  • Recently environmental issue is more and more emphasized and 'Green Growth' became on of the key words of this Government. Based on this trend, the exhaust gases out of the gas generator cycle and the staged combustion cycle LRE whose propellants are kerosene and LOx were compared. For this purse, 8 tonf class of each cycle engine was designed and the amount and the components of the gases were investigated by using CEA. As expected, the staged combustion cycle engine generates less pollutants than the other cycle. In addition, the graphite that is generated by the gas generator can be reacted with the oxygen in the atmosphere creating additional pollutants.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to investigate the possibilities of an industrial $N_2$ generator that it replace Halon series as a natural extinguishing system. And this study comparison design standard of gas series extinguishing system with natural extinguishing system. We manufactured simple protected enclosure for analyzing fire-extinguishing performance of the $N_2$ generator. As a $N_2$ gas is exhausted on protected enclosure, a various of Oxygen concentration is measured to analyze fireextinguishing performance experimentally. The results, in case of $100m^3$ protected enclosure and $5m^3$/min $N_2$ flow rate, the Oxygen concentration is decreased below 15% within 3 minutes. And so, the $N_2$ generator make full use of an suffocating extinguishing system.

  • Negative ion generation in an inductively coupled oxygen plasma was investigated by using a Langmuir probe. It was observed that the probe current ratio of the positive ion saturation current and the negative current which is consisted of the electron current and the negative ion current, and also the potential difference between the floating potential and plasma potential vary with the RF input power and more sensitively with the operating pressure, respectively. Results show that the operating condition to achieve the maximum probe current ratio and the minimum potential difference shift from the low pressure region to the high pressure regions with increasing the input power. It implies that the generation of the negative oxygen ions increases and the recombination of the positive and negative ions are enhanced in the plasma.

  • 주산기 뇌손상은 주로 급격한 저산소-허혈 손상에 의하는데 급격한 산소 공급의 차단은 oxidative phosphorylation을 정지 시켜서 뇌대사를 위한 에너지 공급이 차단되게 된다. 에너지 공급이 차단된 뇌세포는 뇌세포막에서 세포 내외의 이온 농도 차를 유지시키던 ATP-dependent $Na^{+}-K^{+}$ pump의 기능이 정지 되고, 세포 내외의 농도 차에 따라 $Na^{+}$, $Cl^{+}$, $Ca^{{+}{+}}$의 대규모 세포 내로 이동이 일어난다. 세포 내로 calcium 이온의 이동은 glutamate 수용체의 활성화에 의해서도 일나는데, 세포 내 calcium 이온의 증가는 protease, lipase, nuclease 등을 활성화 시켜 세포를 사망에 이르게 하는 연속적이고 다양한 생화학적 반응을 일으키게 된다. Glutamate는 대표적인 신경 전달 물질인데 저산소-허혈 손상 시 glutamate 수용체의 지나친 흥분은 미성숙 뇌에 뇌손상을 유발하는데, NMDA 또는 non-NMDA 수용체와 복합체를 형성하고 있는 calcium 이동 통로를 활성화 시켜 세포 내 calcium 이온을 증가시키고, 그 외에 metabotropic recetor는 G-protein의 활성화 등을 통해 뇌손상을 유발하는 다양한 생화학적 반응을 매개한다. 저산소-허혈 손상 후 재산소화와 재관류가 일어나면서 뇌세포의 지연성 사망(secondary neuronal death)이 일어나는데 이는 초기 손상 후 뒤이어 일어나는 다양한 생화학적 반응에 의하는데 다량의 산소 자유기 발생, nitric oxide의 생성, 염증 반응과 싸이토카인, 신경전도 물질의 과흥분 등이 관여하며, 신경 세포 사망은 세포괴사(necrosis)뿐 아니라 일부는 세포 사멸(apoptosis)로 알려진 의도된 세포 사망(programmed cell death)에 의한 것으로 생각되고 있다(Fig. 2).

