shafting system, can be excited heavily in longitudinal direction by shaft axial farce coupled with torsional vibration. In this study the characteristics of longitudinal hull girder vibration of a 73,000 deadweight bulk carrier were investigated through onboard measurement, exciter test, and 3-D FEM analysis. Results showed that the longitudinal hullgirder vibration may occur in the ship which is not set up the barred speed range in engine operation. Moreover, this vibration occurs. only during the low speed voyage in harbour depending upon the ship loading condition.

  • The environmental regulations for CO2 emissions from the ship have been established recently, and fuel oil price has been increased continuously. In order to overcome these circumstances, Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) have been developed continuously to reduce the fuel oil consumption and improve the propulsive efficiency. This paper describes the trial performance of PBCF (Propeller Boss Cap Fins), SCHNEEKLUTH duct, Asymmetric rudder bulb and Mewis duct applied to handy-size bulk carriers. As a result, SCHNEEKLUTH duct is more effective than other energy saving devices at the reducing the fuel oil consumption and the improvement of the propulsive efficiency. In addition, it is confirmed that SCHNEEKLUTH duct is really effective in the vibration of the deck house. And the fuel oil consumption can also be reduced through main engine de-rating.

  • The Protocol adopted in Sep. 1997 included the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78, which entered into force on 19 May 2005. Revision for the accept MARPOL Annex VI with make public on 29 Dec. 2005 and enforce on 29 Jun. 2006. For all that not installation at oil terminal or if installed do not used. The purpose of this study is to research and evaluate the methods of sampling and analysis, and the pollution measure of existed VOCs during the bulk liquid cargo operation at vessels. As the sampling instrument of VOCs, Tedlar bag has the effect of decrease in concentration by the chemical reaction and absorption, and the method using the solvent extraction has error cause because of the extraction, the absorption tube has error by the breakthrough. But canister is the best sampling instrument because of having no sampling mistake. The study on VOCs emission is not sufficient for the research on the pollution cause and the analysis data on the HAP during the bulk liquid cargo operation at vessels. Hence, monitoring on the management hazardous VOCs need to be continued during the cargo operation at vessels and VOCs management field must be study for the make progress at a good pace for reason of crew's health.
