  • Pilot scale study was carried out to produce Volatile Fatty Acids with primary sludge from municipal wastewater treatment plant. An acid fermenter was operated at pH 9, $35^{\circ}C$, SRT of 3.5-4.25d, using a final effluent as elutriating water(Mode-I) and pH 9, SRT 5d, temperature of $35^{\circ}C$(Mode-II), $55^{\circ}C$(Mode-III), using a primarily treated water as elutriating water. Although solubilization rate was enhanced with the increase of temperature, the VFAs production rate was decreased. The VS reduction was shown approximately 56%, and the sludge volume reduction was 93%. The optimal conditions for solubilization was obtained at pH 9, $35^{\circ}C$ and SRT of 5d.

  • We studied on screening and isolation of dominant bacteria in the food waste fermentation process and on effective production of VFAs by isolated bacteria. In the result of study, bacteria of twelve species were isolated by anaerobic medium. Among the 12 isolated species including Escherichia coli, Clostridium formicoaceticum, C. butyricum, C. acetobutyricum. E. coli and Clostridium spp. were occurred dominantly in the fermentation process and regarded as best VFAs producing bacteria. Acetic acid are produced 287 mg/gTS(8,176 mg/L) by E. coli in concentration of $6{\times}10^8\;cells/gTS$, 551 mg/gTS(15,715 mg/L) by Clostridium formicoaceticum in concentration of $5{\times}10^4\;cells/gTS$. Three times as much acetic acid were produced as blank. Butyric acid are produced 214 mg/gTS(6,106 mg/L) by C. butyricum in concentration of $2.5{\times}10^5\;cells/gTS$ and produced 254 mg/gTS(7,261 mg/L) by C. acetobutyricum of concentration of $1.5{\times}10^5\;cells/gTS$. Two times as much butyric acid were produced as blank.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effective pretreatment of foodwaste for the anaerobic digestion. Considering the foodwaste generation and the anaerobic digester for municipal wastewater sludges, the some pretreatment processes were performed such as the grinding of foodwastes with the addition of water, the mixing with sludges, and the hydrolysis with the addition of NaOH. The results were as followings ; 1. As the stage of feasibility test in laboratory scale, the foodwaste grinding using a household garbage disposer was performed with three different water mixing ratios of 1:1, 1:5 and 1:9 as weight base. The physicochemical characteristics of grinded foodwaste were analyzed and the effective conditions was recommended as the 1 :5mixing ratio of foodwaste and water and the below 8mm particle size. 2. And the mixing of foodwaste and municipal wastewater sludge was studied with three different mixing ratios of 1:9, 3:7 and 5:5 as weight base. The physicochemical characteristics of the mixed foodwaste and sludges were analyzed and the effective mixing ratio was recommended as 3:7 of foodwaste and sludge.

  • The anaerobic digestion of food waste effluent through single- and two-phase process was estimated and compared in this study. The treatment efficiencies for total solid(TS), volatile solid(VS), tCOD(total COD) and sCOD(soluble COD) were invariably higher in the single-phase process, which was accounted for by the fact that the treatment efficiency of organic wastes usually showed an inverse relationship with organic loading rate in the anaerobic digestion. In fact, the organic loading rate was lower for single-phase process. The concentration of tCOD were significantly lower in two-phase process but much more biogas was produced, compared to single-phase anaerobic digestion process, which might be explained partly by the relatively higher stability of two-phase process resulting from the separation of acid phase from methane phase.

  • Temperature dependence of kinetic constants in the anaerobic acidogenesis was investigated using anaerobic chemostat-type reactor. Glucose was used as a substrate in this experiment. Temperature ranging from 15 to $30^{\circ}C$ were studied. The saturation constant$(k_s\upsilon)$ and growth yield(Y) decreased with increasing temperature, while the maximum specific substrate utilization rate$(\upsilon_{max})$ increased. A temperature correction factor$(Q_{10})$ values of the substrate utilization rate and bacteria growth rate were the range from 1.3 to 2.2 and 1.5 to 2.2, respectively. The growth yield(Y) for the acidogenesis process was less sensitive to temperature changes than the maximum specific substrate utilization rate$(\upsilon_{max})$. The simulation model of the relationship between the substrate and sludge retention time(SRT) at the temperature range of 20 to $30^{\circ}C$ is obtained as the following ; $1/SRT={(6.53){\cdot}(1.038)^{T-20}{\cdot}(S/X)}/{(1.38){\cdot}(0.983)^{T-20}+(S/X)}$.

  • Anaerobic ammonium oxidation(ANAMMOX) is a novel process fur treatment of piggery waste with strong nitrogen. In this study, we investigated acid fermentation of organic matter, denitrificatiot reduction of sulfur compounds and P crystalization by hydroxyapatite during the treatment of wastewater with high strength of ammonium and organic matters by ANAMMOX process. Also, functions of hydroxylamine and hydrazine as intermedeates of ANAMMOX process were tested. This study reveals that various complex-reactions with anaerobic ammonium oxidation of piggery waste are happened and hydroxylamine and hydrazine play an important role in ANAMMOX reaction.

  • In this study, Anaerobic sewage sludge in a batch reactor operation at $35^\circ{C}$ was used as the seed to investigate the effect of pretreatments of waste activated sludge and to evaluate its hydrogen production potential by anaerobic fermentation. Various pretreatments including physical, chemical and biological means were conducted to utilize for substrate. As a result, SCODcr of alkali and mechanical treatment was 15 and 12 times enhanced, compared with a supernatant of activated sludge. And SCODcr was 2 time increase after re-treatment with biological hydrolysis. Those were shown that sequential hybridized treatment of sludge by chemical & biological methods to conform hydrogen production potential in bath experiments. When buffer solution was added to the activated sludge, hydrogen production potential increased as compare with no addition. Combination of alkali and mechanical treatment was higher in hydrogen production potential than other treatments.

  • The study is the result of an practical operation analysis for the full scale fishery product wastewater treatment plant with immersed MBR (iMBR) process. Since fishery product industries show a wide range of wastewater generation by the season, design and operation of the equalization basin are very important factor. The aeration system for the equalization basin mixing can save the chemical consumption for followed system through the restriction of acid fermentation. The concentrations of wastewater primary DAF process treated were BOD 2,291 mg/L, $COD_{Mn}$ 530 mg/L, SS 256.8 mg/L, T-N 38 mg/L, T-P 13.5 mg/L respectively. It was considered that iMBR is the most efficient biological process for high salinity content wastewater since It is irrelevant to the capability of the sludge precipitation. SADp and SADm were 0.31, $26.5m^3/hr{\cdot}m^3$ respectively. In iMBR process, the critical F/M ratio was derived at 0.08~0.10 gBOD/gMLSS by analysing the correlations between MLSS, normalized TMP and temperature. The effluent concentrations were BOD 1.8 mg/L, $COD_{Mn}$ 12.4 mg/L, SS 1.0 mg/L, T-N 7.85 mg/L, T-P 0.1 mg/L and removal efficiencies were 99.9%, 97.6%, 96.3%, 95.7%, 97.8% respectively.