  • The development process of a gas generator for a 30-tonf pump-fed space liquid rocket engine is described. Starting from the development of an injector, followed by subscale and full-scale test specimens, the development of LOx/kerosene fuel-rich gas generator has been concluded successfully. Various analytical methods have been utilized in the course of design and the performance requirements have been verified experimentally through ignition tests, combustion performance and stability assessment tests and duration tests. The gas generator has proven its workability and stability within a defined operation window of varying chamber pressure and mixture ratio and demonstrated compliance to the performance and life time requirements.

  • As the importance of low power design is emphasized, power consumption became one of the standards that represent the performance of the system. The purpose of this study is to decide design variable that minimize power consumption for the oxygen concentrator in two bed-one compressor 8 step PSA process that has above 90% purity at 3lpm by using given constants and selected parameters. Setting selected parameters as cycle time and equalization time, optimization for PSA process in the oxygen concentrator is progressed. For this, we need to know the features and basic principals of PSA process and to deduce objective function of performance analysis. Validations for objective function and lots of experiments are needed too. By using the characteristic curve of the compressor and the pressure curve of the process for 1 cycle, objective function was set. After theoretical 2 dimensional optimized paths was obtained. And then, by experiment, theoretical optimized path was verified.

  • The analysis of specific impulse of the liquid rocket engine employing gas generator cycle with LOx/kerosene as propellant has been performed. The relative error of performance of 300 ton level engine is 0.1%s for specific impulse and 12% for optimal combustion pressure comparing with the published data. The difference of the performance model and the material property models of gas generator product gas are the presumed major reason of discrepancy. The optimal condition of 30 ton level engine is combustion pressure of 68 bar and mixture ratio of 2.2 for maximum specific impulse. This optimal condition can be changed by performance models.

Physicochemical Characteristics of Seawater in Gamak Bay for a Period of Hypoxic Water Mass Disappearance (가막만 빈산소 수괴 소멸기의 물리화학적 특성)

  • Hypoxic(oxygen-deficient) water masses are a key threat to the ecosystem of shallow marine coastal areas worldwide. The phenomena of hypoxia occurred at Gamak Bay, on the southeast coast of Korea, in late June 2007. In this paper, the physicochemical characteristics of seawater were surveyed for a period of hypoxic water mass disappearance. The hypoxic water mass was located between Sunso and the northwestern area of the inner bay. The dissolved oxygen(DO) concentrations of surface and bottom water were $1.3mgL^{-1}$ and less than $2mgL^{-1}$, respectively, in the hypoxic water masses, and $4.5{\sim}6.8mgL^{-1}$ and $3.8{\sim}6.0mgL^{-1}$ at the other oxygen-rich sample sites, respectively. Chlorophyll a concentrations were $4.9{\sim}25.3{\mu}gL^{-1}$ at the surface, $2.3{\sim}23.1{\mu}gL^{-1}$ in the middle, and $1.9{\sim}9.0{\mu}gL^{-1}$ at the bottom of the hypoxic water masses. When the hypoxic water mass appeared in Gamak Bay, it formed three different vertical types. The first type occurred throughout the water depth around Sunso. The second type developed from the bottom. The third type of hypoxic water mass was formed in the middle water layer when the inversion of water temperature occurred. The third type of phenomena appeared at only St. 9, St. 14 and St. 21 sites near the Hodo coast. Aquatic surface respiration of bottom-dwelling fishes such as the oriental goby(Acanthogobius flavimanus) was observed and many crustaceans were seen along the adjacent shore of the hypoxic water mass area. About 3,000 oriental gobies as well as many crustaceans died due to this event in Gamak Bay. The results of this study could provide fundamental data for the mechanism of hypoxic water masses in Gamak Bay.

Numerical Analysis on Cooling Characteristics of Oxidizer-Rich Preburner (산화제 과잉 예연소기 냉각 성능 수치 해석)

  • The numerical analysis for the verification of preburner's cooling characteristics applying to kerosene-LOx rocket engine has been fulfilled. The distribution of combustion gas properties in primary combustion zone was calculated by the mixture ratio based on head injector arrangement, the properties of oxygen flowing in wall channels as coolant were applied under real-gas conditions, and multi-phase mixing model was employed to calculate the mixing process of primary combustion zone with liquid oxygen which was used for wall cooling. The results of numerical analysis were compared with the experimental results, hence thermo-physical properties in cooling channels and a combustor could be quantitatively identified.
