  • To evaluate tobacco quality, several mathods including sensory test, or measurement of some toxic compounds such as tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide in cigarette smoke have been used. However, many detrimental effects of smoking on the physiological functions including respiratory system reported were turned out to be the action of reactive oxygen species. Therefore, the amounts of oxygen free radicals such as superoxide, hydroxyl radical, even hydrogen peroxide in the cigarette smoke are thought the very important factors. In the present study, we have determined the generation of superoxide and the content of hydrogen peroxide using superoxide dismutase and catalase in the gas and particulate phases obtained from cigarette smoke, respectively. In the aqueous extracts of total particulate materials, suproxide and hydrogen peroxide were detected, and there was an excellent correlation between oxygen tint of oxygen free radicals in cigarette smoke may be a useful index for evaluation of cigarette quality in the aspect of smoking and health.

The Role of Jugular Venous Oxyhemoglobin Saturation Monitoring During Cardic Surgery (개심술 중 경정맥 산소포화도의 역할)

  • Postoperative brain damage is one of most serious complications of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). To prevent brain damage during CPB, adequate cerebral perfusion for cerebral oxygen demand should be maintained. This study monitored jugular venous oxyhemoglobin saturation ($SjO_2$), which reflects the overall balance of cerebral oxygen supply and demand, intermittently in 10 patients undergoing cardiac surgery. At the initiation of CPB, in spite of a significant decrease in mean arterial pressure, $SjO_2$ did not change, and it was stable during the hypothermic period of CPB. But a significan reduction in $SjO_2$ was observed during the rewarming period, and $SjO_2$ had an inverse linear correlation with esophageal temperature. Furthermore, the percent decrease of $SjO_2$ was related to rewarming speed. Therefore, therapeutic approaches for $SjO_2$ desaturation include slower rewarming, increasing cerebral blood flow, decreasing the cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen, increasing oxygen content, and increasing perfusion flow rate.

  • 수전해(electrochemical water splitting)는 연료전지의 가역적 역반응을 이용하여 물로부터 수소와 산소를 발생시키는 기술이다. 산소는 음극에서 발생하는데, 이 때 음극 표면은 고농도의 산소 음이온 및 라디칼에 장시간 노출된다. 때문에 기계적, 화학적 내구성이 우수한 전극재를 사용할 필요가 있다. 불용성 전극 (dimensionally stable anode, DSA)은 이러한 기술적 요구사항을 잘 만족하는 상용화 된 전극이다. 티타늄이나 티타늄 합금 표면에 촉매를 미량 반복 살포하여 산화물 형태의 매우 견고한 표면을 형성함으로서 내구성을 확보한다. 그러나, 보통 DSA 제조 기법의 특징에 따라 다공성 표면 구조를 사용하지는 않기 때문에 생산 과정이 복잡하고 비용이 많이 발생하는 문제를 여전히 나타내고 있다. 본 연구는 상기 문제를 개선하기 위한 수전해용 음극 제조 기술에 관한 연구이다. 티타늄과 티타늄 합금은 동일한 양극산화 기술 적용이 가능하다는 점을 이용하여 티타늄 기판으로부터 다공성 구조를 형성함으로써 바인더의 사용을 배제하였다. 단일공정양극산화기법 (single-step anodization)을 이용하여 $IrO_2$$RuO_2$를 도핑함으로써 TiO2에 촉매능을 부여하였다. 제조된 나노튜브들의 구조적 특징을 HR-TEM (High-resolution transmission electron microscope)과 FE-SEM (Field-emission scanning electron microscope)으로 분석하고 SAED (selective area electron diffraction) 패턴을 분석하여 전극재의 결정성을 확인하였다. 알칼라인 분위기에서 일으킨 산소발생반응 (oxygen evolution reaction, OER)의 LSV (linear sweep voltammetry) 결과를 XPS (X-ray photoelectron microscoscopy) 결과와 연관지어 촉매 표면 구조와 과전압의 관계를 해석하였다. LSV 결과로부터 Tafel 분석을 연달아 수행함으로써 전극의 속도결정단계를 정의하였다. 최종적으로 사이클 테스트 통하여 DSA로써의 성능을 평가하였다.

Synthesis of Nanosized TiO$_2$ Powder by Chemical Vapor Condensation Process(1) (화학기상응축법에 의한 TiO$_2$ 나노분말의 합성 (1))

  • Nanosized TiO2 powders were synthesized using the chemical vapor conduensation (CVC) process with various precursor feeding rates (0.37 and 0.752 ml/min) and oxygen flow rates(1-2slm) conditions and powder characteristics were investigated in terms of formation of nanosized powder varying with the above processing conditions. For this study the main thermodynamic and fluid dynamic factors -supersaturation ratio collision frequency and residence time-were theoretically established and compared to the characteristics of formed TiO2 powder. The loosely combined anatase phase powders (including less than 3%of rutile phase) having 20-30nm crystallite size were obtained at overall conditions. The particle size and th degree of agglomeration for a precursor flow rate of 0.376 ml/min turn out to be smaller than for a flow rate of 0.742ml/min. And the decreasing of particles size and particle size distribution were observed with increasing oxygen flow rate as the residence time and collision frequency were reduced by increasing oxygen flow rate,. It appears that further scrutiny is needed to elucidate the influence of the individual thermodynamic and kinetic parameters mdependently.

The Effects of Red-ginseng Intaking on Free Radical Produced During Aerobic Exercise in the Elderly (홍삼복용이 노인들의 유산소 운동시 발생된 활성산소에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of 12 weeks red-ginseng intaking on MDA(malondialdehyde) produced during aerobic exercise in the young and elderly women. Sixteen volunteers agreed to participate and were placed in 2 groups: in the young(20-25 yrs), red-ginseng intake group(n=8), in the elderly(60-69 yrs), red-ginseng intaking group(n=8). The subjects who joined this study were asked to take 2.7g of red-ginseng powder capsule per day before the meal for 12 weeks(3 times/day). MDA(from blood samples) were collected at rest, just after the submaximal exercise, and 30 minutes after the exercise(cycle ergometer riding) at the beginning and the end of the 12-weeks program. After 12 weeks of red-ginseng intaking, young and elderly groups showed the decreased MDA significantly at rest(41.57%, 28.59%), just after the exercise(45.96%, 40.74%). and 30 minutes after the exercise(37.37%, 32.68%). These results indicate that red-ginseng intaking, as an antioxidant, may be useful for removing MDA produced during aerobic exercise in the elderly.

Studies on the Determinations of Dissolved Oxygen in Beverages (음료중 산소분석법에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to establish a simple and accurate method for the determination of oxygen that is a processing aid in various beverage. The quantitative determination of dissolved oxygen (DO) contents in 30 cases of samples were performed by traditional titration method and polarography. As a result of the study, the analysis of DO contents in fruit-extract beverages containing oxygen by titration method was time consuming and large sample volumes were needed. Besides, serious interferences with compounds such as hydroxylamine and nitric oxide were observed, leading to false response. Although the polarography is easily affected by $H_2S$, proteins, and various organic compounds, it is a simple and practical method that provides inexpensive and relatively rapid analysis. The polarography is best suited to the routine determination of DO in a large number of samples and it is expected that the polarography can directly be applied to the quality control of the beverages containing added oxygen. The analysis results of DO contents in various fruit-extract beverages with oxygen and without oxygen were as follows: 23.10 ppm to 32.60 ppm for various frutis extract beverages with oxygen, 0.70 pp to 2.54 ppm for mixed beverages without oxygen, 7.63 ppm to 8.28 ppm for drinking water.

초순수 제조공정 현황

  • 경제발전과 더불어 산업의 많은 분야에서 순수 및 초순순의 사용이 증가하고 있으나, 환경오염에 의한 원수의 오염에 따라 순수 및 초순순제조의 장치비와 처리비용의 증가가 야기되고 있다. 현재 국내에는 화력, 원자력발전소를 비롯하여 열병합발전소, 석유화학공장, 제약회사, 전기 전자부품회사, 반도체회사 및 철강회사 등 많은 분야에서 순수 및 초순수 제조장치의 구성과 성능이 많은 차이를 나타내고 있다. 국내의 초순수 제조장치는 90% 이상이 이온교환수지를 사용하는 이온교환법과 UF, R/O System과 같은 Membrane을 사용하는 Membrane System을 병행하여 적용하고 있다. 국내 초순수처리 Plant에서는 통상 전처리 System과 1차 순수제조 System 및 초순수 System이 상호 연결되어 Plant가 구성 운영되고 있다. 전처리 System에는 응집침전, 여과 흡착, 살균 등이 적용되고 있으며 여과 System에 Membrane을 적용할 수 있으나 국내에서는 특별한 경우를 제외하고 대부분 전처리 여과 System에 Media Filter를 사용한다. 전처리 System도 순수처리 장치의 전처리로는 없어서는 안되는 System이지만 여기에는 전처리 System을 제외하고 국내에서 적용하고 있는 초순수처리 System의 공정현황과 각 System별 특징을 설명하고 있다. 초순순 System에는 요구 수질에 따라 다소 차이가 있지만 반도체 공업에서 사용되는 초순수 System이 이중 최고의 Grade로 반도체공업에서 적용되고 있는 System을 기준하였다. 특히 Membrane을 적용한 초순수제조 System이 증가하고 있어 R/O, ED, EDR, CDI, (EDI)와 같은 Membrane System의 특성과 원리를 검토하였다.대적으로 높은 산소확산계수와 물에 대해서는 낮은 투과도를 가져야 한다. 높은 산소확산계수는 반응을 빠르게 하는 잇점이 있으며 물에 대한 낮은 투과도는 센서내의 전해질 물질을 유지보호하는 역할을 한다. 분리막이 산소전극에 이용될 경우 높은 산소 확산계수 이외에도 적절한 기계적 강도, 열적 안정성 등이 요구된다. 몰입이 가능하여 임계치가 저하된 것으로 여겨진다. 또한 광학적 이득의 존재는 이 구조에 의한 극단파장 반도체 레이저다이오드의 실현 가능성을 나타내는 것이다.548 mL에 비해 통계학적으로 의의 있게 적었다(p<0.05). 결론: 관상동맥우회로 조성수술에서 전방온혈심정지액을 사용할 때 희석되지 많은 고농도 포타슘은 fliud overload와 수혈을 피하고 delivery kit를 사용하지 않음으로써 효과적이고 만족할 만한 심근보호 효과를 보였다.를 보였다.4주까지에서는 비교적 폐포는 정상적 구조를 유지하면서 부분적으로 소폐동맥 중막의 비후와 간질에 호산구 침윤의 소견이 특징적으로 관찰되었다. 결론: 분리 폐 관류는 정맥주입 방법에 비해 고농도의 cisplatin 투여로 인한 다른 장기에서의 농도 증가 없이 폐 조직에 약 50배 정도의 고농도 cisplatin을 투여할 수 있었으며, 또한 분리 폐 관류 시 cisplatin에 의한 직접적 폐 독성은 발견되지 않았다이 낮았으나 통계학적 의의는 없었다[10.0%(4/40) : 8.2%(20/244), p>0.05]. 결론: 비디오흉강경술에서 재발을 낮추기 위해 수술시 폐야 전체를 관찰하여 존재하는 폐기포를 놓치지 않는 것이 중요하며, 폐기포를 확인하지 못한 경우와 이차성 자연기흉에 대해서는 흉막유착술에 더 세심한 주의가 필요하다는 것을 확인하였다. 비디오흉강경수술은 통증이 적고, 입원기간이 짧고, 사회

Comparison of the Performance of Machine Learning Models for TOC Prediction Based on Input Variable Composition (입력변수 구성에 따른 총유기탄소(TOC) 예측 머신러닝 모형의 성능 비교)

  • Total organic carbon (TOC) represents the total amount of organic carbon contained in water and is a key water quality parameter used, along with biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), to quantify the amount of organic matter in water. In this study, a model to predict TOC was developed using XGBoost (XGB), a representative ensemble machine learning algorithm. Independent variables for model construction included water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen concentration, BOD, COD, suspended solids, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and discharge. To quantitatively analyze the impact of various water quality parameters used in model construction, the feature importance of input variables was calculated. Based on the results of feature importance analysis, items with low importance were sequentially excluded to observe changes in model performance. When built by sequentially excluding items with low importance, the performance of the model showed a root mean squared error-observation standard deviation ratio (RSR) range of 0.53 to 0.55. The model that applied all input variables showed the best performance with an RSR value of 0.53. To enhance the model's field applicability, models using relatively easily measurable parameters were also built, and the performance changes were analyzed. The results showed that a model constructed using only the relatively easily measurable parameters of water temperature, electrical conductivity, pH, dissolved oxygen concentration, and suspended solids had an RSR of 0.72. This indicates that stable performance can be achieved using relatively easily measurable field water quality parameters.

Lowess and outlier analysis of biological oxygen demand on Nakdong main stream river (낙동강 본류 측정소들의 생물학적 산소요구량 수치에 대한 비모수적 회귀분석과 특이점분석)

  • This paper is based on water information system of NIE, National Institute of Environmental Research. We used monthly data of water quality from January, 2013 to August, 2013 starting from measuring point A (nbA) to measuring point N (nbN) located along the Nakdong river main stream. Statistical water quality analysis of BOD (biological oxygen demand) is specified by R programming depending on month, year, and points. Based on BOD measured from Nakdong river's measuring points, we used exploratory data analysis and locally weighted scatter plot smoother (Lowess) trend analysis, which is a method of non-parametic regression analysis, to analyze long-term water tendency and water quality distribution depending on points. Also, we analyzed the period and the measuring point of which the outliers are abundant. As a result, compared to BOD measured in nbM located in Busan along the downstream, BOD measured in nbG located in Daegu and nbI located in Changwon along the midstream showed higher rate of water pollution at a severe level.

Comparison of Material Flux at the Sediment-Water Interface in Marine Finfish and Abalone Cage Farms, Southern Coast of Korea: In-situ and Laboratory Incubation Examination (남해안 어류 및 전복가두리양식장의 퇴적물-수층 경계면에서의 물질플럭스 비교: 현장배양과 실내배양실험 연구)

  • It is necessary to study the material circulation of coastal ecosystem according to aquacultural activity in order to induce the sustainable production of aquaculture and the fishery environment for the useful use. Hence, it is essential to make an exact assessment for the sedimentation release flux at the sediment-water interface in the aquafarm. Sediment oxygen demand and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were compared using in-situ and laboratory incubational examination. Sediment oxygen demands were 116, 34, and $31\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 52, 17, and $15\;mmol\;O_2\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen release fluxes were 7.18, 7.98, and $1.78\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (in-situ incubation), 3.33, 3.74, and $1.96\;mmol\;m^{-2}\;d^{-1}$ (Core incubation) at Tongyeong finfish, Yeosu finfish, and Wando abalone cage farms, respectively. Consequently, in-situ incubation results showed two times higher than laboratory examination. We compared the material flux at the sediment-water interface of each farm and the characteristics between two different kinds of material flux examination.
